The World of Beverly Cleary Beverly Cleary After graduation from junior college in Ontario, California, and the University of California at Berkeley, Mrs. Cleary entered the School of Librarianship at the University of Washington, Seattle. There she specialized in library work with children. She was Children's Librarian in Yakima, Washington, until she married Clarence Cleary and moved to California. The Clearys are the parents of twins, now grown. Mrs. Cleary's hobbies are travel and needlework. Mrs. Cleary's books have earned her many prestigious awards, including the 1984 John Newbery Medal for Dear Mr. Henshaw , for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children in 1983. Her Ramona and Her Father and Ramona Quimby, Age 8 were named 1978 and 1982 Newbery Honor Books, respectively. Among Mrs. Cleary's other awards are the American Library Association's 1975 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, the Catholic Library Association's 1980 Regina Medal, and the University of Southern Mississippi's 1982 Silver Medallion, all presented in recognition of her lasting contribution to children's literature. In addition, Mrs. Cleary was the 1984 United States author nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Award, a prestigious international award. Equally important are the more than 35 statewide awards Mrs. Cleary's books have received based on the direct votes of her young readers. The Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden for Children , featuring bronze statues of Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ribsy, was recently opened in Portland, Oregon.

Tell me a story.' Finally, because she was worn out by my whining and because she was lonely for books herself, she started a small library in a lodge room upstairs over a bank. 'There is entirely too much gossip in Yamhill,' she said. 'People should read.' Books shipped from the State Library were shelved in a donated china cabinet. Saturday afternoons Mother acted as librarian while I sat in a slippery leather chair listening to the patrons' unstoppable gossip and looking forward to evening when Mother would read to me from one of these books. More English Fairy Tales edited by Joseph Jacobs was my favorite. "When I was six years old we moved to Portland where I was awed by the beauty of the downtown public library and stunned by the size of the boys and girls room. Shelves and shelves of books, all for children! (I would have been even more stunned if I had known that room would someday bear my name.) Every two weeks Mother and I traveled by streetcar to the library for books.

Beverly Cleary Biography Beverly Cleary was born in McMinnville in Yamhill County , Oregon on April 12, 1916. If you like her books, you might want to read more about her in her own memoirs, The Girl from Yamhill , published in 1988, and My Own Two Feet , published in 1995. Both books were published by the William Morrow Co. If you can't find these books, you can get them on interlibrary loan through your public library. Please ask. She went to college and became a librarian, just like me. She and her husband, Clarence, are the proud parents of twins, a boy and a girl, who are all grown up now, of course. The Clearys live in Carmel, California . My favorite books are the Ramona Quimby books. These, with the Henry Huggins books, are considered classics in children's literature. Henry Huggins was her first published book in 1950! The settings [place where the story happens] is Portland, Oregon. Northeast Portland has a Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden with sculptures of Ramona, Henry Huggins and his dog Ribsy. You can see Ramona's statue there. There are also some pictures of Beverly Cleary and her husband, Clarence, at that WWW link. The photo you see at the top of the page comes from that page. Her books are among the first "chapter" books we read in school, usually anywhere from second to fourth grade. I like the Ramona books because they are realistic. It's not always easy being young. HOME "Beverly Cleary's Childhood Memories Make Great Children's Stories" By Barbara Smith They have immortalized few fictional characters in bronze and few authors have been honored with their on sculpture garden. Yet, characters from Beverly Cleary's beloved series of children's books gleefully "romp" in Grant Park in Portland. "Ramona Quimby," the whimsical scamp joins "Henry Huggins" and his dog "Ribsy," other series' characters, in the new Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden for Children, which opened in October 13, 1995. The sculptor, Lee Hunt also presented the Gresham Regional Library with two terra cotta busts of "Ramona": one smiling smugly, and one frowning angrily. At both occasions, Beverly Cleary greeted old and new fans. For forty-five years Beverly Cleary has written winsome books for young readers; books well-received by both readers and critics. Her approach has been to been to write not what children ought to read about, but what they want to read about. As a reluctant reader herself, she has described a strategy to encourage young readers: "Although children long for laughter, too often . . . adults feel the purpose of any book is to teach . . . Children would learn so much more if they were allowed to relax, enjoy a story, and discover what it is they want or need from books. They might even learn to enjoy reading, especially if they found in the early grades humorous books that make them laugh." (

Jane Yolen I can see Cleary now INTERVIEW BY MIRIAM DRENNAN We haven't read any new Ramona Quimby adventures in about 15 years, but she is back, and she is more fun than ever. Ramona's World finds Ramona entering the fourth grade, longing for a best girlfriend, and still being happily disgusted by Yard Ape. BookPage had the delightful opportunity to talk to Newbery Medalist Beverly Cleary about her writing, her life, and her beloved Ramona Geraldine Quimby. Cleary became interested in writing for children because reading meant so much to her as a child. "I was a great reader of fairy tales. I tried to read the entire fairy tale section of the library: Andrew Lang's Blue Fairy Book, Red Fairy Book, and so on, probably down to the Puce or Chartreuse fairy tales," she laughs. These days, Cleary reads biographies and some fiction by English women writers. Ramona was first introduced to readers in the 1950s as a peripheral character (Cleary interjects "a nuisance") in the Henry Huggins books. Had she visualized developing Ramona's character, or did Ramona take on a life of her own? "Well, I didn't visualize anything more about Ramona. In fact, she was an accidental character. It occurred to me that as I wrote, all of these children appeared to be only children, so I tossed in a little sister, and at that time, we had a neighbor named Ramona. I heard somebody call out, 'Ramona!' so I just named her Ramona."
