September 11, 2001, Pleasantville, New York
Flag by Peter Hartwell, age 3 I got in the car and drove off to relay my messages by hand. The streets were nearly empty. I went into the dentist's office and loomed over David in the dentists chair and told him that under no circumstances was he to set foot in Manhattan today. (I needn't have bothered, because MetroNorth shut down around then, along with the subways and all other means of transportation into or out of Manhattan, and all fights throughout the country.) I drove by Caitlin's. She was out at the park with Will, who just turned two. But the guy wallpapering her dining room, who answered the door, had the TV up loud on a news station and was wiping tears from his eyes. He said Caitlin and Will had gone to the park and Scott (who is a stock analyst) was on a trip to Atlanta. I considered driving back to Peter's preschool to get him because the preschool is three blocks from the Clinton's house, but decided that since Clinton had left office, the school was probably safe from terrorist attack. I drove to the vets. There was no one at the front desk. I knocked and looked around the corner. I explained that I couldn't find my cats and that the phone weren't working. I would call tomorrow and reschedule. The vetenary staff were all clutching dogs for comfort, huddled around the radio. When we arrived at the dentist's office, the staff was sitting hollowed-eyed in a circle listening to the radio. Peter, it turned out, was one of the few patients they had coming in that afternoon because so many had cancelled, presumably to stay home and wait for word from friends and relatives. This was a dentist appointment I had put off for months, because I knew they were going to have to strap Peter down to give him the filings he needed. It was as awful as I expected. About half an hour into it, the dentist complemented me on my calm, saying many parents couldn’t take having their kid scream through a long dentist appointment. I replied that the day's disasters made it easier. "How much more upset could I get?" I said.

Actif email innovation will change the way companies approach e-learning, CRM and e-marketing Monday December 10, 2001 "Actif mail will make the difference between good and great online facilitation" An Australian firm today releases what is believed to be world first technology - multimedia, truly interactive email, that bypasses the need for the user to browse a web site for content. Actif Mail software has been developed for the e-learning market but the technology could give businesses the strategic edge in CRM and e-marketing. Sydney-based Global Competency Systems filed a patent for Actif Mail on November 30. It is currently being trialled with a select number of global firms. CEO Gordon Cramer said Actif Mail would be the point of difference that CRM managers and e-marketers were seeking. "Imagine a mass-market call center. A person phones in with a problem or question. Staff can quickly email simulated software or the information the caller needs. It's immediate, providing information the caller can readily access at any time", Mr Cramer said. "Companies could easily carry out snap assessment of their work force's knowledge on compliance or business issues. "The software includes simulations, which would allow someone to email a set of instructions for anything from software, to new privacy legislation, to how to put together the TV cabinet you just bought."

Excerpt from an Interview with Kathryn Cramer
Taken from The Write Stuff HG:
Let's talk about In Small and Large... KC:
    Sure. HG:
What do you think worked particularly well? KC:
Are you waiting for me to give a thesis statement? OOh. HG:
    Absolutely. KC:
The pacing (if you follow the links) ends up working sort of like the scenes with the kid on the Big Wheel in The Shining. People have fairly fixed expectations that they know when something bad is going to happen in fiction. The link structure of In Small and Large Pieces plays wonderful havoc w/that. Also, I like the way it looks. HG:
The Unified Parent was really fantastic. What was the genesis for It? KC:
I knew there had to be something really awful there. As I recall, they replaced something much more pedestrian. KC:
About 10 years ago, I decided that whenever something I'd seen on wrote, it needed to be replaced by something completely over the top. HG:
If you have an anxiety of influence who is it and why. KC: Anxiety ... well, this one I think is a lot like Tom Carson's Twisted Kicks. Of course, there is also Lewis Carroll all over this thing (literally). Perhaps MC Escher too. Robert Aickman. Do you know Aickman's stuff?

Early Friday afternoon, the glossed-over details of spacecraft design were the subject of "The Spaceship and the Bilges". It featured a panel of authors with their minds in the sewer: moderator Geoffrey Landis, who observed that a Romulan attack never caught Capt. Kirk in the ship's head; Diane Duane, a psychiatric nurse who has seen a few bedpans, and who put Paramount in a tizzy when she put the crew of the Enterprise on a shift rotation; Bob Forward who, when he designs a space ship, designs the bathrooms too, because it has an effect on "the atmosphere of the story" [groan, groan]; Elizabeth Moon, and David Feintuch.

Over the past several years, many of my waking hours have been devoted to the emerging possibilities of electronic text, hypertext, hypermedia and such for narrative. I have seen marvelous things, had a lot of fun, and spent an awful lot of my own money on equipment and software. Over this time, NYRSF has published a number of good articles on science fiction and hypertext by Stuart Moulthrop and others. When I first began a dark fantasy hypertext (published a year ago by Eastgate Systems under the title ) I believed that since there was no possible audience for what I was writing, I could do what I wanted. A year later, I because aware that there is an audience, just no distribution system, save mail order. I began to develop choreographies for that mating dance between literature and money with the intent that a new form of science fiction evolve around the new technologies: a science fiction in which the math and the science can be included in the work as side-roads (when otherwise they would be stripped away), in which illustrations can be included at the author's discretion (because the cost of their printing would not be an issue), and in which the many immensely talented writers working in science fiction today could try their hands at solving the aesthetic problems of the new media. For the moment, I earn a good salary helping produce educational CD-ROMs. (The general fate of those of us who tried to write science-fictional hypertext seems to be that we got good jobs doing something else with the skills we learned doing it. I suppose I would seem foolish if I presented this as tragic.) But there are certain things I have learned to insist on in discussions of how things "ought" to work:
