L. Sprague de Camp Passes On
posted: 08:09 am ET
07 November 2000 L. Sprague de Camp, one of the greatest archaeological voices of the Golden Age of Science Fiction, died Monday in his adopted home of Plano, Texas, just three weeks short of his 93rd birthday. The deceased was one of the few writers elevated by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America to the rank of "Grand Master," an honor he received in 1978. De Camp's work in the science fiction genre is distinguished by a concern for linguistics and historical forces rare for the time, when most SF writers dealt exclusively in "hard" sciences and engineering. His most highly regarded works of this type are his pioneering time-travel stories, including the epic Lest Darkness Fall , and the long-running adventure cycle set on the planet Krishna. Trained as an aeronautical engineer, de Camp was one of the SF writers assigned duty at the Philadelphia Naval Yard during World War II, a now-legendary group that included Robert A. Heinlein and Isaac Asimov. He rose to the rank of lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve. Regardless of his success in the hard SF arena, de Camp was best-known and best at home in the fields of antiquity and light fantasy, in both of which he excelled. His distinguished works in the latter field, in particular, include the "Incompleat Enchanter" and "Gavagan's Bar" series, both co-written with longtime friend Fletcher Pratt.

Introduction
L. Sprague de Camp is a household name- in SF&F households, that is. A prolific writer who wrote approximately 20 books in the now-famous "Conan" series, he is also the author of one of the most famous Alternate History novels, Lest Darkness Fall , not to mention his tendency toward humor, as in The Complete Compleat Enchanter series. While most of his novels have fantasy or historical settings, some of them can be described as Science Fantasy, some as Historical Fiction, and yet others cannot be described at all. Of course, this variety can mask some underlying trends in his work. For example, he writes mostly male viewpoints, and some of them are rather chauvenistic. Also, he really loves the "reluctant hero" formula, and he relies heavily on the introduction of messy reality to boost the humor levels and character sympathies of his books. His novels are, however, well researched and with strong plots and characters, so he can't be blamed for the fact that many of the ideas in them have become cliched, though his own popularity encouraged imitators. As with many prolific authors, however, not all of his books are equally good.
Krishna Novels
Krishna is a planet that still uses old-fashioned methods- like killing people with crossbows. Basically, it's a great place to dump various characters from spacefaring societies to see how they deal with the results. These are mostly humerous novels, with cliched cultures and classic plots. The sentient denizens of Krishna look mostly like human beings, except that they lay eggs and have antennas. Since many of the characters could more accurately be called charicatures, these novels may be the inspiration for Terry Pratchett's Discworld style.

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

Review: L. Sprague De Camp's Rogue Queen
L. (Lyon) Sprague De Camp, 1907- . Rogue Queen This was pretty interesting sf, but annoying as hell. Even for the early 50s. Some of the reviews on the cover of the edition I read (Bluejay Books, April 1985; ISBN 0-312-94396-2) said "An amusing parallel between theoretical communism and the beehive is shown in this fantasy of an otherworld race of oviparous humans organized in a bee-like social structure. Mr. de Camp instills a lot of subtlety in his story of their conversion to the social mores of Earthmen as the outcome of the visit of a spaceship from Earth." Hartford Courant . Subtle? I beg to differ.

by L. Sprague de Camp and Catherine Crook de Camp
Published by Advent:Publishers 5.5"x8.5", 349 pp., 1981 ISBN 0-911682-25-2 Cloth, $18.00 This collection of the de Camps’ work, singly and in collaboration with each other, was assembled in honor of their appearance as joint Guests of Honor at X-Con, June 1981 in Milwaukee. It is a selection of short stories, verse, non-fiction, and excerpts drawn from almost every facet of the de Camps’ diverse writings—fantasy, science fiction, children’s stories; poems fabulous, romantic, and pragmatic; notes on prehistory, the evolution of weaponry, and the development of imaginative fiction, the origins of engineering; of Atlantis, Conan, and magic. This literary feast includes several new pieces, such as Catherine’s “Should Your Child Read Science Fiction?” Others range from “The Coming of the Engineers” (LSdeC) to “Windfall” (CCdeC) to “Eudoric’s Unicorn” (LSdeC). Also included are extended introductory remarks about Sprague and Catherine de Camp by Robert A. Heinlein, Lin Carter, Isaac Asimov, Poul Anderson, Andrew Offutt, Patricia Jackson, and George Scithers. The de Camps have passed on since this book was published, and Advent is proud to have it in print as a memorial to them both. With a color photograph of the de Camps as frontispiece, and black-and-white illustrations by C. H. Burnett.

A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper
LEST DARKNESS FALL is a classic, and justifiably so. The cover describes it as "the novel that defined a genre," and while there were earlier alternate histories, this was the first to make a major impression on the science fiction field. (Harry Turtledove in his introduction talks about how it changed his life, giving a great example of how alternate histories work: what if he hadn't read it?) It is a book that should be in print and I'm glad to see Baen has brought it back. It is interesting that it has been reissued just as de Camp was given a "Special Achievement" Sidewise Award for Alternate History, and it was cited along with his works THE WHEELS OF IF and "A Gun for Aristotle" as major seminal works in the genre. For those who don't know, the plot is very much a "Connecticut Yankee" sort of plot: Martin Padway, walking along in 1939 Rome, is struck by lightning and wakes up in sixth century Rome. He determines to use his superior knowledge to prevent the fall of Rome, or rather the Dark Ages following it. While Twain intended A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT to be a rather bitter description of how bad lifeand peoplewere in the so-called "golden days" of Camelot, de Camp is more an engineer and hence concentrates more on just what a twentieth century man could do with his knowledge.
