Getting Down to Business
To mark its thirtieth anniversary, the Southern Association for Women Historians published this volume of lectures given by some of the organization's most illustrious members over the past fifteen years. Taking Off the White Gloves: Southern Women and Women Historians , edited by Michele Gillespie and Catherine Clinton, offers a look at both the scholarship and scholars of southern women's history, at the challenges facing both the women who lived the southern past and the women who attempt to uncover it.
The essays offered in this collection, which were all presented as lectures at SAWH or Southern Historical Association conferences, portray southern women's lives during several eras. In "Columbus Meets Pocahontas in the American South," Theda Perdue covers the colonial period by dramatizing the initial meeting of European men and Native American women. Columbus and Pocahontas, who of course never met, represent "invader and defender, man and woman" (p. 82). Perdue uses the device of a fictitious encounter to examine the misconceptions European men held of Native women based upon cultural expectations. Native women's clothing, adornment, and directness born of an egalitarian society signified for European men uninhibited sexuality. White men, blinded by sexual standards imposed by notions of ownership, could not see Native sexual prohibitions that were based upon spiritual beliefs and respect for the balance of nature.

Parlor Politics: In Which the Ladies of Washington Help Build a City and a Government by Catherine Allgor
An Interview with Catherine Allgor, author of Parlor Politics In his comment on your book, Jefferson biographer Joseph Ellis describes you as arguing that Washington government in the early republic actually needed women to function. What did these women do? Well, the official men of Washington had two conflicting jobs. In 1800, Thomas Jefferson and his followers wanted to build a capital city and a federal government, ensuring the stability of the nation. At the same time (and here's the problem) they wanted to do it using a political theory called "republicanism," which had never been tried in a modern context. Republicanism was against a lot of what we would call politics, including the interplay of politicians working for interests, the use of social events for political purposes (schmoozing!), and the presence of women and families in political systems. It was a very virtuous, high-minded theory. But unfortunately, when you want to build a government, a nation, and a capital, you need politics. So while their menfolk were trying to appear as "republican" as possible, the women of political families took over the dirty work of politics. Using social events, they built the extraofficial structures that government needs, they got legislation passed and jobs for constituents, and they forged networks of interests among the other ruling families at the capital. They created an alternative political culture, one parallel to the official structurethey built the political machine.

Women Soldiers, Nurses, Slaves and Homemakers All Contributed and Suffered in the Civil War
    by Alice R. O'Grady
Staff Writer Catherine Clinton began her Amphitheater lecture Friday morning by pointing out that as a child she didn't tour Civil War battlefields or have rows of tin soldiers on shelves in her room.
Study of the Civil War has changed, partly thanks to Ken Burns' television documentary. People are looking at the words of participants and of their own responses to the war.
Now, she said, historians are adding hearts and minds to a school dominated by guns and butter. Marriage across the Line
Clinton, a visiting professor of history at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., first discussed the cases of several women who married across the Mason-Dixon Line. One Northern bride, she reported, felt alienated when the war started and she was in Augusta, Georgia.
