L. Sprague de Camp The first works I read by L. Sprague de Camp were not his science fiction or fantasy novels, but his historical novels ( An Elephant for Aristotle stands out in my memory) and his non-fiction books, including Day of the Dinosaur (with his wife Catherine) and The Ancient Engineers. A suggestion by a librarian put me onto his excellent time travel/alternate history novel, Lest Darkness Fall, and through that I discovered the V.I./Krishna books in the science fiction section and the Harold Shea novels among the fantasy titles. For some reason, his Conan novels were not shelved with the rest of the SF/fantasy titles, and I did not discover them until after I entered college. L. Sprague de Camp was one of the finest authors of SF's Golden age, and produced a vast range of excellent fantasy, historical, and non-fiction works as well.

This fan site is owned by Vincent N. Darlage L. Sprague De Camp Conan the Barbarian , the hero created by Robert E. Howard , has no equal in the realms of the Sword and Sorcery genre. In the Fifties, L. Sprague de Camp edited Howard's stories for the Gnome Press editions of his Conan stories. He also took existing Howard tales and converted them into Conan stories, finished unfinished manuscripts, and wrote some pastiches of his own. Let me state my own biases before continuing. I enjoy the pastiches de Camp wrote. They weren't as good as Howard, and should not be published in the same volumes as Howard stories, but I liked them. I even liked the posthumous "collaborations". What I do not like is the "editing" de Camp did, which, to my mind, seemed more like butchering. He didn't just edit Howard's Conan stories, he rewrote some stories to fit his conception of Conan's timeline. Editing is fixing commas or maybe sentence structure, not changing the ending of a story. A huge example of this can be found in The Black Stranger . It didn't fit into the de Camp "timeline" for Conan's career, so de Camp rewrote it as "The Treasure of Tranicos," allowing Conan to get saved by Aquilonian nobles so he can have a reason to go to Aquilonia and kill the king and take the crown. De Camp further mauled the story by introducing Thoth-Amon into it for some reason.

Wellington Wells Bien que né au début du 20 eme siècle, Lyon Sprague de Camp a vécu avec son temps et a développé son propre site internet (dont vous trouverez les références en bas de page). L'existence de ce site va permettre à cette page une riche iconographie, ce qui n'est pas toujours le cas, et pallier la relative vacuité du texte, compte tenu du fait que je ne dispose pas de son autobiographie " Time and Chance" et que les informations disponibles sur le web sont peu importantes et généralement redondantes. Dans les années trente, Sprague commence à écrire de la science-fiction et publie sa première nouvelle "the isolinguals" dans la livraison de septembre 1937 d'Astounding dirigé à l'époque par F. Orlin Tremaine, le numéro de septembre étant d'ailleurs le dernier où il apparait comme rédacteur en chef. En effet à partir d'octobre 1937, John Campbell est aux commandes et initie ce qui deviendra "l'age d'or".
