Susan, our clients

that require careful

thoughtful problem solving. As VP of marketing at Enterprise Solutions, Susan knows that sales are hurting because the competition has just added PDA and cell phone interfaces to its upcoming CRM products. Given its tight deliverable cycles, her engineering department insists that it can only add one new interface for the next launch. Meanwhile, stakeholders have strong conflicting opinions as to which (if any) interface to build first. Some people think the PDA interface is a red herring, and the cell phone interface should wait until displays improve. How can Susan determine which features are most critical to her customers? And how can Enterprise Solutions differentiate itself from its competitors?

Return to list of previous winners COOPER, SUSAN
May 23, 1935- Author of: The Grey King , etc. Like my books, I'm mostly English, partly Welsh. I had two homes in Britain: one in Buckinghamshire, twenty miles from London where I was born and raised; the other in Aberdovey, North Wales, my grandmother's village, in which my parents have now lived for the last fifteen years. In 1963 I married an American with three teen-age children and moved to Winchester, Massachusetts. The teenagers are grown up now, and we have Jonathan (1966) and Kate (1967) instead. I discovered I was a writer when I was about eight. Life was noisy at the time, being punctuated by World War II bombs, but we paid no great attention, my younger brother Rod and I. (He's a writer too: very funny thrillers.) It was only twenty-five years later that the bombs echoed again, in a book I wrote called Dawn of Fear I went to Oxford, took a degree in English, and edited the university newspaper. Then I became a reporter and feature writer for the Sunday Times in London, and had a wonderful time exploring odd corners of life for seven years. I wrote an adult novel and my first children's book

The Susan Cooper Interview 1. Who are your favourite children's authors/illustrators? What are your favourite modern children's books? No favourites, but three I specially enjoyed this past year were David Almond's "Skellig", Geraldine McCaughrean's "The Stones Are Hatching", and David Weisner's "Free Fall." 3. What's your favourite place for reading? Sitting on the floor. 4. What's the most unusual place you've read a book in? Up in a small helicopter swooping into the crater of the live volcano Kilauea, in Hawaii. (The book was actually a guidebook - I was trying to look up the date of the last eruption!) 5. What did you want to be when you grew up? A writer. 6. Why did you decide to write/illustrate children's books? See (5). That's why.

INTERVIEW WITH SUSAN COOPER
by
RAYMOND H. THOMPSON
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS
2 JULY 1989
Because she had to fly to California, I missed Susan Cooper on my first trip to the Boston area to interview authors. I had better luck the following year, fortunately, although the weather was predictably hot and humid since it was early July. After the drive up from New York City, her house in Cambridge was a cool and restful oasis. Even so, it seemed a world away from the rocky Cornish coast, the wintry Buckinghamshire village, and the wild Welsh mountains in which is set her series The Dark Is Rising.
Composed of Over Sea, Under Stone (London: Cape, 1965), The Dark Is Rising (New York: Atheneum, 1973), Greenwitch (New York: Atheneum, 1974), The Grey King (New York: Atheneum, 1975), and Silver on the Tree (New York: Atheneum, 1977), it introduces the Grail and several Arthurian characters, the most important of which is Merlin. Though but one element in the broader context of the series, Arthurian tradition provides a dimension that resonates throughout, and it was fascinating to learn how that arose out of the home-sickness she felt for the land of her birth. She told me that her second novel was set in her childhood home of Dorney in Buckinghamshire. I later had a chance to visit the village and to go through Dorney Court and the church in which so many of the events take place. That too was a hot and humid day, but one could still recapture in the mind's eye the wintry scene of Will's struggle against the Dark, so powerfully evoked in her book.
