BIOGRAPHY Rosario Castellanos (b. 1923) was born in Mexico City, but raised on her family's sugar and coffee plantations in Comitan, located in Mayan southern Mexico. Even at a young age, Castellanos was disturbed by the poverty of the Indians working on her father's land. When Castellanos was a teenager her family moved back to Mexico City, where, after graduating from high school, she studied sociology at Universidad Nacional Autonoma Mexico.
