Galway Kinnell's Word Hoard The envelope, please More of this Feature The original Word Hoard challenge
The challenge winner: Lorna Dee Cervantes

Runner-up: Sherman Alexie

Join the Discussion The original challenge
Want to see some of the other poems written in response to the word hoard challenge? Clearly, Galway’s gauntlet pricked the thought balloon of inspiration: thirty-four Loyal Readers responded to Professor Kinnell’s vocabulary test. And picking a winner was tough, tough, tough: would it be Larry Tilander , who threw out Whitmanesque lines in rhyme royale? Selig , who invoked Skinner’s dog? Vicki Barber , who concludes “goggling the semisoft hypnotic fibs”? Or the bravura Yankeedog , who forced the eight required words into but three lines (“Prog my worm with your vagrant saliva”)?

by Carolina García-Aguilera Lorna Dee Cervantes is an accomplished and award-winning poet, a restless activist and an insightful artist. I was fortunate enough to study with her briefly, and, while my poetry may never reach the potential she envisioned, it is better because of her influence. She writes, teaches and lives as a Chicana and a Feminist; she is a role model in a world were few exist for Latina/Chicana/Mexicana writers. This week's feature is the suggested reading is of her poems. Enjoy! Comments (0) Email this entry to:

Respondent: Nancy Gordy October 19, 2000 "Poem for the Young White Man Who Asked Me How I, An Intelligent, Well-Read Person, Could Believe in the War Between Races" by Lorna Dee Cervantes Unsettling America , pp. 248-249 Biographical Information: Lorna Dee Cervantes was born in 1954. She is the author of From the Cables of Genocide: Poems on Love and Hunger Emplumada (1981), which won an American Book Award. She is also co-editor of Red Dirt , a cross-cultural poetry journal, and her work has been included in many anthologies including No More Masks! An Anthology of Twentieth-Century Women Poets (ed. Florence Howe, 1993), and After Aztlan: Latino Poets of the Nineties Course Objectives: Objective 1a: Involuntary (or forced) participation Objective 3c: Mexican American Alternative Narrative: "The Ambivalent Minority" Objective 6: Observation of images of the individual, the family, and alternative Families Interpretation: Ms. Cervantes introduces a dichotomy unique to the minority experience, specifically the Mexican American "Ambivalent Minority". She does this through juxtaposing the world of her imagination versus the world of reality. Her inner universe is peopled with gentle beings speaking kind words, where poets are exalted and art is revered. Reality, however, is vastly different. Right outside her door, it is violent, brutal and cannot be reasoned away. The tension introduced through the image of the two worlds in constant opposition is sustained throughout the course of the poem, until it breaks free with her concluding response to the Young White Man’s question.

Her parents strictly enforced that she and her brother speak English exclusively in order to avoid the racism and genocide occurring in the area at that time. She is a professor at the University of Colorado. She considers herself a "chicana…feminist…political writer." Although her literary works are held in high esteem, she lacks self-confidence concerning her writing. She has only two published works, and has never been a writer who sends out a lot of manuscripts and a lot of poems because of her fear of rejection. She now edits novels and compiles anthologies, along with producing her own works and teaching. Objectives: The objectives covered in this presentation are: 1b- "Voiceless and choiceless"

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
To make Zamora more accessible, translate Spanish phrases, refer students to outside reading that explains the religious beliefs of the Penitents, and encourage students to read poetssuch as Robinson Jeffers , Gullivec, Shakespeare, and Hesse whose works serve as the intertextual basis for some of Zamora's poetry. I recommend that Zamora's work be viewed from a feminist perspective, giving special attention to the serpent motif that is present throughout her work and relating the serpent motif to the symbolism associated with goddesses. I would also recommend that her work be studied from a third world perspective. From this perspective, the student can take into consideration race, class, and gender.
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
The major themes that the writer develops are freedom, justice, love, hate, violence, death, assimilation, and isolation. Some of the issues that the writer develops are the entrapment of women in a man's world, socially and politically; the violence that permeates communities that are deprived economically and educationally; the violence that women as well as men suffer because of the double standards in social values and mores.
