T he D on D e L illo S ociety About Bibliography Events FAQ Home Links Membership News Site Map Less than 30 years after the publication of his first novel, Americana (1971), Don DeLillo (b. 1936) has been recognized as among the most important writers of his generation. In 1999, he became the first American recipient of the Jerusalem Prize , awarded to writers "whose work expresses the theme of the freedom of the individual in society" and previously awarded to Milan Kundera, Mario Vargas Llosa, V. S. Naipaul, Graham Greene, Simone de Beauvoir and Jorge Luis Borges. The winner of the National Book Award for White Noise (1985) and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Mao II (1991) among other awards and already the subject of several books, DeLillo has achieved international prominence for novels, plays, and short stories that powerfully engage the political, historical, and philosophical issues of our time. Over the past two decades, DeLillo scholarship has grown to include topics as diverse as postmodernity, historiography, systems theory, technology, film, and literary Naturalism, to name but a few. As the body of critical literature and topics for discussion continue to expand, the Don DeLillo Society seeks to facilitate the exchange of ideas between scholars, critics, teachers, and general readers. To learn more about our organization's goals, activities, and even Don DeLillo himself, just follow the links below.

Corrections Don DeLillo America's premier novelist of ideas has long anticipated a world in which spectacle and terror would achieve totemic significance in our everyday lives. By Jeffrey MacIntyre It's been said often enough that every age gets the art it deserves. In a memorable editorial lynching of Oliver Stone, Maureen Dowd once castigated the filmmaker's liberties with history, suggesting his popularity must signal something askew in the culture itself. Stone is not so much a savvy critic of our times, Dowd accusingly implied, as a symptom of its myopic shortcomings. Never pick a fight with Maureen Dowd. Don DeLillo, a novelist who has made American life his explicit subject for over 30 years, has faced similar charges. Like Stone, DeLillo's fascination with conspiratorial themes has drawn no shortage of heated rebukes. His reputation as an unabashedly private and cerebral literary figure, similarly, has not always endeared him to the literary establishment. He figured prominently in an anti-intellectual broadside of so-called serious contemporary fiction this summer in the Atlantic Monthly. Even tributes have tended to diminish DeLillo, as when Martin Amis trivialized him as "the poet of paranoia." Yet his dozen novels and handful of plays, stories and essays range widely and assuredly across the broad swath of the postwar American experience. They bristle with brainy asides and lyric rhapsodies rare to modern literature. From JFK to rock 'n' roll, from suburbia to the CIA, DeLillo has crafted defining portrayals of many touchstones in the American psyche.

America was and is the immigrant's dream, and as the son of two immigrants I was attracted by the sense of possibility that had drawn my grandparents and parents. Don DeLillo, from the 1993 interview with Adam Begley The writer is the person who stands outside society, independent of affiliation and independent of influence. The writer is the man or woman who automatically takes a stance against his or her government. There are so many temptations for American writers to become part of the system and part of the structure that now, more than ever, we have to resist. American writers ought to stand and live in the margins, and be more dangerous. Writers in repressive societies are considered dangerous. That's why so many of them are in jail. Don DeLillo, from the 1988 interview with Ann Arensberg
Don DeLillo has published thirteen novels since 1971, along with several plays and numerous stories. I believe he is one of the most distinctive and interesting American writers of our day (not to mention that he can be very funny). His sentences are utterly his own.

    Reading a Postmodern Text

Reading postmodern literature can be incredibly difficult. Learn a few of the stylistic and structural patterns used by postmodern authors and the going gets a lot easier. LIBRA Libra , by Don Delillo Book review by Rob Couteau Published in: Arete: Forum For Thought, Jan. 1989.
(San Diego, CA: Alden Mills.) Photo of Don Delillo
by Thomas Victor Don Delillo's latest novel, Libra is named for the astrological sign characterized by the striving for balance and harmony. The author of End Zone and White Noise has created in Libra what he calls "a work of the imagination" based on the life of Lee Harvey Oswald and events surrounding President Kennedy's assassination. Libra was Oswald's sun-sign, and through the author's masterful treatment, it also serves to symbolize the assassin's precarious search for balance in American society a search that ended with his tilting the scales toward the direction of excess and destruction. In a sense, there is nothing new in Delillo's plot. Elements of many conspiracy theories come together, including the Mafia, anti-Castro forces, and a renegade CIA faction, all with a vested interest in killing the president. What is ingenious is the day-to-day interweaving of character, scene and setting the usual challenge of the novel, but combined with an added problem: believably reconstructing scenes involving a wellknown figure. Through Delillo's intricate description of scenes from various stages from Oswald's life (e.g., the twelve-year-old Oswald talking with his mother, the older Oswald interacting with his fellow Marines on a naval base in Japan), we come to believe in this strange character who tragically searches for the meaning of his life.

"I DON'T Want to Talk About It" read the engraved card that Don DeLillo handed me in Athens in 1979, after I'd crossed seven time zones to interview him. "It" was his youth, growing up with Italian immigrant parents in the Bronx. Even about his books DeLillo was secretive. "When you try to unravel something you've written, you belittle it in a way," he said in the interview. "It was created as a mystery, in part." Though still suspicious of talk, DeLillo has stood up to accept awards for his past three novels: the American Book Award for White Noise (1985), the Irish Times -Aer Lingus Prize for Libra (1988), and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Mao II (1991). Now sixty, DeLillo may again have to appear before a crowd, to say a few words about Underworld for this huge novel, which reveals the secrets of Nick Shay, a middle-aged Italian-American from the Bronx, is an underhistory of the cultural repressions of mid-century America. Don DeLillo, celebrated as a "master ventriloquist" of American culture, represents myriad perspectives at work in American discourse. Hearing the voices that people our landscape, DeLillo incorporates professional jargon and media jive, the slosh of orange juice, the "jones" of Jones Street, and the jive talk of capitalist overkill. Talking trash becomes a literal possibility in DeLillo's work as well, when, for example, we find Jack Gladney poking through compacted debris, and feeling "like a household spy" because the family's garbage may be indicative of "habits, fetishes, addictions, inclinations" ( White Noise ). Later, in Underworld , J. Edgar Hoover's own "habits, fetishes, and inclinations" become the stuff of concern when garbage guerillas target his household refuse. Of course, with DeLillo, we're not just talking literal trash, but the propaganda and PR that attempt to justify government malfeasance and corporate irresponsibility. To borrow an idea from Bahktin's essay "Dostovesky's Polyphonic Novel," DeLillo's particular gift is related to his talent "for hearing and understanding all voices immediately and simultaneously" and his ability to take the discourse and to reveal its "various facets, nuances, possibilities." That is, DeLillo subjects trash talk to contextualization and juxtaposes the ideas or perspectives embraced by various characters as they "ente[r] into various relationships with other life-positions." For example, the theme of photography ricochets and reverberates in
