His best-known work, Fontamara , is a dramatic account of peasant life in the Abruzzi, where he was born in 1900. Home Glenn L. Martin and A. James Clark Two benefactors have been instrumental in the development of the Clark School. Glenn L. Martin In 1944, on the fiftieth anniversary of engineering at the university, aviation pioneer Glenn L. Martin established an endowment to support engineering education and research, with an emphasis on aeronautics. Half a century after its establishment, the Minta Martin Endowment, named in honor of Martin's mother, has effectively endowed the research program in engineering. The Glenn L. Martin Institute of Technology was so named to pay tribute to his far-reaching generosity. Martin was a self-taught engineer and aviator who founded the Glenn L. Martin Company in 1911. Martin built his first airplane at age 21 and pursued the challenge of aviation throughout his life. His company produced planes for the U.S. Army during World Wars I and II. By 1939, the Martin Company was the largest aircraft factory in the United States, employing more than 53,000 people at its peak in the 1940s. Throughout the war years and later, Martin was a member of the Board of Regents at the University of Maryland.
