Coover's range life
Restless postmodernist crosses another frontier
BY DEREK WEILER
Grand success stories like David Foster Wallace's 1996 novel Infinite Jest may have sparked a minor resurgence in form-stretching fiction, but that hasn't much changed life for old-school postmodernist Robert Coover. Coover's new novel, Ghost Town (Henry Holt, $33.95), was published in September to little of the fanfare that accompanied, say, Thomas Pynchon's The American's first visit to Toronto he read last week at the International Festival of Authors while well-received, also didn't gather the kind of crowd that might show up for Don DeLillo, for example. Those who did turn up, though, found a literary maverick who's been pushing fictional boundaries for over 30 years. Coover's first novel, 1966's The Origin of the Brunists (about a weird religious cult in a small mining town), won the Faulkner Award, and since then he's produced a savagely satiric body of work sometimes dense and confrontational, sometimes compulsively readable. The Iowa-bred Coover is probably best known for the oft-anthologized short "The Babysitter," with its killer twists in chronology, and the lit-course mainstay The Universal Baseball Association , which lent new, creepy meaning to the term "fantasy league."

Sixteen typed notes signed and eleven autograph notes signed , all written in his capacity as a reader for Harper's and transmitting poetry by others to Harper's for publication, specifying the rate ($2/word; $3/word) that each author should be paid. Although the poetry is not present, some of the poets Carruth has accepted include Robert Bly, Jim Wright, David Ignatow, Joseph Brodsky and Galway Kinnell. His notes frequently offer a brief opinion on the work or the poet in question. Some mention literary matters such as his editing of the work transmitted or other writerly burdens such as deadlines and luncheons. A handful touch on personal matters: the health of his mother; new living accommodations; the weather; immediate contingencies ("I'm trying to roast a chicken;" "My typewriter is busted"). One particularly moving note expresses his feelings on the declining health of Jim Wright. Nearly all the notes are written on Harper's letterhead or notepaper and bear both mailing folds and the publisher's annotations indicating routing and payment information. More than

Chapter One: GHOST TOWN by Robert Coover
(C) 1998 Robert Coover
Henry Holt and Co.
ISBN: 0-8050-5884-2 Books Etc. Chapter One Then one day, climbing up out of a steep canyon cut by a wild frothy river way down below, struggling all the while against some kind of unseen force pressing down on him, almost palpable, as if a big flopping bird were expiring on his chest, having to dismount finally and haul his shying wild-eyed horse up through the last fierce pass, he found himself out upon this vast empty plain, where nothing seems to have happened yet and yet everything seems already over, done before begun. A space there and not there, like a monumental void, dreadful and ordinary all at once. As if the ground the horse treads, for all its extension, might be paper thin and stretched over nothing. He doesn't expect to come to the end of the world out here, but he doesn't expect not to. What he's aiming at is a town over on the far horizon, first thing he saw when he rose up out of the canyon and the canyon shut itself away behind him. The town's still out there, sitting on the edge like a gateway to the hidden part of the sky. Sometimes it disappears behind a slight rise, then reappears when that rise is reached, often as not even further away to the naked eye, his naked eye, than when last seen, like a receding mirage, which it likely is. Sometimes there's no horizon at all, burned away by the sun's glare or night's sudden erasure, so no town either, and his goal is more like the memory of a goal, but he keeps moving on and sooner or later it shows itself again, wavering in the distance as if made of a limp sheet that the wind was ruffling. He doesn't know what it's rightly called, nor feels any need to know. It's just the place he's going to.
