Billy Collins
Billy Collins is an American phenomenon. No poet since Robert Frost has managed to combine high critical acclaim with such broad popular appeal. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review , and The American Scholar , he is a Guggenheim fellow and a New York Public Library "Literary Lion." His last three collections of poems have broken sales records for poetry. His readings are usually SRO, and his audience - enlarged tremendously by his appearances on National Public Radio - includes people of all backgrounds and age groups. The poems themselves best explain this phenomenon. The typical Collins poem opens on a clear and hospitable note but soon takes an unexpected turn; poems that begin in irony may end in a moment of lyric surprise. No wonder Collins sees his poetry as "a form of travel writing" and considers humor "a door into the serious." It is a door that many thousands of readers have opened with amazement and delight. Billy Collins writes lovely poems . . . Limpid, gently and consistently startling, more serious than they seem, they describe all the worlds that are and were and some others besides.

http://www.grdodge.org/poetry/content_Collins.htm

“Poetry is my cheap means of transportation. By the end of the poem the reader should be in a different place from where he started. I would like him to be slightly disoriented at the end, like I drove him outside of town at night and dropped him off in a cornfield.”
BILLY COLLINS describes his poetry as “a form of travel writing.” Often he uses humor to lure readers into deeper more serious places. His poems have a distinctive way of turning from a straightforward simplicity toward a complex meditation, or from an ironic twist to a lyrical exultation. After I do a few drafts, I type up the poem on a Macintosh G3 and then send it out the door. INTERVIEWER Well, that's certainly the kind of information we're after, but can you tell us about the actual making of what you send out? Could you go through the genesis of a poem? COLLINS There's a lot of waiting around until something happens. Some poets like David Lehman and William Stafford set out on these very willful programs to write a poem a day. They're extending what Catullus said about "never a day without a line." But most poets don't write a poem a day. For me it's a very sporadic activity. Until recently, I thought "occasional poetry" meant that you wrote only occasionally. So there's a lot of waiting, and there's a kind of vigilance involved. I

Cielo Publishing May 1997 Billy Collins, author of five books of poetry, is 56 years old and lives in a restored 1850's farmhouse with his wife Jeanne and his imaginary poetry dog. When I asked him to explain the imaginary dog, he said, "I have been between dogs for a few years." On an impulse to write about a boat when he was 11 or 12 years old, Billy write his first poem. However, he did not become serious with his writing until his late 30's. Billy believes his writing is mostly inspired by Wordsworth, and when asked what particular style he feels most confident writing, he said, "Conversational poems.... lyrics which begin in a relaxed conversational style and drop into introspective depth. I like to start simple and casual, have a sense of a relaxed opening, and use some humor with an air of presumed intimacy.... then I hit them with the heavier stuff." He writes mostly for self entertainment and because poetry offers a human extension of his voice which he hopes will go beyond his death. He desires to convey pleasure to his readers, but also wants them to receive a message with deeper meaning than the casual voice of his writing alludes to. When asked if there was any one thing he would like to do, Billy replied, "Practice piano nine hours a day and become a jazz pianist."

Questions About Angels : Poems Billy Collins Book Description
Selected by Edward Hirsch for the National Poetry Series, Questions About Angels, Billy Collins's fourth book of poems, is available again. Remarkable for their wry, inquisitive voice and their sheer imaginative range, these poems are probing explorations, journeys into the unexpected. Questions About Angels reinforces Collins's place among the most talented poets of this generation. "Billy Collins can be downright funny; he's a parodist, a feigning trickster, an ironic, entertaining magician-as-hero. . . . Without question, Collins writes with verve, gumption and deep intelligence. Not many poets can infuse humor with such serious knowledge; not many can range so far throughout history and look so freshly into the future. Not many can please so thoroughly and still manage to chide, prod, urge, criticize, and teach." Save up to - Order online from Amazon.com

THIS WEEK'S FEATURED POET BILLY COLLINS Reading an Anthology of
Chinese Poems of the Sung Dynasty,
I Pause To Admire the Length
and Clarity of Their Titles It seems these poets have nothing up their ample sleeves they turn over so many cards so early, telling us before the first line whether it is wet or dry, night or day, the season the man is standing in, even how much he has had to drink. Maybe it is autumn and he is looking at a sparrow. Maybe it is snowing on a town with a beautiful name. "Viewing Peonies at the Temple of Good Fortune on a Cloudy Afternoon" is one of Sun Tung Po's. "Dipping Water from the River and Simmering Tea" is another one, or just "On a Boat, Awake at Night." And Lu Yu takes the simple rice cake with "In a Boat on a Summer Evening I Heard the Cry of a Waterbird. It Was Very Sad and Seemed To Be Saying My Woman Is CruelMoved, I Wrote This Poem." There is no iron turnstile to push against here as with headings like "Vortex on a String,"

Duck/Rabbit The lamb may lie down with the lion,
But they will never be as close as this pair Who share the very lines Of their existence, whose overlapping is their raison d'etre How strange and symbiotic the binds That make one disappear Whenever the other is spied. Throw the duck a stare, And the rabbit hops down his hole. Give the rabbit the eye, And the duck waddles off the folio. Say, these could be our mascots, you and I I could look at you forever. And never see the two of us together. Fishing on the Susquehanna in July I have never been fishing on the Susquehanna or on any river for that matter to be perfectly honest.

The Library of Congress Welcome to Poetry 180. Poetry can and should be an important part of our daily lives. Poems can inspire and make us think about what it means to be a member of the human race. By just spending a few minutes reading a poem each day, new worlds can be revealed. Poetry 180 is designed to make it easy for students to hear or read a poem each day of the 180 days of the school year. I have selected the poems you will find here with high school students in mind. They are intended to be listened to, and I suggest that all members of the school community be included as readers. A great time for the readings would be following the end of daily announcements over the public address system. Listening to poetry can encourage students and other learners to become members of the circle of readers for whom poetry is a vital source of pleasure. I hope Poetry 180 becomes an important and enriching part of the school day. Billy Collins
