PREFACE
"Our meddling intellect misshapes the beauteous forms of things; we murder to dissect," Wordsworth cautioned at the dawning of a new age of science and technology. It is a caution that, in addition to applying to the study of art and nature, might also apply to our investigation of the creative process, which has engaged the meddling minds of many. Despite Wordsworth's skeptical view of intellectual analysis, the process involved in literary creation, in particular, has fascinated many ordinary people, as well as a great many psychologists and philosophers, from Plato on: we all want to know what makes people write and how they do it. Are poets crazy, "enthused" as Plato put it, a bit charmed, perhaps, of the Coleridgean variety, fed on honeydew, or are they, a la the contemporary poet William Stafford and other modern writers, such as those in Writing Fiction and Poetry , more or less ordinary people who happen to write?

Thursday, October 04, 2001 Printer friendly version Halloween is still a month away, but Kathryn Stripling Byer's poetry reading tonight at 7 in the Laurel Theater promises to be haunting. "I think she's witchy," poet Marilyn Kallet said. However, it's unlikely Byer will be flying in on a broomstick to recite verse over a bubbling cauldron. Kallet, who teaches creative writing at the University of Tennessee, means "witchy" in a "spiritual" sense, she said. "There is something very mysterious and spooky about her poems," Kallet said. "It's inspired poetry. Kathryn has heard these voices, they have spoken through her." Tonight's poetry reading is part of the English department's Visiting Writers Series 2001-2002 and is sponsored by the UT Creative Writing Program and the Knoxville Writers' Guild. Byer is the author of three award-winning books of poetry - Black Shawl Wildwood Flower (1992) and The Girl in the Midst of the Harvest Her poems have also appeared in various literary journals and anthologies, and her essays have been included in numerous books and journals.
