Original Query:
From: JASTEELE@macc.wisc.edu "Jeffery A.Steele"
Subject: Constructions of race I am finishing up the design of my course on race in 19th and early 20th-century literature. In a syllabus intended to contain white, American Indian, and black authors, I find that I have few white authors (Poe, Melville, Twain). I am wondering which texts, written between 1870 and 1920 by white authors, members of this list would use as good indicators of racial attitudes in white America. I am especially looking for short stories that could be included in a course reader. Jeffrey Steele

T he mere mention of the name evokes thoughts of patriotism and heroism. For USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) and its embarked air wing, these ideals are a way of life. When the 5,500 Sailors who comprise the GW/Carrier Air Wing Team set sail, they embody "The Spirit of Freedom." The cornerstone of our nation's national defense strategy, the aircraft carrier pro-vides the forward de-ployed flexibility required to maintain United States influence overseas. With the ability to rapidly move from one geographical point to another with over 50 strike aircraft, the carrier plays a critical role in almost every world crisis.
Since commissioning, GEORGE WASHINGTON has made three Mediterranean / Arabian Gulf deployments. During GW's maiden deployment the ship proudly served as the backdrop for the 50th anniversary of D-Day. In 1996, during its second deployment, GEORGE WASHINGTON was host to a historic meeting of the Joint Military Commission comprised of the military leaders of the Former Warring Factions in Bosnia/Herzegovina. The ship also played a vital peacekeeping role in Operation Decisive Endeavor in Bosnia/Herzegovina and enforced the "NoFly" zone over Southern Iraq in Operation Southern Watch.

News Articles: $38.4 Million in New Approach Ramps date: 12-18-1997 Quote: Economics and utility are not the engineer's only concerns. He must temper his practicality with aesthetic sensitivity. His structures should please the eye. IN fact, an engineer designing a bridge is justified in making a more expensive design for beauty's sake alone. After all, many people will have to look at the bridge for the rest of their lives. Few of us appreciate eyesore, even if we should save a little money by building them. - Othmar H. Ammann, 1958 PROJECT OVERVIEW
The George Washington Bridge combines many advances in suspension bridge technology. For example, flexible steel towers and a revolutionary cable-spinning process to lay the pair of 3-foot-diameter cables that make up the bridge deck. The steelwork to the towers was designed to be covered with concrete and granite panels, but due to the natural beauty of the fabricated steel skeleton, the bridge authority decided not to cover it. This decision not only saved money but also allowed the bridge to be opened approximately eight months early.

    The Goal
GWSolutions was approached to create and distribute the essential electronic media elements, including satellite television, videotapes, CD-ROMs, and the Internet-based components for the Star Schools program. The goal was to create a distance learning, media-based literacy and reading program available to parents and teachers throughout the U.S.
    Program Format
The Reading is Fundamental Net (RIFNet) program consists of three distinct services:
    • RIF Exchange - Seventeen television episodes (sixty minutes per episode)
    • RIF In Action - Four television episodes (thirty minutes per episode)
    • Online Resources - Available at http://www.rif.org

RIFNet's programming is distributed via direct broadcast satellite (The Dish Network), local cable companies, distance learning networks, public television stations, and through videotapes. The programs are distributed monthly and consist of information to keep RIF volunteers informed about the latest development in the literacy field, practical applications, and profiles of successful RIF programs and volunteers across the U.S.

Carl S. Swisher Library. Jacksonville University is a private, independent, coeducational, institution, offering a wide range of baccalaureate degrees and selected master’s degrees with approximately 2,000 students. The University traces its history to William J. Porter University which opened its doors in 1934 as a two-year community college in downtown Jacksonville. Within a year, the institution was renamed Jacksonville Junior College to identify more accurately with the city. In 1944, the college moved into the Kay Mansion in the fashionable Riverside area of Jacksonville. By 1950, the college relocated to its present site on the St. Johns River on a beautifully landscaped 260-acre campus. In 1956, Jacksonville Junior College became Jacksonville University and shortly thereafter merged with The Jacksonville College of Music. The library was built in the early 1950s with two later additions and named for the head of Swisher International of Jacksonville, maker of King Edward and Swisher cigars. The library contains approximately 500,000 cataloged items in various formats. On campus is the restored home of Frederick Delius, which once stood on the banks of the St. Johns River south of Jacksonville at Solano Grove. The university has participated for thirty-four years with the Delius Association of Florida and other organizations in an annual festival of Delius’ music, along with a composition competition for young composers. The Swisher Library maintains a separate collection of Delius materials related to the composer and the annual festivals.

The cables of the GWB are 35 7/8 inches in diameter and withstand a pull of 180 million pounds! The original cost of the bridge was $59 million. The Towers were originally going to be encased in stone and masonry but it was left off due to the depression. So, the bridge opened 8 months ahead of schedule and the Port Authority saved one million dollars in the process. I've crossed it many times by car and a few handfuls by foot and each time feels like the first time. It's just as much a treat as the Brooklyn Bridge! You've got fantastic views. Northward you'll be able to see the remainder of Manhattan and the Bronx, with Riverdale not too far in the distance. To the South is part of the Mid-Lower Manhattan Skyline. 'Though, don't count on being able to take pics of these features since there always seems to be a mist or haze? 'but they're always visible to the naked eye. Below the Bridge on the Manhattan side is Fort Washington Park. Within this park are great spots to view the Bridge alongside the Hudson River. There's also a light house at the very foot of the bridge. "Great Picture taking moments!" So bring your camera! 'But be sure you're ready for a hike should you choose to venture into this park since the exits and entrances to the park are greatly distanced off from one another. I would say I walked miles and miles and came across only a few exits. Maybe I didn't look hard enough? Nonetheless, It's yet another way to get a different perspective of this great bridge.
