The Mystery of Choice , hinzu.

    The Novels of Robert W. Chambers
    Here is a brief summary of some of the novels of Robert W. Chambers (18651933), author of The King in Yellow and many other books. I add entries for titles as I find them and have time to read them. Some of these books have been reprinted by my own Sattre Press and I may do others. Also, since these works are in the public domain, when I publish a print version I also make the original text available online. In this way, I hope the books will survive me. In the Quarter
    . His first novel is a tale of doomed love set in the Latin Quarter of Paris, suggestive of or the 2001 Moulin Rouge film. As a first novel it is pretty well done, although characteristically melodramatic in spots. As I worked on editing and typesetting it I came to like it very much. There are many vivid scenes that should not be missed: student painters jammed into the atelier on a hot day, street riots, a fabulous masked ball, the mad street urchin, and the long interlude hunting and fishing at a lodge in the German Alps. Several characters also appear in The King in Yellow I was startled to find rather raw anti-semitic content. Further, I think these were the author's own sentiments, at least at the time. I struggled with the decision whether to reprint the book (there are types of publicity I don't need) but in the end chose to do it. It is part of history and should not lost. I decided not to add a introduction discussing the matter; the book is what it is and stands or falls as such.

    HOME TO MY MOTHER Whatever merit may lie in this book is due to her wisdom, her sympathy and her teaching AUTHOR'S PREFACE No undue liberties with history have been attempted in this romance. Few characters in the story are purely imaginary. Doubtless the fastidious reader will distinguish these intruders at a glance, and very properly ignore them. For they, and what they never were, and what they never did, merely sugar-coat a dose disguised, and gild the solid pill of fact with tinselled fiction. But from the flames of Poundridge town ablaze, to the rolling smoke of Catharines-town, Romance but limps along a trail hewed out for her more dainty feet by History, and measured inch by inch across the bloody archives of the nation. The milestones that once marked that dark and dreadful trail were dead men, red and white. Today a spider-web of highways spreads over that Dark Empire of the League, enmeshing half a thousand towns now all a-buzz by day and all a-glow by night. But when the Delawares broke faith, then the lash fell and the term "women" as applied to them carried a very different meaning when spat out by Canienga lips or snarled by Senecas.

    ==a critical list with discussions==
    This is a brief discussion of Robert W. Chambers and, of course, of some books by Robert W. Chambers.
    This discussion and list does not necessarily include every book by Chambers; it includes those books that I both know and like. Just as with the author list itself, omission of a particular item may mean I didn't think highly enough of the omitted item, or it may simply mean that I have not yet sufficient familiarity with it. (In a very few cases, I have listed some books merely on the strength of my opinion of the author: all such books are clearly marked below, as throughout these lists, with a hash mark ( ) before the title so you know what's what.)
    I don't pretend that this discussion is a deep analysis. My intent is no more than to give you a rough idea of what kinds of tales Chambers tells, how those tales are usually told, and what makes them and Chambers worthy; in sum, to help you rank Chambers (and the works by Chambers listed here) on your personal literary "to do" list.

    Dodd, Mead and Company - 1929 Chaper IV Mr. Robert W. Chambers is the author of some fifty volumes, including novels, short stories, nature books, poems, and one drama. Known to the majority of readers through his longer romances, he began his career as artist of the brush and gained his first literary triumph by a volume of short stories, The King in Yellow Some years ago, Mr. Frederic Taber Cooper wrote an article on Mr. Chambers (1), which was later attacked in part by Mr. John Curtis Underwood(2). Mr. Underwood says, “If Mr. Chambers thoroughly deserves to be called the prince of wholesale and cheap illusion, of commercialized darkness and flippant immorality in American fiction, if he gets the highest current prices for literary lies and extravagant frivolity based on false social distinction and exclusively patrician ideals; if continually he assumes more than he proves, and alternately professes the most inconsequent triviality in his treatment of contemporary life and pose of the social reformer of society from the inside, when satirizes what he exploits; then it is small wonder that a comparatively large and unsophisticated section of the reading public, who still buy and read his books, are at a loss just where and how to place him.” Here is the expression of an extremist, obviously a thinker concerned about ethical values. But the critic who is artist before he is social reformer will have a different word, Mr. Rupert Hughes, in writing of Mr. Chambers, spoke of his “unusual eye for color, and his delight in beauty of every sort,” and he praised

I also maintain a web site on his life and work. I am trying to find out about the films that were made from his novels. He seems to have had a working relationship with Miss Marion Davies. I know that she made at least one film from a work of his, The restless sex 1918. The Restless Sex (Cosmopolitan Pictures, for Paramount, 1920) - Cast: Marion Davies, Ralph Kellard, Carlyle Blackwell, Charles Lane, Vivian Osborne, Corrine Barker, Edna Rose and Stephen Carr. Directed by Robert Z. Leonard. Scripted by Robert W. Chambers. Story by Frances Marion. 7 Reels. I also suspect that she made at least two other films from Chambers' novels, The Dark Star - 1919 and Operator 13 Chambers wrote a novel named Dark Star in 1917, which has a strong female lead.

    I
    "Let the red dawn surmise
    What we shall do,
    When this blue starlight dies
    And all is through." I went back to my easel and motioned the model to resume her pose. After working awhile I was satisfied that I was spoiling what I had done as rapidly as possible, and I took up a palette knife and scraped the color out again. The flesh tones were sallow and unhealthy, and I did not understand how I could have painted such sickly color into a study which before that had glowed with healthy tones. I looked at Tessie. She had not changed, and the clear flush of health dyed her neck and cheeks as I frowned. "Is it something I've done?" she said. "No - I've made a mess of this arm, and for the life of me I can't see how I came to paint such mud as that into the canvas," I replied. "Don't I pose well?" she insisted. "Of course, perfectly." "Then it's not my fault?" "No. It's my own." "I'm very sorry," she said. I told her she could rest while I applied rag and turpentine to the plague spot on my canvas, and she went off to smoke a cigarette and look over the illustrations in the I did not know whether it was something in the turpentine or a defect in the canvas, but the more I scrubbed the more that gangrene seemed to spread. I worked like a beaver to get it out, and yet the disease appeared to creep from limb to limb of the study before me. Alarmed I strove to arrest it, but now the color on the breast changed and the whole figure seemed to absorb the infection as a sponge soaks up water. Vigorously I plied palette knife, turpentine, and scraper, thinking all the time what a seance I should hold with Duval who had sold me the canvas; but soon I noticed that it was not the canvas which was defective nor yet the colors of Edward. "It must be the turpentine," I thought angrily, "or else my eyes have become so blurred and confused by the afternoon light that I can't see straight." I called Tessie, the model. She came and leaned over my chair blowing rings of smoke into the air.

    Ne raillons pas les fous; leur folie dure plus longtemps que la nôtre ... Voilà toute la differénce. I But self-preservation is the first law, and the United States had to look on in helpless sorrow as Germany, Italy, Spain and Belgium writhed in the throes of Anarchy, while Russia, watching from the Caucasus, stooped and bound them one by one. The fall from my horse had fortunately left no evil results; on the contrary it had changed my whole character for the better. From a lazy young man about town, I had become active, energetic, temperate, and above all - oh, above all else - ambitious. There was only one thing which troubled me, I laughed at my own uneasiness, and yet it troubled me. It was, I remember, the 13th day of April, 1920, that the first Government Lethal Chamber was established on the south side of Washington Square, between Wooster Street and South Fifth Avenue. The block which had formerly consisted of a lot of shabby old buildings, used as cafés and restaurants for foreigners, had been acquired by the Government in the winter to 1898. The French and Italian cafés and restaurants were torn down; the whole block was enclosed by a gilded iron railing, and converted into a lovely garden with lawns, flowers and fountains. In the centre of the garden stood a small, white building, severely classical in architecture, and surrounded by thickets of flowers. Six Ionic columns supported the roof, and the single door was of bronze. A splendid marble group of "The Fates" stood before the door, the work of a young American sculptor, Boris Yvain, who had died in Paris when only twenty-three years old.
