'Wommen desiren to have sovereynetee

(from Canterbury Tales)
Ceoffrey Chaucer was born in London. His name was of French origin and meant shoemaker in French. He was the son of a prosperous wine merchant and deputy to the kings's butler, and his wife Agnes. Little is known of his early education, but his works show that he could read French, Latin, and Italian.
In 1359-1360 Chaucer went to France with Edward III's army during the Hundred Years' War. He was captured in the Ardennes and returned to England after the treaty of Brétigny in 1360. Chaucer was so valued as a skilled professional soldier that his ransom, £16, then a tidy sum, was paid by his friends and King Edward. There is no certain information of his life from 1361 until c.1366, when he perhaps married Philippa Roet, the sister of John Gaunt's future wife, and one of Queen Philippa's ladies. Philippa apparently gave him two sons, 'little Lewis', to whom Chaucer addressed A Treatise on the Astrolabe (1391), and Thomas, who was later highly successful in public service. Philippa died in 1387 and Chaucer enjoyed Gaunt's patronage throughout his life. He was in the King's service, held a number of positions at court, and spent some time in Spain.

(c. A.D.1342-1400)
Online Medieval and Classical Library Release #25
Composed by the English poet Geoffrey Chaucer, probably sometime around 1385-86. The text of this edition is based on that published in THE COMPLETE WORKS OF GEOFFREY CHAUCER, vol. III (Ed: W.W. Skeat; 2nd Edition, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1900). This text is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN in the United States. This electronic edition was edited and prepared by Douglas B. Killings ( DeTroyes@EnterAct.COM ), November 1996. Proofreading by Diane M. Brendan ( DMB10001@AOL.COM ), December 1996. Preparer's Note CONTENTS
  • Prologe
  • Balade
  • I. The legend of Cleopatra
  • II. The Legend of Thisbe ...
  • IX. The Legend of Hypermnestra
APPENDIX PREPARER'S NOTE: The prologue of this work is extant in essentially two versions, commonly referred to as the "A-Text" and the "B-Text". The "B- Text" is generally considered Chaucer's final version, and is here incorporated into the main text. However, because the earlier "A-Text" differs substantially in many parts from the "B- Text", it has been added to this edition as an Appendix. There are two recognized systems of line numbering for this work, and critics have long debated as to which is the more appropriate. The most common method is to number the lines from the beginning of the "B-Text" Prologue. However, some critics assign numbers from the beginning of each section. This electronic text principally follows the former convention; however, line numbers from the beginning of each section have also been added, and are indicated by PARENTHESIS (XXXX).

Did you know? He was captured in The Hundred Years' War and ransomed for £16 pounds, about £30,000 in today's money. Critical verdict Widely acclaimed in his lifetime as "the flower of eloquence" - love poet, philosopher and translator - Chaucer's Wessex dialect played a part in forming modern English and he's been in the pantheon ever since. Critics have found in him, as in Shakespeare, contradictory values: though some eras bowdlerised the bawdy, he's been celebrated as Christian thinker, pagan philosopher, worldly sensualist and even, with what could be termed unreliable narrators, the first postmodernist.
