English physician who, in 1794-1796, published Zoonomia, in which he anticipated some of Lamarck's evolutionary theories. He also published two treatises on the evolution of higher animals from lower organisms. Curiously enough, Erasmus Darwin was the grandfather of Charles Darwin , who would to shake the world with his own evolutionary theories in the nineteenth century. Darwin, Charles (1809-1882)

English naturalist who was the grandson of Erasmus Darwin and father of physicist George Darwin . Darwin did poorly in school, and so could not secure employment following his graduation from divinity school. However, he was able to secure a position as ship's naturalist aboard the H. M.S. Beagle. The Beagle A Naturalist's Voyage on the Beagle (1839). Darwin, reflecting on his observation, developed a theory of evolution. According to this theory, individual variability means that some organisms have a slight advantage over others. The advantage will allow the organisms to compete better in the "struggle for existence" and produced more offspring, which will inherit the advantageous qualities. The process whereby favorable traits in the most "fit" animals allow it to survive and reproduce, Darwin called "natural selection." He included the idea of "sexual selection" in his theory, stating that the struggle for possession of females will lead the most vigorous males producing the most progeny. Darwin was probably influenced in his formulation of evolution by the Uniformitarian views expressed in Lyell's Principles of Geology

    Erasmus Darwin
    Profile
Physician, poet and botanist. Born at Elston Hall, near Newark, Nottinghamshire. His father had been a lawyer, but retired on inheriting the Hall, although money was very tight. Erasmus was educated at Chesterfield, then St. John's College, Cambridge and the Medical School at Edinburgh University. Finding opportunities somewhat limited in Nottingham he set up a medical practice in Lichfield , Staffordshire from 1756. The following year he married Mary (Polly) Howard and they lived in a large house in Beacon Street, at the edge of the Cathedral Close. This is now called Darwin House and is a visitor centre in his honour. He became very successful and was apparently offered a Royal appointment by George III but he decided to stay in Lichfield. The couple raised three sons to maturity, the youngest, Robert becoming the father of Charles Darwin . Mary died in 1770 and Erasmus continued to live in the same house with his sister Susanna, as housekeeper, and Mary Parker, with whom he had two daughters. In 1781 Erasmus married a widow called Elizabeth Pole, and the couple moved to Radburn Hall, near Derby. Erasmus resumed his medical practice and in 1783 founded the Philosophical Society of Derby. It was in this later stage of his life that he found the time and inclination to complete and write his major works. By his second wife he had a further seven children, one of whom was the mother of Sir Francis Galton (1822-1911), scientist and explorer.

Letter : to Dr. William Withering, 14 May 1775
Manuscript Number: MS 0014 1 folded leaf Agency History/Biographical note:

Erasmus Darwin, an English physician, poet and philosopher, had a botanical garden at Lichfield. He founded three scientific societies in the English Midlands. He wrote several philosophical works about nature, of which the best known is his poem "The Botanic Garden." He was one of the few people in the late 18th century to write about evolution; his grandson Charles Darwin's contributions to the field are better known. William Withering was a physician at the Stafford Infirmary. He was interested in chemistry and botany as well as medicine. In 1776 he published a two-volume work on native British vegetation. Darwin invited him to join the Lunar Society, the most influential of the three societies Darwin founded. Scope and Content:
A short letter sent from Darwin to William Withering, a physician and member of Darwin's Lunar Society, in which Darwin first notes his recent purchase of a large number of German books. He then refers to some books of alchemy he hopes to acquire, to an experiment by Dr. William Small, and to the passage through Parliament of a bill granting James Watt an extension on his steam engine patent.
