C.P. Cavafy On The Street To Remain
On The Street His compassionate face, slightly wan;
his chestnut eyes, as if ringed;
he is twenty-five years old, but looks more like twenty;
with something artistic in his dress,
-a touch of colour in his tie, a bit of shape to his collar -
he walks aimlessly on the street,
as if hypnotized still by the deviate sensual delight,
by the so deviate sensual delight he has enjoyed.
To Remain It must have been one or one-thirty
after midnight. In a corner of the wine-shop; Except for the two of us, the shop was completely deserted. An oil lamp scarcely burning. The waiter who had been awake, slept now at the door. No one would see us. But we were so excited anyway we couldn't take precautions. We partly undid our clothes - there weren't many as it was in divine burning July. Enjoyment of flesh through half-torn clothes; quickly bared flesh; apparition twenty-six years passed; and now returned to remain in this poetry. This page hosted by Get your own Free Home Page

I cannot answer your question about a bilingual edition (somehow I do not know of one). However I should like to remark about the rendition of the name of Konstantinos Kavaphes in English: he was a thorough tri-lingual; he spoke Greek, English and French, and wrote poetry in all three. His English and French poems have an undistinguished fin-de-siecle quality. And transliterated his name as "C. P. Cavafy." Aristide Caratzas

Date: Mon Aug 06 2001 - 10:17:42 EDT I'm not in a position to judge the quality of the translations, though they read tolerably well, but there is (or was) a very handsome facing text from Princeton: C. P. Cavafy, *Collected Poems*, translated by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard, edited by George Savidis, 1975. I have a vague memory that the paperback (if it actually existed) may not include the Greek. The hardcover appears to be out of print. Amazon lists a used copy for $20.00, but gives the publisher as "Hogarth" (?) and the condition as merely "Good". I haven't checked ABE, but then I already have a copy (and no, it's not for sale). Far Off

I want to speak this memory,
but it's erased as if nothing remains—
because it lies far off in my first adolescent years.
Skin as if made of jasmine,
that time in August— was it August? —evening,
I scarcely remember those eyes: they were deep blue, I think,
ah, yes, deep blue: a sapphire blue. When They Are Aroused Try to keep them, poet, no matter how few are stilled— those visions of your eroticism. Put them, half-hidden, in your sentences. try to keep them, poet, when they are aroused in your mind at night or in the brilliance of noon. In the Street His amiable face, a bit pale; his eyes, a bit glazed; twenty-five years old but he looks twenty; with something artistic in his dress —something about the color of his tie and the shape of his collar— he wanders aimlessly in the street as if still hypnotized by the illicit pleasure, the intensely illicit pleasure he had. Days of 1903 I've not found them again—so swiftly lost

AB/A105 Introduction to Modern Greek Poetry
Teacher Professor Roderick Beaton Course-unit value Prerequisites : None Course outline : The course introduces the major poets and movements in Greek poetry from about 1820 to the 1970s, with special emphasis on: the influential figure of Dionysios Solomos (1798-1857) and on the theme of facing up to the ancient past in the work of five major poets of the twentieth century. Half way through the course, there is a session on the formal aspects of verse in Greek, and their development throughout the period. Texts may be read in either the original Greek or translation. Course content : The course will highlight the main lines of literary development from the oral tradition of pre-1880 and the rise of a national poetry in the 1820s, through the diverse reactions to Romanticism at the turn of the 20th century by Palamas and Cavafy, to the high Modernists of the "1930s generation", Seferis and Elytis and the varied responses of postwar poets to the impact of the Greek civil war (1944-49). Attention will be paid throughout to the close interrelation of literature and history in the Greek tradition, and poems and extracts will be chosen to illustrate recurring and developing themes characteristic of that tradition. Approximately two thirds of the course will be devoted to close reading and discussion of texts (with translation). Four sessions in the second semester will be devoted to metrical and formal analysis.

His poetry is always laden with images often as tragic as they are beautiful. Like Kimon Friar, Edmund Keeley has brought the powerful verse of modern Greeks to the English reader (see the Amazon excerpts of this work). But while Cavafy's explicit poems are alluring, his sexuality poems that are cloaked in metaphor contain the more interesting academic question. Three such poems in particular, "The Bandaged Shoulder," "He Asked About the Quality," and "Days of 1909, '10, '11" give me the same impression: that the sexual message in these poems is conveyed through a method very similar to fetishism. The fetishism of "The Bandaged Shoulder" is more pronounced. The poem tells the story of an occasion where Cavafy had the opportunity to re-bandage the injured shoulder of his lover. The first two stanzas explain how the shoulder may have been injured, and how the lover accidentally re-opened the wound. The first sexual references do not appear until the last two lines of the third stanza, where Cavafy writes, "I liked looking at the blood. / It was a thing of my love, that blood." In the fourth and final stanza, Cavafy finds, after the lover has left, a bit of bloody rag on the floor from the shoulder's old dressing. And only in the last three lines of the stanza is desire clearly evoked: Cavafy provocatively ends "I put it to my lips / and kept it there a long while the blood of my love against my lips." The mood of the poem is one of wrenching desire and sensualism. But the poem contains no explicitly sexual references. The mood is conveyed mainly through the figure of the bloody rag; the sexual meaning accumulates on an object, the forgotten piece of bandage. Cavafy, as a character in the poem, eroticizes the bandage and the process of binding the shoulder: he takes his time over the dressing, he likes looking at the blood. Or rather, we feel that he finds these things sensual, even though he never explicitly makes that connection. The final stanza is very sexual, and is filled with longing, but these ideas are conveyed not through Cavafy's, the author's, usual direct manner, but by the metaphoric substitution of the bloody rag. The fetishism if two-fold: as a character Cavafy sexualizes the bloody rag, and as author Cavafy substitutes the figure of the rag for explicitly sexual references. Both substitutions, both fetishisms, successfully impart a rich sensuality.

    C. P. Cavafy
    C.P. Cavafy was born in Alexandria, Egypt on April 29, 1863 and died in the same city on April 29, 1933. He descended from an old Greek family from Constantinople, then the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Cavafy was educated in England and spent some of his young adulthood in that country. Some of his early work was in English and French, as well as in Greek. Cavafy's preoccupations dealt with the world of the senses and that of history. He was aware particularly of the directions taken by Hellenic civilization through time and the peoples and cultures it affected. Hellenism was for him one of the universal expressions of world culture, perhaps one of the most refined. In 1919 the English writer E.M. Forster visited Cavafy in Alexandria and then enthusiastically introduced his work to the English-speaking world. English literary circles were sensitive to Cavafy's poetic sensibility, so much so that T.S. Eliot came to refer to him as the Poet. There are four major English translations of Cavafy's opus. In this English literary context must be seen the periodic revivals of interest in Cavafy's work. We are experiencing one such revival due to the interest of the late Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in the crystalline verses of the poet: during her fun eral was read the poem "Ithaca," the first of thirteen of Cavafy's poems which are reproduced in this collection.
