Dev Benegal ushers in a new generation of Indian cinema
Dev Benegal English, August has been selected for over 20 film festivals, winning the Silver Grand Prix at Festival des 3 continents, Nantes, France, the Gilberto Martinez Solares prize for the Best First Film at Festival des 3 continents, Special Jury Award at the Film Festival Torino and the National Award for Best Feature Film (English) at the National Film Awards India, 1995.
Rahul Bose as Agastya Sen. Benegal, who is a nephew of the renowned film director Shyam Benegal, worked with him on several films before going on to produce his own award-winning documentaries, including Anantarupam (The Infinite Forms). Field of Shadows for Channel Four looked at the politics and performance of the Ramlila. Salim Shah as Srivastava, the collector. The casting is superb, with Rahul Bose, a leading actor from Bombay theater, playing the role of Agastya Sen, the frustrated civil servant trainee. The petty politicians, the pencil-pushing bureaucrats, the heavily-accented lowly peons all seem to be so well schooled in their professions, and not like actors at all. Even the frog of Madna has his own idiosyncratic personality. Many are deliciously real people, non-actors who are part of a small town landscape while others are talented theater actors who after the success of the film have become big stars Rahul Bose, Salim Shah and Shivaji Satham. Dev Benegal was in New York recently for the premiere of English August at the Museum of Modern Art in the New Director/New Films Series organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center. The film also had a packed screening at Cornell University where the crowd was made up both Indian Americans and mainstream Americans.

Rudyard Kipling's Kim, for example, is a clear portrayal of colonial attitudes towards the natives. Inherent in these attitudes was the belief that it was India's destiny to be ruled by England and that it was the white man's mission to rule the dark and inferior races. Another noted writer of the colonial era was Jim Corbett.

was notable was the fact that although both writers are Indians, it did not evoke the surprise that it might have earlier. The Ground Beneath Her Feet An Equal Music are matter-of-factly taken as two more additions to the vast corpus of an area of literature now identified as "Indian Writing in English", which, having gained recognition in the West, has become the subject of numerous Web-sites and English department courses, and continues to generate interest both at home and abroad. The God of Small Things (1997) that took Indian writing to new heights of recognition, but the easy acceptance it received followed those who had been there earlier. in 1981, followed by The Satanic Verses which, due to the fatwa The Circle of Reason and The Shadow Lines English August: An Indian Story Golden Gate and A Suitable Boy Totter-Nama, Such a Long Journey and A Fine Balance Rich like Us Plans for Departure (which links Western suffragette activism with Indian nationalism at the turn of the century), others self-consciously engage in the task of subverting social structures that attempt to subordinate women in the name of tradition. Masks of Conquest
Contemporary Indian writing acquires special significance in a world increasingly identified as a "global village" in which, as cultural theorist Arjun Appadarai puts it, movements of "people, technologies, capital, and cultures" constantly establish new transnational links. Even as the rhetoric of globalism debunks nationalist mythologies everywhere, the complex heterogeneity and the multi-locational contexts of this growing body of literature are seen to both cross and subvert the borders erected by narratives of nationalism.

My films are about a new reality denied by Hindi cinema: Dev Benegal
Agreed, Dev Benegal's first film, English August did not create a storm with its release. It did not run to packed houses throughout the length and breadth of the country. It was not even supposed to. But what it did was to show up this gaping need for articulation among the angst-stricken Indian youth, caught in the cesspool of the vernacular and the English.

Unrelieved gloom of the steel frame Upamanyu Chatterjee's latest novel The Mammaries of a Welfare State (Viking, Rs 395) is a tale of serialised angst of Agastya, his protagonist, serving as a sequel to his 1988 novel The English August . The 24-year bureaucrat, eight years ago, was a despondent IAS, lilting in his Anglicised half-Goan, half-Bengali world with a mark of hauteur. He still has his craving for sex and marijuana. But this novel is an attempt at quasi-quixotic revelation of the degree of corruption embedded in our political, social and even cultural dimensions. That is an attempt which makes the novel a wee bit doctrinaire. Upamanyu seems to have a fetish for the phallic innuendoes and seems to take a perverse relish at drawing upon masturbatory images, excremental vision and thus shocking the sensibilities. If what they do to people let them. The art of saying shit sometimes passes for a grand tale of nausea that overtakes a bureaucrat who is so immune to the trouble that he is part of the steel frame.
He talks at length and revels in lurid details that come a bit relevant, if not revolting, to this reader: "A shave pube the colour of toffee and a black and fat tool. He tweaked back the foreskin and didn't notice the rich rings of crud beneath it before his tongue slithered out to tease the pink head". The chief revenue officer of Madna that changed the course of life for Agastya rampages the pages. He is Raghupati who assaults Chamundi, his message boy. The crud has surfaced over the steel frame. And for long 49 pages, run the spiel of Raghupati, the most debased of all. He has, we know, hunger for power. He ejaculates on a memorandum: "Yes, blobs of spunk on dust and cockroach shit. When someone grovels for your favour and you can jerk off on his entreaty - that is

Q. Some people have their own ways of making a difference. But there always lies some inspiration behind the apparently innocuous, yet monumental, task accomplished which makes a difference in the lives of so many. Let me start by asking you this – who/what has been your inspiration in life?

A: In MBA terms, the self-actualization stage. I realized that I was a great merchant banker, but there was more to life than selling shares and debentures and making money; one could do something that positively impacted people. Decisions that I make everyday are totally structured, and criticism is more than intense, all from the numerous pressure groups that operate in the government domain. But I have the chance to do 'good' by maximizing 'stakeholder value' for many, many more people in a more direct manner through every decision I make.
Q. The Shivpuri Vikas Express - I must admit that at first glance I too thought it to be one of those Indian Railways Innovations, that comes down as a budgetary initiative to woo votes. But now I know that it is the name of the bus which carries the functionaries to the respective blocks. Tell me something, this sudden flash of Marketing, or should I rephrase it as a Promotional, which went behind this nomenclature, did it come from your management education? And if it did, how would you delineate management from administrative functionalities?
