Contemporary critics, who often missed the subtle use of protest in the stories, applauded "The Conjure Woman" but became disenchanted with Chesnutt when he began to treat taboo themes such as miscegenation and racial hatred, in the "Wife of his youth and Other Stories of the Color Line," his second collection of short stories, Chesnutt portrayed the dilemma of mulattos who felt alien in he black community and excluded from the white, he satirized the race conscious Blue Veins of Cleveland (people of Negro descent with skin light enough to show the blueness of their veins) for snubbing their darker skinned relatives, and mimicking the middle class whites.
Disturbed by violence and discrimination against blacks in the South, Chesnutt began to write propagandistic novels espousing racial harmony and understanding. His sympathetic treatment of erotic love between blacks and whites in his first novel, "The House Behind the Cedars" outraged critics of his day. Pessimism pervades his later work, prompting William Dean Howells, an early champion of Chesnutt's, to criticize "The Marrow of Tradition" for its bitter tone. Modern critics have attacked the heavy melodrama, facile coincidence, and overt didacticism of the novels. However, some critics praise Chesnutt's objectivity in the so-called propaganda novels, citing his willingness to portray a broad cross section of the black community, including accommodationist professionals, sycophants, and rebels.

    CHARLES W. CHESNUTT
Charles Waddell Chesnutt was born to free blacks Andrew Jackson Chesnutt and Anne Maria Sampson, in Cleveland, Ohio, on 20 June 1858. Chesnutt's parents had recently emigrated from Fayetteville, N.C. After the Civil War, when he was eight years old, Chesnutt's parents returned to Fayetteville, where Charles worked part-time in the family grocery store and attended a school founded by the Freedmen's Bureau. In 1872 financial necessity forced him to begin a teaching career in Charlotte, N.C. But he soon returned to Fayetteville in 1877 to become an instructor in the new State Colored Normal School. He was appointed principal the following year and married Susan Perry. During this time, he continued to pursue private studies of the English classics, foreign languages, music, and stenography. Despite his successes, he experienced constant discrimination. His continued longing to develop the literary skills would, by 1880, led him toward an author's life. After a brief stay in New York, in 1884 he moved his family (which now included three children) to Cleveland. Chesnutt worked as a court reporter until he passed the state bar examination(with the highest score), and established a successful legal stenography firm.

Chesnutt, Charles Waddell 1858-1932, American author and lawyer, b. Cleveland, Ohio. In 1887 he was admitted to the Ohio bar. His short stories were first published in the Atlantic Monthly and syndicated newspapers. At first, his publishers withheld the fact that he was black. A sensitive chronicler of life in the Reconstruction South, he is best known for The Conjure Woman (1899), a series of stories about slave life. His other writings include a volume of stories, The Wife of His Youth (1899), and the novels The House Behind the Cedars (1900) and The Colonel's Dream (1905). Critics consider his finest novel to be The Marrow of Tradition See biographies by H. M. Chesnutt (1952), J. N. Hermance (1974), and Frances R. Keller (1977); studies by S. L. Render (1974) and W. L. Andrews (1980).
