By Keith Phipps Though a supremely gifted writer, Quentin Crisp has achieved a good deal of his fame simply by being Quentin Crisp. Born in England in 1908, Crisp's flamboyant appearance and mannerisms revealed his homosexuality at a time when being gay was a dangerous thing. His first memoir, The Naked Civil Servant (1968), has been turned into a play and a movie (starring John Hurt), and was recently reissued as part of Penguin's Twentieth-Century Classics series. In the '70s, Crisp took up residence in New York, his experiences inspiring Sting's 1987 song "Englishman In New York." While continuing to write, Crisp has made numerous lecture appearances, appeared in projects as far afield as the films Orlando (1992) and To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar (1995) and ads for Calvin Klein perfume and Levi's jeans. His latest book is this year's Resident Alien: The New York Diaries. Crisp recently spoke to The Onion about England versus America, acting in the movies, and the importance of being courteous. The Onion: More people probably know your name or face than know who you are or anything about your life, so maybe you could give us a short history of it.

Obituaries

October, 1999
For every Sting or Marianne Faithful who wanted to meet Quentin there were thousands of ordinary people who called him and made the trek to lunch with Quentin and be in his presence. At the end of the lunch only we were left. While Quentin did this every day, year in year out, it was only at the end of his life that I truly understood the significance of his open door policy. A combination of the beatific audience, the ordinary and everyday access to human experience and the paid for meal.

Quentin Crisp Out Of This World
By Elizabeth Hollander Showing off is not exclusively a matter of bullying one’s way to fame. Exhibitionism may often be the means of fulfilling a desire – not for power or sex or fame, like Presidents and rock stars – but rather to be left alone. Quentin Crisp was a spokesman for and peerless practitioner of this peculiar mode of exhibitionism whereby public exposure is a kind of protective armor. Born to depressing English middle-class banality he made a typically dramatic entrance on Christmas Day, 1908. His father was a lawyer, his mother had been a nursemaid: both were obsessed with respectability. His sickly childhood in a South London suburb was marked by fecal incontinence, his first form of self-exhibition, which resulted in regular beatings by schoolmates. His memoir darkly hints at sexual molestation in early childhood, which he claimed to wish he could remember. Entranced by the theater and the movie stars of the 20s, he began experimenting with makeup and long hair in adolescence. At age 21, without prospects or ambition, he moved to London. There he discovered for the first time that he was not alone either in being gay or in acting effeminate. He was, however, alone in his determination never to disguise himself as an ordinary citizen. Within a few years he was a confirmed misfit, gadding about Soho in elaborate getup, which was never, strictly speaking, drag. He always wore men’s clothing under the painted face and feminine accessories. This determined ambiguity contributed to his failure as a male prostitute: clients wanted either discretion or disguise. Later in life he provoked a similar dissatisfaction with gay activists, insisting both that homosexuality was an aberration and, interestingly enough, a private matter.

QUENTIN CRISP Writer and gay rights activist "Never keep up the Joneses; drag them down to your level. It's cheaper." Quentin Crisp died in his sleep in a private home in Manchester, England, on November 21. He was 90 and was preparing for a theatrical tour in his native Britain. Known for his wit, flamboyancy, eccentricity and the proud celebration of his homosexuality, Crisp was born Dennis Pratt in Surrey in southeastern England in 1908. He moved to London in the 1920s, working as a book designer, prostitute and nude model. His book "The Naked Civil Servant," remembrances of living an openly gay lifestyle during a time of public hostility, was published to good reviews in 1968. His other books included "How to Have a Lifestyle" and "Resident Alien." In 1978, he debuted Off-Broadway in "An Evening with Quentin Crisp." Crisp moved to New York City in the 1980s and lived in a one-room flat on the Lower East Side, where became a fixture of the city's gay culture. Crisp played cameo roles in several films, including the part of Queen Elizabeth I in "Orlando." In 1987, British rock star Sting wrote a homage of sorts to Crisp in his hit song, "An Englishman in New York."

An Interview with
QUENTIN CRISP
preview, An Evening with Quentin Crisp
by Linda Eisenstein
It's simple. Quentin Crisp wants you to be happy. And he can't understand why you're not. "In England there is no happiness," says the venerable British writer, now a blissful Manhattanite. "Here, happiness rains down from the skies." Then he sighs into the phone, a rueful catch to his voice. "Americans," he says sadly, "want luxury more than they want happiness." At 90, regal and mischievous as ever, Quentin Crisp is a legend not just for his writing, but for his very way of being. He's a delightful conversationalist: epigrams bubble from him like vintage champagne. After an hour's chat, you'll find a giddy smile wreathing your face. Cleveland audiences can finally share the bounties of his personality. With his first area appearance, he brings his dry wit and wisdom to Cleveland Public Theatre Thursday. In " An Evening with Quentin Crisp ", he will hold court for three days extemporizing for an hour, then answering audience questions. Crisp has been charming audiences with his gently outrageous opinions in this informal setting since the late 1960's, when his agent first booked him in a London pub.

Quentin Crisp (Malcolm)
Quentin Crisp's role as Malcolm in HOMO HEIGHTS is his first starring role in a feature film. He is best known as an author and provocateur whose amazing life is brilliantly documented in his 1968 autobiography, "The Naked Civil Servant," which later spawned a TV-film version starring John Hurt. Both the book and film won accolades and awards. With these successes, Mr. Crisp became the elder statesman of a certain vintage type of homosexuality, gravely wounded but endlessly resilient. Other books followed including "Love Made Easy" (1977), "Chog: A Gothic Fable" (1980), "How To Become A Virgin" (1982), and "How To Go To The Movies" (1988).
A native Britisher, Mr. Crisp traveled in the United States and upon seeing New York City, "wanted it." He set up residence in the Big Apple soon thereafter and began touring the U.S. with his one man show, "An Evening With Quentin Crisp," playing to sold out audiences nationwide. In his 1993 film debut as Queen Elizabeth I in Sally Potter's Orlando, the 84 four year old Crisp literally steals the show. Since that time, Mr. Crisp has been seen in Calvin Klein's 'CK One' commercials and in print ads for LA Eyewear and has made cameo appearances in several films, including Philadelphia and To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar. His memoirs of life in New York, "Resident Alien," was recently published as has a new edition of "The Naked Civil Servant."

Quentin Crisp - A Tribute
Quentin Crisp
In Remembrance
Quentin died on Sunday 21st November 1999 at a house in Manchester, England. He was due to present his one man show at the Manchester Library Theatre for a week commencing on the following day as part of a UK tour.
He had told us that he was waiting to die. It seems ironic that he died in the country from which he had fled into exile.
"We will remember him."

Quentin Crisp moved from London to New York in 1981 at the age of 72. His "exile" has obviously been wildly successful as he now seems to have found some contentment, despite his "waiting to die" approach to his ninth decade (he reached ninety years of age on Christmas Day 1999).
A friend and I were at the end of a late evening meal. A little wine and talk about our planned trip to New York a few weeks later led to chatting about Quentin.
The text that follows is written by Daniel Walker and is a vivid, personal retelling of our subsequent meeting with Quentin Crisp.
I remember, as a child, seeing a television broadcast of "The Naked Civil Servant". Watching my television in a small market village in Wiltshire, with my mother and father, I had my first introduction to Quentin Crisp.

ABOUT QUENTIN CRISP SINGLE CASK MALT SCOTCH WHISKY When we asked Quentin Crisp to put his name to our new Scotch Whisky we realised that we were the first company to go one step further than marketing existing brands of Scotch to the Gay community. Our product is bottled specifically for the Gay community. Robert Burns the famous Scottish poet wrote " Freedom and whisky gang thegither " which is Scots for freedom and whisky go together. Quentin in his own way courageously pursued the freedom to exist on his own terms and that is why we asked him to become involved with our product. The whisky is filtered and bottled straight from the cask in which it was matured. Unlike most processes which involve dilution to ensure uniformity over millions of bottles, ours guarantees that the 200 or so bottles from each cask are subtly different from those from another cask. We bottle at a typical strength of 58% alcohol by volume, 118% American proof. Don't let the strength put you off. Drink it neat (as Quentin does), with water, with soda or as a cocktail ingredient. You won't be disappointed. This Scotch is smooth. Each label bears the number of the cask from which the whisky was bottled and if you are a bit of a sleuth you might be able to work out from which distillery the whisky came. Reserve a bottle of Quentin Crisp Scotch Whisky This will take you back to the index For information on our whisky products mail our Marketing Director, Mike Bell
