Erasmus Darwin: A Life of Unequalled Achievement
by Desmond King-Hele

A double tribute is due in this review. Homage must first be paid to Desmond King-Hele, FRS. For the past forty years, this distinguished physicist has devoted his spare time to rediscovering and rehabilitating one of the greatest intellectual all-rounders this country has ever produced.
For too long Erasmus Darwin's reputation has languished. He was scientifically eclipsed by his more illustrious grandson, and his erstwhile fame as a poet came to seem quite baffling. Despite his contributions to many fields (technology, medicine, botany, pedagogics, to name just a few) and the fact that he published a theory of evolution nearly sixty years before Charles, Erasmus barely gets a mention in most histories of science or Enlightenment thought.
What most engages King-Hele's enthusiasm is Darwin's technological innovations and his go-ahead attitudes towards the industrial society just then being created by some of his closest friends: Matthew Boulton, the ironmaster, and his partner James Watt, perfecter of the steam-engine; Josiah Wedgwood, the potter; James Keir, the chemical manufacturer; men with whom he regularly chinwagged at meetings of Birmingham's Lunar Society. Darwin was always keen to involve himself in their enterprises canal-building and ironworks, for instance. Innovations flowed freely from his fertile mind: schemes for canal locks, superior carriage axles, steam-drawn vehicles, better balloons, horizontal windmills, speaking-machines, and mechanical copying machines (pantographs), to say nothing of more futuristic visions, like turbines and rocket-propulsion.

BACK Erasmus Darwin Erasmus Darwin was a physician who graduated from Edinburgh University Medical School in 1756. He became famous as a physician but he was not the first doctor to describe placental transfusion; however, most of his achievements were as a scientist and inventor. He was an accomplished botanist and had many friends among the pioneering scientists of his day, one of whom was Joseph Priestly who discovered oxygen, and performed experiments that proved water to be H 0. It was Erasmus Darwin who introduced the terms "Oxygen" and "Hydrogen" into the English language. He invented a handwriting copier, and devised a speaking machine using a phonetic system with another scientist friend of his, revolutionist Benjamin Franklin. He published a theory of evolution and created a furore similar to that which greeted (fifty years later) his grandson’s (Charles Darwin’s) publication of "The Origin of the Species," a book which revolutionized the science of biology. Erasmus Darwin died 200 years ago this April. A Bicentennial Commemorative Convention is being held at the Erasmus Darwin Centre (his home) in Lichfield, England, April 19-22, 2002. email

Erasmus Darwin 1731-1802 Erasmus Darwin was a successful physician noted for his radical views on almost everything but especially on biology where his speculations about the nature of evolution were similar to those of J.B Lamarck, believing that species modified themselves by adapting to their environment in a purposeful way. Darwin was born in 1737 at Elston Hall in Nottinghamshire. Educated at Cambridge and Edinburgh, he opened a successful medical practise at Litchfield and turned down an offer from George III to become his personal physician in London, preferring to move to Derby which he used as a base for his extensive travels. While in Litchfield, he made the acquaintance of many distinquished men, among them Joseph Priestley, Jean Jacques Rousseau and Samuel Johnson.
Erasmus Darwin Darwin was a co-founder of the Lunar Society, an informal intellectual group, along with John Whitehurst, the Derby clock maker and scientist, Joshuia Wedgewood, James Watts and others. Later he formed the Derby Philisophical Society which became a rather more formal off shoot of the Lunar group and closer to home. He had a fertile imagination and a profound grasping of fundamental principles concerning almost all scientific disciplines.

Erasmus Darwin

Erasmus Darwin was a leading intellectual in the 18th century, contributing to a diverse array of subjects that held his interest. A physician, inventor, scientist, and philosopher to name only a few of his titles. The grandfather of Charles Darwin, Erasmus was also one of the most successful poets of his time. "He published several volumes of botanical verse that received great acclaim and proved stylistically influential to the likes of Wordsworth, Keats, Byron and Coleridge. Between 1794 and 1796 he published his book, Zoonomia. This employed rhyming couplets to discuss scientific topics, including a theory of how all life originated from one vital spark and from then became all the variety of animals on the planet." (

Boyhood and Edinburgh: Erasmus Darwin, Lamarck, and Culver Darwin's famous intervention in the long scientific debate over the way differing species and life-forms came into being was not a sudden idea. Before its first publication in 1859, he had spent nearly thirty years in scientific exploration, research and analysis, across a range of what are now separate disciplines, collecting the evidence that he summarized and synthesized in his Origin of Species . The result was, in the words of the leading Darwin bibliographer, "certainly the most important biological book ever written." The exhibit traces this story from his days as an undergraduate to the debates that followed his book's publication. The Wedgwood family of Etruria Hall, 1780 The wealthy couple shown here, Josiah and Sarah Wedgwood, at their country house in Staffordshire, were Darwin's grandparents. Both Darwin and his father married Wedgwood cousins, and his career as an independent scientific researcher was made possible not only by his father's success as a physician, but also by wealth inherited from the pottery business.
