LORD BYRON
"Who would write who had anything better to do?" Birthplace

16 Holles St, London, England
Education
Aberdeen Grammar School; home tutors; Harrow; Trinity College, Cambridge, where he kept a bear as the more usual pets were sternly prohibited.
Other jobs
Sat in the House of Lords, where he championed liberalism.
Did you know? He created and published an Armenian dictionary. Critical verdict "Lord Byron is only great as a poet; as soon as he reflects, he is a child," noted Goethe; contemporary opinion located his charisma in the man more than the poetry, with readers of Childe Harolde desperate for the next instalment of "his" adventures. Virginia Woolf, "much impressed" by the "extreme badness" of his poetry, admitted he had "force". Eliot concurred that "he added nothing to the language... discovered nothing in the sounds, and developed nothing in the meaning." The opposing school sees him as a radical freedom fighter and exuberant poetic force.

Byron, George Gordon
Guide picks (1788-1824) British writer. George Gordon Noel Byron, 6th Baron Byron was one of the English "Romantics." His works include: "Don Juan," "Manfred," "Marino Faliero," "Sardanapalus," "The Two Foscari," and "Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage."
Artwork Related to Manfred

"Consider how features of these portraits of Byron reflect characteristics of the 'Byronic hero' persona created in Byron's poem 'Manfred.'" Astrocartography of Lord Byron's Least-aspected Mars
"The English poet Lord George Gordon Byron was born in London, precisely under the line of his Primary Transcendental, Mars. This location also falls within the narrowly focused tip of a Transcendental Midpoint-Field, extending from Byron's Primary Mars to his Secondary Transcendental, Pluto, which runs in a vertical, Midheaven position, west of Ireland." Byron "The adjectives that may be used to describe George Gordon, Lord Byron are as diverse as they are numerous: romantic, cynical, intelligent, humorous, amorous, adventurous, melodramatic, egotistical, charming, passionate, rebellious, witty, tempestuous, insatiable, impressive, and extraordinarily handsome."

6th Baron Byron, George Gordon (1835)
Jonathan Jones Saturday March 3, 2001 The Guardian
View the work online Artist: Thomas Phillips (1770 - 1845), a Royal Academician who specialised in portraits of the eminent of the day, including Michael Faraday and William Blake (whose intense expression Phillips is said to have elicited by asking him to recount his meetings with the Archangel Gabriel). Phillips painted Byron from life in March 1813, in the first flush of the poet's celebrity. The original is in the British Embassy in Athens; this version is the painter's own 1835 copy. Subject: George Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron (1788-1824), who in 1812 published the first two cantos of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, a poetic account of the travels around the Mediterranean shores by a jaded, over-sexed adventurer - it was considered a self-portrait. Byron instantly "woke to find himself famous". His life, including his incestuous relationship with his half-sister, his denunciation by Lady Caroline Lamb as "mad, bad and dangerous to know", and the heroism of his fighting alongside the Greeks in their war of independence, transfixed contemporaries. He cultivated his heroic (or anti-heroic) image in his writing: "Seek out - less often sought than found -/A soldier's grave, for thee the best;/Then look around, and choose thy ground/ And take thy rest" he counselled himself, in lines written at Missolonghi three months before his death from fever.

Poet England Born 22 Jan 1788

Byron's contemporary popularity was based first on 'Childe Harold' and the 'Tales', and then on 'Don Juan' (1819-24), his most sophisticated and accomplished writing. He was one of the strongest exemplars of the Romantic movement, and the Byronic hero was a prototype widely imitated in European and American literature.

    by Lord Byron, George Gordon (1788-1824)
    Tis time the heart should be unmoved,
    Since others it hath ceased to move:
    Yet, though I cannot be beloved,
    Still let me love! My days are in the yellow leaf;
    The flowers and fruits of love are gone;
    The worm, the canker, and the grief
    Are mine alone! The fire that on my bosom preys
    Is lone as some volcanic isle;
    No torch is kindled at its blaze
    A funeral pile. The hope, the fear, the jealous care, The exalted portion of the pain And power of love, I cannot share, But wear the chain. But 'tis not thusand 'tis not here Such thoughts should shake my soul nor now, Where glory decks the hero's bier, Or binds his brow. The sword, the banner, and the field

    Lord Byron
    P oeta inglés, uno de los escritores más versátiles e importantes del Romanticismo. Nació en Londres el 22 de enero de 1788 y estudió en el colegio de Harrow y la Universidad de Cambridge. En 1798, al morir su tío abuelo William, quinto barón Byron, heredó el título y las propiedades. Más adelante, en 1822, adoptó el nombre de Noel para recibir una herencia de su suegra. En 1807 se publicó su libro de poemas Horas de ocio ; una crítica adversa aparecida en el Edimburgh Review provocó su réplica en verso titulada Bardos ingleses y críticos escoceses (1809). En 1809 ocupó un escaño en la Cámara de los Lores y emprendió un viaje de dos años por España, Portugal y Grecia.
    La publicación en 1812 de los dos primeros cantos de Childe Harold , poema que narra sus viajes por Europa, le llevó a la fama. El héroe del poema, Childe Harold , fue el primer ejemplo de lo que llegaría a conocerse como el héroe byroniano: un joven de emociones tormentosas que rechaza la humanidad y vaga por la vida bajo el peso de un sentimiento de culpa causado por misteriosos pecados del pasado. Este héroe byroniano, inspirado en la vida y personalidad del autor, es el mismo estereotipo que se repetiría en sus poemas narrativos de los dos años siguientes, El infiel La novia de Abydos El corsario (1814) y Lara (1814). En 1815, año en que publicó

    Place of Death: Missolonghi, Greece George Gordon Byron, better known as Lord Byron (the sixth Baron Byron, if you're counting), was nothing if not the prototype of the conflicted Romantic hero. His persona has influenced artists, from Beat writers to rock stars (think of dark dandies like Jim Morrison and Trent Reznor), possibly more than his art itself. Byron's mother was considered coarse and frivolous by those who knew her, including her son. When the Scotswoman fell in love with Byron's father, everyone advised against marrying the penniless but titled widower. Stubbornly she held her ground and married him. Heavily in debt, he abandoned her. She gave birth to her son in London, naming him after her father. He was born with a club foot which he later attributed to her tight corsets. Byron was educated at Harrow School and the University of Cambridge. Some fifty years later Harrow would become infamous when stories of wild, homosexual rituals were revealed.

    Lord Byron
    Poet
    George Gordon, 6th Lord Byron, was the son of Captain John "Mad Jack" Byron (1756-91) and his second wife Catherine Gordon of Gight (d.1811) whom he married for her money (around GBP 25,000) in 1785 and whose fortune he promptly set about ravaging. The poet was born in London on 22nd January 1788. His parents' unhappy marriage (although it is doubtful if "Mad Jack" cared whether it was happy or not) was sufficiently spectacular to enter the ballad record of Scotland's north east: This youth is a rake, frae England is come,
    The Scots dinna ken his extraction ava;
    He keeps up his misses, his landlords he duns,
    That's fast drawn the lands o'Gight awa'.
    Catherine Gordon of Gight - north of Aberdeen in the valley of Ythan - could claim descent from King James I , although the poet was to be more exercised by his Byron progenitors. His grandfather was Admiral John Byron , known as "Foulweather Jack", whose brother, the 5th Lord (1722-98) also rejoiced a nickname - "The Wicked Lord". Had circumstances fallen out such that the poet inherited a Huntly or Gordon title then a less tormented attitude to his Scottishness could have been the result. However, it's a big "if only". Byron was a mere three-and-a-half when his prodigal father died, and six when through the death in action in Corsica of the direct heir to the Byron title, he became its heir presumptive. He attended Aberdeen Grammar School where he is remembered in GS Fraser 's Home town elegy ... Or I can make my town that homely fame

    Lord George Gordon Byron
    Biography
    He was born in London on January 22, 1788. His parents were Captain John "Mad Jack" Byron and Catherine Gordon. He was first educated at the Harrow School and then on to the University of Cambridge. In 1798, after the death of his great uncle William, the 5th Baron Byron, he took the title and the states that his uncle passed on to him. In 1808, Byron received a masters degree at Cambridge. In 1812, he received his first fame for his first two cantos of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage . In 1815, he married Anna Isabella Milbanke (1792-1860) and gave birth to a daughter, Ada (1815-1852). In 1816, after his wife separated him and society had ostracized him, he left England for good. He traveled to Geneva, Venice and finally settled in Pisa. In 1822, he started the journal The Liberal with poets Percy Bysshe Shelley and Leigh Hunt. By 1823, he had completed perhaps his greatest work in Don Juan . In 1823, on word of the Greek's revolt against Turkish rule, he joined the Greek insurance at Missolonghi. In January (1824), he was made commander in chief of their forces. Unfortunately, he became very sick and died three months later in Missolonghi.
