Cable, George Washington Cable, George Washington, , American author, b. New Orleans. He is remembered primarily for his early sketches and novels of creole life, which established his reputation as an important local-color writer. Cable served as a Confederate soldier in the Civil War and afterward was a writer and reporter for the New Orleans Picayune. His short stories of New Orleans culture began to appear in Scribner's Monthly in 1873; they were collected and published as Old Creole Days (1879). Among his novels are The Grandissimes Madame Delphine Dr. Sevier (1884), and Gideon's Band (1914). Cable's works depict the picturesque life of creoles in antebellum Louisiana with charm and freshness. Discernible in some of them is the author's moral opposition to slavery and class distinction. After 1884, Cable lived in Northampton, Mass. His later works, notably the essays collected in The Silent South (1885) and The Negro Question (1890), reveal his concern with social evils, particularly with the betrayal of the freed African-American. See his letters, ed. by L. L. Leffingwell (1928, repr. 1967); biography by L. D. Rubin (1969); study by P. C. Butcher (1959).

Building The George Washington Bridge)
Work crews will feverishly make room for the new anchorages and approaches that will be installed.
A different crew will begin preparations for erecting the two towers.
Crane operators will clear the way for the tower foundations.
Skilled craftsmen will install steel bars in the anchorage pits to which the main bridge cables can be connected.
Finally these pits are filled with concrete.
The bridge towers rise from the water to stand guard over their new home.
Experienced Steelworkers will lay steel reinforcement ribs over the anchorage pits, providing a base over which the roadway and toll booths can be put into place.
The meticulous work of attaching one end of a footbridge cable to an anchorage, and send a barge across the Hudson River with the other end begins.
Bridge workers will connect the other end of the footbridge rope to the other anchorage, and hoist it to the top of the towers.
They will repeat this process until the cables for the footbridge are safely and securely in place.
Afterwards the work crews will affix the footbridge sections to the cables.

Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography, edited by James Grant Wilson and John Fiske. 6 vols. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1887-1889 was the "most-quoted" biographical source for 19th and early 20th America. Appleton's, due to its age, reflects the bias and prejudice of late 19th Century America. It is also estimated that 100 to 200 of the 35,000 biographies are entirely fictitious. Additionally, the OCR technology used to transfer the text to the web was, at best, only a 99% accurate. About the Artist
Chas Fagan is a portraitist, sculptor and a landscape painter. His only formal art training came at the age of ten when he was selected for a special series of lessons by the Hungarian portraitist Ilona Karolyi Szecheny. Otherwise, he studied the work of the great masters in European museums while growing up in Belgium. Mr. Fagan's prominence has grown through numerous exhibits, published paintings and public installations of his sculpture. However, it was further heightened when he became known as the artist who painted the complete

WAI Prime Weidlinger Associates is presently conducting a study incorporating dynamic computer modeling and wind tunnel studies using turbulent flow. Various schemes are being investigated for orthotropic deck installation, removal of stiffening truss and other enhancements, including the removal of the tuned mass damper. A prototype panel section is planned for installation to test design and constructibilitiy. Additional WAI Bronx-Whitestone Bridge Projects: 1998 - Bronx-Whitestone Bridge - Anchorage Eyebar Repair and Dehumidification - Anchorage eyebar repairs and eyebar chamber enclosure dehumidification (eyebar inspection, rehabilitation, dehumidification). In the first of two separate assignments, Weidlinger Associates inspected corrosion, evaluated the strength of the remaining cable/anchorage system, monitored deterioration and designed schematic repairs. For the second assignment, Weidlinger Associates is responsible for the investigation of alternate repair schemes, final design of a selected package for the eyebar repairs and cable chamber dehumidification system, preparation of contract documents, and design support services during construction. Weidlinger Associates is providing a system of girders and anchor rods to relieve loads from corroded eyebars.

WAI Prime Cracking of the orthotropic deck's connections to the secondary floorbeams was investigated, and remedial measures recommended. Cracking occurred in several details, and separate investigations were required at each. Simple global computer models were used to provide boundary loads to highly detailed local models of the cracked areas. The local models, when subjected to live loads and thermal gradients, showed certain of the failures were due to bolt prying, and others to traction forces. Still others were caused by welds and little fatigue resistance. Conclusions were confirmed by field instrumentation using strain gages, linear variable transformers (LVDT's) and thermisters (to measure thermal gradients); and recommendations were adopted and installed. In addition, Weidlinger Associates calculated the suspender dead load tensions from measurements of their natural frequencies and compared them with theoretical tensions, and determined rope fatigue risk due to wind induced vibration. In both cases, the "do nothing" alternative was recommended.

George Washington Cable
Chapter One
Masked Batteries
It was in the Theatre St. Philippe (they had laid a temporary floor over the parquette seats) in the city we now call New Orleans, in the month of September, and in the year 1803. Under twinkle of numberless candles, and in a perfumed air thrilled with the wailing ecstasy of violins, the little Creole capital's proudest and best were offering up the first cool night of the languidly departing summer to the divine Terpsichore. For summer there, bear in mind, is a loitering gossip, that only begins to talk of leaving when September rises to go. It was like hustling her out, it is true, to give a select bal masque at such a very early - such an amusingly early date; but it was fitting that something should be done for the sick and the destitute; and why not this? Everybody knows the Lord loveth a cheerful giver. And so, to repeat, it was in the Theatre St. Philippe (the oldest, the first one), and, as may have been noticed, in the year which the First Consul of France gave away Louisiana. Some might call it "sold." Old Agricola Fusilier in the rumbling pomp of his natural voice - for he had an hour ago forgotten that he was in mask and domino - called it "gave away." Not that he believed it had been done; for, look you, how could it be? The pretended treaty contained, for instance, no provision relative to the great family of Brahmin Mandarin Fusilier de Grandissime. It was evidently spurious.

http://www.nycroads.com/crossings/george-washington/
"The George Washington Bridge over the Hudson is the most beautiful bridge in the world. Made of cables and steel beams, it gleams in the sky like a reversed arch. It is blessed. It is the only seat of grace in the disordered city. It is painted an aluminum color and, between water and sky, you see nothing but the bent cord supported by two steel towers. When your car moves up the ramp, the two towers rise so high that it brings you happiness; their structure is so pure, so resolute, so regular that here, finally, steel architecture seems to laugh… The second tower is very far away; innumerable vertical cables, gleaming across the sky, are suspended from the magisterial curve that swings down and then up. The rose-colored towers of New York appear, a vision whose harshness is mitigated by distance." - Le Corbusier
IN THE PLANNING STAGES: As early as 1906, the governors of New York and New Jersey proposed a bridge over the Hudson River between 179th Street in Manhattan and Fort Lee. That year, the governors appointed an Interstate Bridge Commission for the purpose of constructing one or more trans-Hudson bridges at the joint expense of the two states. A 1910 report from the Commission recommended the Fort Lee location as follows:
