Jeanne Cavelos Chat Transcript
Chat Date: 3 July 2001
Jeanne Cavelos participated in an online chat in the About Babylon 5 Fans chat room on 3 July 2001. Ms. Cavelos is the author of The Passing of the Techno-Mages , a Babylon 5 novel trilogy. The second volume, Summoning Light , was released on this same day. Ms. Cavelos answered a few questions before and after the moderated portion of the chat. They are included here. I have taken some liberties with the order of the comments to keep the answers with the questions. I would like to thank Jeanne Cavelos for taking the time to participate in this chat. I would also like to thank the Babylon 5 webmasters who helped to publicize the chat and the participants who joined us. Hey, Jeanne!!!! :) Hi I never did care much for the Technomages BUT...i'm learning to like them. Hello Jeanne. Hi. I was surprised Del Rey wanted me to write a whole trilogy about them. Funny thing, Galen magelanguage has given me a new appreciation of equations, which helps, especially because I'm taking two math classes this summer. One is finished, thank goodness. Have you learned the equation for fireballs yet?

Jeanne Cavelos Interview
Jeanne Cavelos is the author of the Babylon 5 trilogy, The Passing of the Techno-Mages , and the novel The Shadow Within . She has also written The Science of Star Wars The Science of The X-Files , several works of short fiction, articles, and essays. In addition to writing, Ms. Cavelos has worked as an editor, scientist, and teacher. I conducted this interview with Jeanne Cavelos shortly after the release of Casting Shadows , the first volume of her trilogy. Mike Helba: How did your experience writing The Passing of the Techno-Mages differ from your experience writing The Shadow Within Jeanne Cavelos: I think there were two main areas that differed. First, my interactions with Joe worked a bit differently with the two projects. The Shadow Within started out as a proposal that I wrote, which was about twenty pages long. Basically, I made up the story of what I thought had happened to Anna Sheridan and the Icarus and John Sheridan and the Agamemnon I very much appreciated the freedom Joe gave me. I believe that tie-in novels can achieve excellence, can be art, and I take the writing of them very seriously. As a writer himself, I think Joe understands that to create a powerful book, a writer needs some artistic freedom. Rehashing old plots and following restrictive formulas won't create a great book. The writer has to be allowed to contribute that creative spark, to remain within the given universe but to, in some ways, make it her own. Otherwise the story will be dead on the page.

There were a lot of interesting things to discuss concerning her book, so let's get into it! TFN: When did you first see Star Wars? What was your impression of it? Jeanne: I saw the first movie within the first week or so of its release, in May 1977. I was 17 years old, a junior in high school planning to go to college and study astrophysics. I'd been fascinated with space travel and the possibility of alien life since I was very small. (I used to love STAR TREK, which came out when I was 6 years old. I didn't know the word "Trek," so I thought the name of the show was STAR TRUCK. I kept waiting for the truck to show up.) I loved to think about the big issues raised in science fiction, like, Will the universe keep expanding or will it collapse at some point? Does alien life exist? Could we travel rapidly to other stars? What will we do when the sun burns out? I was completely blown away by the opening shot of STAR WARS (now called A NEW HOPE). As that huge star destroyer flew out of the screen after Princess Leia's ship, I literally felt like I couldn't breathe. I had never seen such a huge spaceship in my life. My heart was racingI was totally hooked. People who didn't see the movies back then don't have the same experience with it. The effects were so much ahead of what had been done up to then; it was an amazing experience. By the end of the movie, I was even more excited. I had never visited such a bizarre, exhilarating, awe-inspiring, fully realized universe. I wanted to live in that "galaxy far, far away." And so I went back and visited, many, many times, for two hours at a time.

Interview by Chris Jackson
Laurie Stuart. "The Science of Star Wars" our universe. Yet this book is not for the faint of heart. Indeed, it is intended for those who love what Lucas has wrought and those with a strong interest in what makes things tick. I found some elements a bit too deep for casual perusal and instead found that each section deserved a great deal of serious contemplation. "The Science of Star Wars" was completely satisfying. I would have liked to see coverage of Mynocks, Ugnaughts, and bears oh my! But the end result would have been tedious and long-winded. Cavelos has wisely chosen to engage our minds, and raise as many questions as she provided answers. Author Jeanne Cavelos was kind enough to answer a great many questions regarding her latest book

Jeanne Cavelos (The Science of Star Wars)
Chat held on Monday, May 10th, 1999 Hosted and Orgranized by Echo Station at www.echostation.com Well, I suppose we can get started, and let the laggers catch up whenever they can :-) What's your favorite star wars movie? From the time The Empire Strikes Back came out. . . until about a year ago, that was my favorite. . . Okay, the room's moderated, which means that only the "OP" folks have a "voice" in the room... I loved how dark it was and how everything seemed more ominous Yet as I was working on the book and watching the movies over, I found the first movie was my new favorite. It has such a perfect, self-contained story, and is just so wonderful. ...please refer any questions you might have to an OP (@echo_dave, @Fish or @Sabrina ...NOT @jcavelos or @jackbot) with a private message. if you're not sure how to do this, just type in /msg @echo_dave before your question. So Jeanne, just to start off with, what's your scientific background?

Good evening. Glad you could make it tonight. We have a little time before the chat begins. Hope you have your questions ready.
Good evening. Our guest tonight is Jeanne Cavelos. "Casting Shadows" is her most recent release. It's #1 in a trilogy about the Technomage. We will get started with the chat in about 10 minutes. While we're waiting, here is some background on Jeanne. Jeanne is a writer, editor, scientist and teacher. She has taught astronomy at Michigan State University and Cornell. And she has worked in the Astronaut Training Division at NASA's Johnson Space Center. Her first Babylon 5 novel was "A Shadow Within". moderator_gg1: Jeanne: I've read a lot of comments on the internet about your new book, Casting Shadows. Can you tell us how you began pulling the book together. guest_gg1: The book is the first in a Babylon 5 trilogy. I received general outlines for the trilogy from the show's creator, J. Michael Straczynski . . . Then I started to think about what kind of people the techno-mages would be . . . They implant extremely advanced technology into their bodies so they can perform acts that appear magical . .. In a way they're part scientist, part magician. I thought of different reasons people might want to become mages . . .and different themes that could be explored through these characters . . .That led me into a really exciting plot.

DarkEcho: 12.17.98 [V.5 #50] When you deal with writers, you get used to meeting multi-talented people with two or more careers. But Jeanne Cavelos has enough talent and career-hats for several folks. She began her professional life as an astrophysicist and mathematician, teaching astronomy at Michigan State University and Cornell University, and working in the Astronaut Training Division at NASA's Johnson Space Center; then moved into a career in publishing, becoming a senior editor at Dell, where she created and launched the Abyss imprint of psychological horror.Cavelos is now a freelance editor, teacher, and is pursuing a writing career. Her latest book is THE SCIENCE OF THE X-FILES, and she is also the author of a Babylon 5 novel, THE SHADOW WITHIN. NOTE: There's a 1996 DarkEcho interview with Cavelos with more about her days with Dell and plenty of sound advice for writers.] Cavelos claims it all started with THE PLANET OF THE APES. "I wanted to be an astronaut like Charlton Heston. Which is kind of strange as I think of it, since lots of bad things happened to him, and he ended up blowing up Earth in BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES. Yet I had that dream of 'boldly going where no man has gone before,' and I wanted to make important discoveries that would change the world for the better. I loved thinking about the cosmic questions raised in science fiction, like 'Where did we all come from?' 'What's going to happen to the universe?' 'Could we ever travel faster than the speed of light?' 'Could we ever clone people?'

By Paula Guran Note, April 2002: This interview is dated, but I'm keeping it on the Web because Jeanne Cavelos offers still-valid advice about the publishing biz and her workshop, Odyssey. Jeanne's gone on to write several more novels and a couple of nonfiction books. Odyssey has just gotten better. There's also a 1998 interview with her on the site.] Jeanne Cavelos is an editor, teacher and writer who established and directs Odyssey, a six-week summer writing workshop for horror/SF/F writers. In her eight years as a professional editor in New York she gained a reputation for her vision, skillful development of writers and strong marketing savvy. She is the recipient of the World Fantasy Award for her establishment and direction of the Abyss imprint for Dell. Her first novel, Babylon 5: The Shadow Within will be published in April 1997. DE: Jeanne, you seem to do it all edit, write, teach, review. You may want to answer this question in several ways, as an editor, fiction writer and teacher: What makes a good story for you?

Jirel of Joiry Moore, C.L. **** The adventures of the first swords and sorcery heroine, written by the first important female writer in moderan American SF. This is pulp fantasy, tinged with horror (the stories were originally published in "Weird Tales"), of the best kind. Watch Jirel travel strange worlds on quests of vengeance and love, battle horrible monsters and evil sorcerers, and generally kick ass. Northwest Smith Moore, C.L. **** Prime pulp SF. Northwest SMith is the most dangerous criminal in three worlds, but in these stories he spends most of his time almost being devoured by horrible creatures older than the human race. In high style. The Science of the X-Files
by Jeanne Cavelos
NY: Berkley Boulevard Books, 1998 I have fallen off the no-TV wagon this last year, like many people in a similar case reassuring myself that it's only a small and controlled exception - namely, the X-Files once a week. I like to think that this regular dose of vicarious paranoia actually has a beneficial effect. (For one thing, coming on Sunday nights, it helps put me in the proper frame of mind for the work week.) There are other attractions: a nice visual style (which'd be spoiled, I admit, if Mulder and Scully ever learned to look around for light-switches), a tale whose unfolding has me hooked (I hook easily), and, hanging off of it like one of Scheharazade's one-nighters, some fine comic moments. The Political Economy of the Federation, which cannot be long in coming.) Cavelos - a recovering physicist - has now given us an equivalent work for the X-Files, and threatens to follow up with one on Star Wars. Since The Science of the X-Files will probably bore and puzzle anyone who doesn't follow the show, I'll take familiarity with it for granted.

Your works have featured Morden more than any of the other books. What's the attraction to the character?
Morden is one of the most mysterious characters on Babylon 5 . Since we see him only a few times in the series, that sense of mystery is never broken. In his role as a servant to the Shadows, we see him doing a lot of very interesting and awful things to the other characters, but we never really know what motivates him. In the terms JMS established, we never really discover who Morden is, and what Morden wants. He appears to believe in the Shadows' agenda, but we don't know why. At first glance he seems totally evil. Since every other character in Joe Straczynski's universe seemed to contain both good and evil, I was immediately drawn to Morden, interested in discovering whether he had any bit of good inside him. There was a lot of room there to explore and develop, which as a writer I found very exciting.
What do you know about Morden that we don't?
