Fielding Dawson
Writer at the heart of America's postwar avant-garde
Michael Hrebeniak
Friday April 5, 2002
The Guardian

The writer and visual artist Fielding Dawson, who has died aged 69, worked in two of the centres of the postwar American avant-garde - Black Mountain College, North Carolina, and New York - during a period of unparalleled confidence and fertility. At the age of eight, he moved from New York to Kirkwood, near St Louis, where his father worked as a journalist. His mother bought him a typewriter at 15, remarking, "We could use a new Saroyan." After taking portraiture classes with Tanasko Milovich at the St Louis school of fine art, he enrolled at Black Mountain College in 1949, alongside Robert Rauschenberg and Kenneth Noland, to study painting under Franz Kline and writing under Charles Olson.

Introduction When the Special Collections Department opened its doors in 1969, there was already established the solid beginnings of a manuscript collection. Several members of the English Department had encouraged the purchase of a number of collections, which eventually led toward the establishment of the department. Roger H. Guedalla and George Quasha were among the people who had been instrumental in purchasing a Modern Literature collection, which contained books and manuscripts focusing on the extraordinary group of authors and poets who had been involved with Black Mountain College in North Carolina. Many of these manuscripts are now housed with the Historic and Literary Manuscript Collection (MC 100), and include original materials by Robert Creeley, Charles Olson, and Fielding Dawson. Scope and Content The collection is arranged alphabetically by author and is comprised of 3.6 cubic feet of manuscripts and documents, including single items and small groups of materials of local, national, and world interest (ca. 1819-1989). The folder contents include letters, correspondence, articles, stories, plays, and legal materials.

Impressions of Fielding
P L O P L O P Fielding Dawson's visit to Indy was an exciting, invigorating event! He kicked butt at Butler University, spoke his truth at the Marion County Public Library where he read with his good friend John Rich and spread light at the Women's Prison. He liked Indy so much he's promised to come back later this year. We'll keep you informed. Meanwhile, here are some people's impression of Fielding Dawson's visit.

YEAH! John Rich 2/22/99 Fielding Dawson's visit to Indianapolis had a far greater value than the oppportunity to meet and read with a great writer because his visit allowed us to meet each other in person. We had written each other for the last four or five years, yet we had never met. Fielding's friendship transcends even the art itself if art can be transcended. True, art brought us together our passion for language however, his friendship gave me insights into myself. Because of all his experience teaching in prisions, he has insights and an understanding of prisoner's problems, struggles, and strengths not only the problems prisoners have during their bit, but also the problems we face on the streets. Re-adjustment is tough Fielding understands this. I knew I left an alien, very aggressive and angry environment where anxious stagnation appears normal, but I did not realize how the prison environment clings to the ex-con's psyche and keeps him or her in a childlike state until Fielding pointed it out to me. Yet the childlike quality exists right in front of me in my art which tends to be cartoonish and my actions with my childlike enthusiasm for even the simpliest of joys. Now I can build upon the insights, Fielding, the teacher, gave me so that maybe, maybe, I'll grow up to be a fraction of the artist Fielding is.

A prominent book editor stopped me on the street to comment, bitterly, that no one in the big press had seen fit to remark on the passing of Fielding Dawson, a local NYC resident and one of the last survivors of the literary era that is associated with Black Mountain, the Beats, and their contemporaries in other forms of art, Pop, Shaped Canvas, as well as early Rock.
I knew Fielding as one of the stalwarts of Max's Kansas City, the legendary artists' hangout from 1965 to 1974, as a short story writer and baseball fan. He was the pitcher for Max's softball team, and he had a pitch for me too, to support The Shortstop, a literary journal he was trying to resuscitate.
Fielding knew small press publishing; he had written and drawn illustrations for such literary journals of the era as Jonathan Williams's Jargon, Sparrow, Kulchur, Caterpillar, El Corno Emplumado, Joglars, Rockbottom, Mulch and The Zealot. The names bring back the flavor of the era. We talked a lot, in the company of the Old Curmudgeon, a prominent lawyer friend. OC fondly remembers traveling with Fielding to the Cedar Bar on University, and to Lion's Head on Christopher Street, two prominent watering places for artists and writers.
In 1930, after the birth of a son in New York, the Dawson family moved to the mother's home town, Kirkwood, Mo, near St. Louis, where dad found a job in journalism, and young Fielding acquired a taste for drawing and writing. In 1949 he joined the legendary Black Mountain College in Lake Eden, NC, to study painting under Franz Kline and writing under Charles Olson.

Richard Dawson took four wickets on debut Assistant coach Graham Dilley says England cannot afford the fielding errors that allowed India to reach a first innings 469 all out on the third day in Mohali. Click here for scorecard "We bowled with discipline and control to create some chances that weren't taken," Dilley said. "If you do that here, you should be prepared to be in the field awfully long." Slip-ups by Mark Butcher and wicket-keeper James Foster gave let-offs to Rahul Dravid and centurion Deep Dasgupta on Tuesday. And Foster was in trouble again on Wednesday, spilling a stumping chance after Indian captain Sourav Ganguly had gone down the track to spinner Richard Dawson.
We bowled with discipline and control, aggression when needed, but overall patience
