The Richard Crashaw Society When I am asked, “Well, what on earth is The Richard Crashaw Society, anyway?” Amongst other things there is a strong sense of patriotism, which filters down through the Society from year to year; a real celebration of everything that is, or used to be, British. The Society takes its ideals of loyalty, courage and patriotism from Richard Crashaw himself, the 17th Century metaphysical poet who sacrificed himself for his beliefs while in exile from the regicide Oliver Cromwell. As I am sure you know, November 19th is of course our glorious King’s birthday; I refer of course to Charles I, King and Martyr. The year 2000 was his 400th. Duly, many celebrations went on across the country, and we were privileged to be involved in two of them: High Mass at St Martin’s, Salisbury, and Choral Evensong at All Saints’, Westbury. Both services were superb, with our own Crashaw-affiliated choir Cantores Sanctis Diebus singing beautifully at both. We then carried on the year with celebrations for St Cecilia and St Lucy, the latter of which was an early-morning rise and meeting followed by a scrumptious festal breakfast (being normal School breakfast, but with the subtle addition of spiritually enriched red table napkins). The Lent Term was to see more festivity and revelry, when we celebrated Charles (again) and Shrove Tuesday (a pancake feast). Spiritual Tour VIII was cancelled, because everything west of London was closed owing to the Foot and Mouth crisis. But this did not detract from the Society Dinner, held on March 29th. This was a great success, and a good opportunity to catch up with Old Dauntseians and to become acquainted with new members of the Society. We of course send our thanks to Monica Hoggett and her team for what was a splendid occasion.

Of a sure Judge, from Whose sharp ray

And urge the murmuring graves to bring

    Crashaw, Richard 1612?-1649, one of the English metaphysical poets . He was graduated from Cambridge in 1634 and remained there as a fellow at Peterhouse until the Puritan uprising, when he fled to the Continent (1643). Though he was the son of an ardent Puritan clergyman, by 1646 he had converted to Roman Catholicism. He served for several years as an attendant to Cardinal Palotto, who finally procured him a minor post at the shrine of Loreto, Italy, in April, 1649. Four months later Crashaw died of a fever. Although he wrote secular poetry in Latin and Greek as well as English, his fame rests on his intense religious poetry. His strange mixture of sensuality and mysticism is unusual in English literature and has been compared to the baroque art of Italy and Spain. The principal volume of his work is Steps to the Temple (1646), enlarged to include Delights of the Muses See his complete poems ed. by G. W. Williams (1972).

    Divine Love Lord, when the sense of Thy sweet grace
    Sends up my soul to seek Thy face,
    Thy blessed eyes breed such desire,
    I die in love's delicious Fire. O Love, I am thy Sacrifice.
    Be still triumphant, blessed eyes.
    Still shine on me, fair suns! that I
    Still may behold, though still I die. Though still I die, I live again;
    Still longing so to be still slain,
    So gainful is such loss of breath.
    I die even in desire of death. Still live in me this loving strife
    Of living Death and dying Life. For while Thou sweetly slayest me, Dead to myself I live in Thee. Richard Crashaw (1613-1649)
