Note by Joy Carter Wilson CINQUAIN- unrhymed poems consisting of 22 syllables distributed as 2-4-6-8-2 in five lines. Derived by Adelaide Crapsey around 1909/10. Perhaps as early as in 1909, the shy and sensitive Adelaide Crapsey had read A Hundred Verses from Old Japan, William N. Porter's translations of the Hyakunin Isshu anthology and From the Eastern Sea by Yone Nogushis. In Adelaide's notebook she lists eleven tanka and eight haiku she had translated from Antholgie de la litterature japonaise des origines au XX siecle from Marcel Revon. So influenced, she developed her own poetic system which she then called cinquain. These short, unrhymed poems consisting of twenty-two syllables distributed as 2-4-6-8-2, in five lines were related to but not copied from Japanese literary styles. Though she devised this form in 1909-1910, most of the fifteen poems she saved were written between 1911 and 1914. An early death at 37 from tuberculosis prevented her from exploring the genre further.

Poetry: The Forms and the History The Cinquain, Clerihew and Haiku by Catherine Wilson (Age: 26) 4 Ratings - Ave: 8.25 Age Rating: 13 to 127
Cinquain The word Cinquain is derived from the French word for five. An American poet named Adelaide Crapsey invented the Cinquain. She wrote a lot of poems with this format in the last years of her life. She died early, at the age of thirty-six. The Cinquain is a short, 5-line poetry form, with a distinct pattern. It looks easy to write because the format is short; however, don't be fooled. This is a good poetry format for beginners because it is short, and you don't worry about rhyming. You concentrate on selecting words that create the effect you want to create. Yet, this format is also good for more experienced poets because it is challenging to write in such a short format.

        • Cholera epidemic hits city, killing 120, and filling the city's many small cemeteries. Fear of bodies contaminating groundwater, overcrowding in existing cemeteries and the need of downtown land force search for a new cemetery outside the city. Two sites are proposed, one on the west bank of Irondequoit Bay and the Silas Andrus property 1 1/2 miles from the city on east the side of the river. Extreme hills and gullies on this site and high price cause problems, but this is the location chosen. 53.86 acres purchased from Silas Andrus for $5,386. Mr. Andrus had just purchased the property at $6 per acre, and made a nice profit. Major David Bates Douglass, is asked to layout the cemetery. His proposal to level the hills and remove the trees was immediately rejected. Silas Cornell, the city surveyor was then given the job, and he transformed an overgrown wilderness into one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country.
