Robert Creeley Yesterday I wanted to speak of it, that sense above the others to me important because all that I know derives from what it teaches me. Today, what is it that is finally so helpless, different, despairs of its own statement, wants to turn away, endlessly to turn away. from "For Love" Born in Arlington, Massachusetts, Robert Creeley attended Harvard but dropped out before taking his degree. After living in the south of France in Aix-en-Provence and in majorca, Spain, where he founded the Divers Press, he joined teh faculty of Black Mountain College in 1954 at the invitation of Charles Olson . There he founded the Black Mountain Review . While Creeley left the college itself in 1955, his influence on Black Mountain poetics has been significant. Associated with the State University of New York at Buffalo since 1966, he was named poet laureat of the state of New York in 1992. Quoted at length from Postmodern American Poetry, A Norton Anthology "Oh yes, the sentence," Creeley once told the critic Burton Hatlen, "that's what we call it when we put someone in jail."

Robert Creeley is one of America's greatest living poets; he was the link between the Beat poets of Greenwich Village and those of Black Mountain College. Creeley has long acknowledged the influence of jazz and improvised music on his work. In this collaboration of music and poetry, recorded live 9/98, Creeley reads his texts while the extremely talented band of David Torn [guitar, processing], Steve Swallow [electric bass], David CasT [saxes, bass clarinet] and Chris Massey [drums, percussion] provide a lively mesh of music that supports and augments the reading. This disc provides a permanent record of the quintet's emotionally moving performance, a work of art in which poetry, music and process become one. Robert Creeley
A Biography
Faas, Ekbert. With Maria Trambacco
The first fifty years in the life of a great American poet.
Robert Creeley, one of the most revered voices of contemporary American poetry, has attained an almost legendary status, based on his role in such avant-garde movements of the fifties as Black Mountain, Tish, and the Beats. Ekbert Faas focuses on the first fifty years of Creeley's life years of rebellion, restless travel, tumultuous liaisons, and anger and violence, that gave his writing a raw candor. Along the way he developed a flair for noticing the talent of others, and as a small press publisher and editor he promoted the likes of Layton, Ginsberg, Kerouac, Olson, and Burroughs. Their stars rose while he scraped by, until finally, suddenly, fame arrived. His poetry collection For Love and novel The Island earned him critical acclaim that has outlasted that of his contemporaries. Since then his poetry has become increasingly autobiographical and nostalgic, and now he contemplates the commonplace for inspiration.
In this tour-de-force biography, Faas, a major scholar and critic of contemporary American poetry, pioneers a new kind of life-writing, one that tells its stories through the emotions, thoughts, and, above all, language of the dramatis personae. He exchanges the authorial omniscience of the traditional biography for an utter fidelity to his sources: anecdotes and stories are told, re-told, and told again, always through the words of those who lived them, allowing Creeley to reveal himself beneath the myths created by reinvention, imagination, and wishful thinking.

On Charles Olson
Preface to Charles Olson: The Allegory of a Poet's Life , by Tom Clark
ISBN: 1556433425, North Atlantic Books, paperback, $18.95
This piece is 1750 words or about five printed pages long.
To tell the story of a person's life is an art requiring both facts and determining intuition, a canniness as to how things fit or don't fit, and a wonder about it all that wants to realize an actual presence in a place and time, which are just as fragile, finally, as the images and words that may recall them. Olson's and my time was one still resonant with 19th century hopes, that we might have "better living through chemistry," for example, or that "self-improvement" was something quite possible, given hard work and a viable dream. I can still hear, no matter I would be rid of it, "Lives of great men all remind us/ we can make our lives sublime/ and departing leave behind us/ footprints in the sands of time..." Though it may be inaccurately quoted, I will not look it up.
Like so much in that initiating edge of the American place, Olson was self-invented, made his world both with and of his mind insistently. One recalls W.C. Williams writing, "A new world/ is only a new mind./ And the mind and the poem/ are all apiece." Olson valued immensely what he spoke of as "mindedness."  I would take his sense of one's "second birth," that coming into the world as fact of oneself, to be the possibility inherent, "that we are only/ as we find out we are."  Just so the emphasis upon "the use," that which one makes of oneself and by oneself, the complement to the social body, the "polis," he equally kept primary.
