GREGORY CORSO

Poet Gregory Corso remembered as brilliant Beat force
Gregory Corso, shown in 1993, was one of the circle of Beat poets that included Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac In this story: A hard youth Meet the Beats Toodle-oo RELATED STORIES, SITES (CNN) Beat poet Gregory Corso is being remembered as brilliant yet untamed master of words. "I would say that he was very gifted, also undisciplined, which is part of the beauty of Beat writing," said Maria Damon, an English professor at the University of Minnesota who once studied under Corso. "He was very well-read but not from formal schooling. He put things together in a highly romanticized way." Corso died Wednesday after a battle with prostate cancer. He was 70. He passed away at the Minneapolis home of his daughter, Sheri Langerman, who announced the death on Thursday.

BIOGRAPHIE

Remembering a Poet
Gregory Corso, 1930–2001
by Patti Smith January 24 - 30, 2001 Gregory Corso making a call in the White Horse Tavern, February 1959. (photo: Fred W. McDarrah) regory Corso, the flower of the beat generation, is gone. He has been plucked to grace the Daddy garden and all in heaven are magnified and amused. I first encountered Gregory long ago in front of the Chelsea Hotel. He lifted his overcoat and dropped his trousers, spewing Latin expletives. Seeing my astonished face, he laughed and said, "I'm not mooning you sweetheart, I'm mooning the world." I remember thinking, how fortunate for the world to be privy to the exposed rump of a true poet. And that he was. All who have stories, real or embellished, of Gregory's legendary mischief and chaotic indiscretions must also have stories of his beauty, his remorse, and his generosity. He took benevolent note of me in the early '70s, maybe because my living space was akin to his—piles of papers, books, old shoes, piss in cups—mortal disarray. We were disruptive partners in crime during particularly tedious poetry readings at St. Mark's. Though we were aptly scolded, Gregory counseled me to stick to my irreverent guns and demand more from those who sat before us calling themselves poets.

Era in divisa
con la mazza ai suoi piedi
nodosa e delicata
I AM 25 With a love a madness for Shelley Chatterton Rimbaud and the needy yap of my youth has gone from ear to ear: I HATE OLD POETMEN! Especially old poetmen who retract who consult other old poetmen who speak their youth in whispers, saying :-I did those then but that was then that was then- O I would quiet old men say to them: - I am your friend what you once were, thru me you'll be again- Then at night in the confidence of their homes rip out their apology-tongues and steal their poems.

Entertainment: Ashes of Beat poet Gregory Corso laid to rest in Rome
By PETER W. MAYER, Associated Press
ROME (May 5, 2001 5:48 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com ) - Joining such literary luminaries as Percy Bysshe Shelley and John Keats, the ashes of the American Beat poet Gregory Corso were laid to rest Saturday under a cypress tree in a Roman cemetery. His daughter, Sheri Langerman, wept quietly as she and friends of Corso sprinkled soil and rose petals over the poet's bronze urn. But the ceremony at Rome's Protestant cemetery was also a joyful celebration of the poet's memory marked by anecdotes and readings from his works. About 200 people attended. "Gregory, a full-blooded Italian, loved Rome and would often visit the city. His dream was to be buried near Shelley," his daughter said. Corso drew poetic inspiration from Italian art and literature, but had a love-hate relationship with Rome, said Paola Igliori, a New York publisher, who read his poem, "When in Rome Do as the Romans Do." "In the old days/at least old statues and I/spoke the same language/beauty.../But stone must peel even as an/orange will.../eternal Rome is only here and now."

Gregory Corso, 1930-2001 Poet, playwright and author Gregory Corso, a leading writer of the "Beat" movement of the 1950s and early 60s, died in Robbinsdale, Minnesota on January 17th, 2001. Corso, the last survivor of the tribunal spearhead of the movement consisting of himself, Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, was 70 years old. Unlike other poets of the Beat Generation, who hailed from universities and stable middle-class families, Corso emerged from a life of tragedy and violence that included prison terms and an end of formal education in elementary school. Born on March 26th, 1930, Gregory Nunzio Corso was the son of teenaged, Italian immigrant parents living in New York's Greenwich Village, his father 17 and his mother 16 when he was born. By the time he was a year old Corso's mother had abandoned her child and their Bleeker Street flat to return to her native Italy, and Corso's life from that point on was spent in orphanages, institutions and foster homes. In 1941 Corso's estranged father married and brought his still unadopted son home, only to see the boy embark on a career as a chronic runaway. Gregory Corso was first incarcerated in a standard (adult) facility in New York then known as "The Tombs" at the age of 12 while he awaited trial on petty theft charges (he had been caught trying to sell a stolen radio). By the time he appeared in court, Corso had been so badly abused by other inmates he was relegated to Bellvue for 3 months of psychiatric care and observation. Before he had reached 18, Corso was serving a 3-year sentence for theft at the New York State Prison at Clinton.

Gregory Corso Doubting Thomist Kirby Olson October 2002 cloth, 0-8093-2447-4, $40.00s 240 pages, 6 x 9 Beat Studies Poetry Literature “Use of me what you will . . . [and] good luck.” —Gregory Corso to Kirby Olson (March 14, 2000) “Kirby Olson's study of Gregory Corso will assuredly generate renewed interest in one of modern America's neglected poets. He discovers the depths and intricacies of Corso's work by examining the religious and philosophical underpinnings of his poetry.” —Michael Skau, author of "A Clown in a Grave": Complexities and Tensions in the Works of Gregory Corso Gregory Corso is the most intensely spiritual of the Beat generation poets and still by far the least explored. The virtue of Kirby Olson’s Gregory Corso: Doubting Thomist is that it is the first book to place all of Corso’s work in a philosophical perspective, concentrating on Corso as a poet torn between a static Catholic Thomist viewpoint and that of a progressive surrealist. While Corso is a subject of great controversy—his work often being seen as nihilistic and wildly comic—Olson argues that Corso’s poetry, in fact, maintains an insistent theme of doubt and faith with regard to his early Catholicism. Although many critics have attempted to read his poetry, and some have done so brilliantly, Olson—in his approach and focus—is the first to attempt to give a holistic understanding of the oeuvre as essentially one not of entertainment or hilarity but of a deep spiritual and philosophical quest by an important and profound mind.
