Carruth, Hayden Notes on Emphysema
Genre Poem (8 pp.) Keywords Aging Anatomy Body Self-Image Death and Dying ... Patient Experience Summary This long poem is divided into 48 segments, each a meditation on the narrator's struggle to live with emphysema. Some sections consist of only one line (10: "How alone can you get?"), others are more lengthy; for example, section 37 is a primer on inhalers, "puffers, " how to use them and what happens if you don't. Every observation in this poem is from a literate poet's point of view, one here focused on emphysema, and so the breath, the body, and the daily rituals of living become primary. The whole world breatheseven the computer, which "sighs" when it is turned off (section 34)but the poet cannot catch his breath. Reading the poem, even silently, the reader becomes short of breath too, physically aware of the patient's limitations. In section 24, Carruth laments that he cannot even negotiate the 500 yards up hill to his son's house; in section 29, he writes that even the dog seems "reproachful" when his owner is unable "to play" and throw the blue ball. The accumulated limitations of these taken-for-granted actions makes the author both "pissed and sorry" for the dog, for the man, for the world.

Emergency Haying
by Hayden Carruth
Coming home with the last load I ride standing
on the wagon tongue, behind the tractor
in hot exhaust, lank with sweat,
my arms strung
awkwardly along the hayrack, cruciform.
Almost 5OO bales we've put up
this afternoon, Marshall and I. And of course I think of another who hung like this on another cross. My hands are torn by baling twine, not nails, and my side is pierced by my ulcer, not a lance. The acid in my throat is only hayseed. Yet exhaustion and the way my body hangs from twisted shoulders, suspended on two points of pain in the rising monoxide, recall that greater suffering. Well, I change grip and the image fades. It's been an unlucky summer. Heavy rains brought on the grass tremendously, a monster crop, but wet, always wet. Haying was long delayed. Now is our last chance to bring in the winter's feed, and Marshall needs help. We mow, rake, bale, and draw the bales to the barn, these late, half-green, improperly cured bales; some weight l5O pounds or more, yet must be lugged by the twine

"A number of times I've been asked to write a proper autobiography," Hayden Carruth writes, "a tight narrative with the usual dovetails, diagrams, and genealogical apparatus. No, I've said. How can I write like that about myself when so much of myself has been constructed by others?" So begins

Exploring the Past to Explain the Present
Ten days after the Battle of Gettysburg, New York City experienced the worst urban riot in American history to date. Whites attacked blacks. Buildings burned. Mobs tore up streets for cobblestones to throw at police officers. Ex-slaves, newly freed by the Emancipation Proclamation and escapees from the war-torn South, were strung up on street lamps. Thousands of people were injured and more than one hundred killed.
The New York City Draft Riots began in part because of Union military policies that allowed men to purchase exemptions from the draft for an exorbitant fee. Those who could not afford the fee, principally Irish immigrants fresh off the boat, resented having to fight in a "rich man's war." Dirt-poor, unemployed and poorly treated by the Yankee establishment, the Irish also resented the competition for scarce jobs and resources posed by the Blacks.
Peter Quinn's monumental first novel

Scrambled Eggs and Whiskey Scrambled eggs and whiskey in the false-dawn light. Chicago, a sweet town, bleak, God knows, but sweet. Sometimes. And weren't we fine tonight? When Hank set up that limping treble roll behind me my horn just growled and I thought my heart would burst. And Brad M. pressing with the soft stick and Joe-Anne singing low. Here we are now in the White Tower, leaning on one another, too tired to go home. But don't say a word, don't tell a soul, they wouldn't understand, they couldn't, never in a million years, how fine, how magnificent we were in that old club tonight. E very contemporary poet has written at least one poem in the form of a to-do list. They're an easy way out of the pit of so-called writer's block. Sometimes they're witty, sometimes boring. None of the many I have read have approached the dry, gently self-mocking humor of Agenda at 74: Tap barometer, burn trash,

for doughnuts.
write President, tap barometer, take baby aspirin, write congressmen, nap, watch Bills vs. Patriots, tap barometer The repetitive steps are sad and funny; that Carruth is poor enough (after a lifetime of crafting acclaimed poetry) to need to "count dimes, count quarters," is sad rather than funny; the details of the poem"go to post/office and ask Diane if/ it's cold enough for her"are one hundred percent North Country, funny rather than sad. As the poem leaps mood in an instant, encompassing more than its slim profile would suggest, so Doctor Jazz as a whole.

Hayden Carruth from Clarification The most commonly misused words in our language are anarchy, anarchism, and anarchist. Every afternoon on the NPR news I hear these words applied to violence in Kosovo, social disorder in the Congo and Chiapas, scenes of mob uproar at rock concerts in Kalamazoo or Albuquerque, and the like. The situation in the schoolyard after the shooting is always said to be "anarchy." Clearly reporters and announcers have no ideaI mean none at allof the genesis of these words in ancient philosophy or of how they've been applied in serious political discourse in the western world for the past two hundred years. An means the inverse. Archy means an organized expression of social and political power, as in monarchy or archbishop. Anarchy means the unState. Often, including passages in my poems and essays, I've said that I'm an anarchist. My readers generally don't know what to make of this. "Well, there's Carruth being a windbag again," they say. But I mean what I write quite seriously, and I wish people would take the troubleit doesn't require muchto find out what the word means. Begin with Mikhail Bakunin, his essays, letters, and pamphlets. After all, for practical purposes he was the founder of anarchism in the modern world in the same sense that Marx was the founder of communism, granting that before them many others made important contributions. Read especially Bakunin's account of the Paris Commune. Bakunin was a Russian aristocrat, a Romantic in the grand tradition of the mid-nineteenth century, a captivating
