IN DECEMBER of 1940 Jorge Carrera Andrade stepped ashore in America at the port of San Francisco, California. Appointed as Ecuadorian Consul General to the United States, Carrera Andrade had just spent four years in Tokyo as a militarized Japan swept through Asia and Indochina. In the past year Belgium, France, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, and Norway had fallen to the Germans. In December of 1940 the Luftwaffe had begun its bombing campaign of Britain. Dark war clouds increasingly loomed on the American horizon.
By 1943 essays by and about Jorge Carrera Andrade were beginning to appear in the major American literary journals of the time. H.R. Hays wrote and published an eloquent appraisal, "Jorge Carrera Andrade: Magician of Mirrors," as the lead feature of the distinguished international literary journal Books Abroad (now World Literature Today ) at the University of Oklahoma. Poetry magazine in Chicago published a major essay by Carrera Andrade (translated from the Spanish by Hays). Although fifty years later the essay, "The New American and His Point of View toward Poetry," seems dated, at the time it was a dazzling survey of the contemporary Latin American poetry scene of the 1940s, a series of snapshots of an exciting and evolving literary scene taken from the inside.
The appearance of the essay in Poetry immediately drew letters from Wallace Stevens and William Carlos Williams. Williams wrote in Spanish from his New Jersey home to the editor of

Heart's Invention: On the Poetry of Vassar Miller
Jorge Carrera Andrade
The Editors of The Drunken Boat are pleased to present an extensive introduction to the well-known Ecuadorian poet, Jorge Carrera Andrade. This issue contains a selection of Andrade's poetry translated from the Spanish by Steven Ford Brown. by Steven Ford Brown
I cannot remember on another occasion finding a place so clear and free of the torment of the spirit that has now become our daily bread. The images of Jorge Carrera Andrade are so extraordinarily clear, so connected to the primitive I imagine I am... participating in a vision already lost to the world. It is a place melancholy but grand.
— William Carlos Williams
Generally forgotten by American literary critics and anthologists, Ecuadorian Jorge Carrera Andrade (1902-1978) has long been considered by Latin America critics to be one of their most important poets. A country the size of Nevada, Ecuador is bordered by the dense rainforest of the Amazon on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other. The country interior includes both lush farmland and the otherworldly volcanic landscapes and snow-capped mountains of the Andes. It's a country of startling contrasts. This is where Jorge Carrera Andrade grew up.

COMRADES: the world is built upon our dead
and our feet have created all the roads.
Also, beneath every sky, there is not an inch of shadow
for those of us who made the cupolas bloom. Bread, blonde grandchild of the sower, a roof - foliage of clay and sun that shelters the family - , the right to love and walk freely are not ours: we are the slave traders of our own lives. Happiness, that sea we've never seen, the cities we'll never visit we lift up in our clenched fists like fruit, announcing the most serious harvest of all time. Only the right to die, comrades of the world! A hundred hands divide the offerings of the earth. Already the time has come to hurl ourselves into the streets and plazas to reclaim the Work we ourselves built. Biography for the Use of Birds I was born in the century of the death of the rose when the motor had already driven out the angels.

http://www.brown.edu/Departments/Hispanic_Studies/Juliortega/Carrerandrade.htm
