Vocabularies are crossing circles and loops. We are defined by the lines we choose to cross or be confined by. A.S. Byatt "To explain how reality is constructed does not imply that it is not real for the persons living it - or trivial, unimportant or ephemeral." Carol S. Vance
Sifting back and forth through the pages of the novel, pens and index cards handy, I found myself thinking of Roland with his red and green card boxes making notes on Ash's Vico. I am looking for meanings, looking for evidence to support my theories. What am I missing with this search for particulars? Possession speaks of narratives, the narratives we live within, their plots and unfoldings. What narratives do I inhabit and create (and overlook) in this search?

Byatt, A.S.
British writer and scholar, who gained worldwide recognition for her novel Possession (1990), which in 1990 won the Booker Prize, Great Britain's highest literary award.
She was born Antonia Susan Drabble in Sheffield, England, the oldest of four children. At the age of 13, she and her sister, British novelist Margaret Drabble, were sent to Mount School, a Quaker boarding school in York, England. Byatt then attended, on scholarship, Newnham College, University of Cambridge, and received her bachelor of arts degree in 1957. She worked toward her doctorate in 17th-century English literature at Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania (1957-1958), and at Somerville College, University of Oxford (1958-1959). She left Oxford in 1959 to marry Ian Byatt, a British economist. Their first child, Antonia, was born in 1960 and their second child, Charles, was born in 1961.
In 1964 Byatt began working as a part-time teacher of literature at the University of London and at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London. That same year she published her first work, Shadow of a Sun, a novel about a young woman attempting to escape the influence of her novelist father. In subsequent novels, Byatt similarly draws her characters from academic and artistic worlds, reflecting her own background.

- Tetszik a Matisse-képe - mondta neki, mikor elõször járt ott.

A.S. Byatt's Possession : A Critique of the Victorian Omission of Sexuality
Timothy Farrell '97 (English 168, 1996)
Like the narratives of Graham Swift and Peter Carey that function to subvert Victorian notions of progress and religion, A.S. Byatt's Possession: A Romance questions a dominant Victorian constructionfemale sexuality. Possession is a novel about a pair of young scholars who trace the correspondence between a well-known male Victorian poet and a lesser-known female poet. The novel is a patchwork of letters, poetry, and narrative. In her depiction of the Victorian past, Byatt recognizes Victorian culture's elision of all discourse surrounding sexuality. Byatt depicts Victorian marriagerepresented by the poet Randolph Ash and his wife Ellenin the same way a Victorian would have represented it, as evacuated of sexuality. Yet one of Byatt's projects in Possession is to valorize the sexual act itself. To accomplish this, she must look outside of Victorian culture to find a way of representing the sexual act. In her representation of Randolph Ash's marriage to Ellen, Byatt follows the Victorian tradition of displacing the sexual act from the marriage relationship. We learn that Ellen Ash marries Randolph after she has already lost her youth, implying that she has also lost her sexual attractiveness. She thinks back on her life, "A young girl of twenty-four should not be made to wait for marriage until she is thirty-six and her flowering is over" (499). Her memory of her wedding night reveals her terror over the sexual act.

It seemed such a simple idea: documentary maker Leanne Klein would follow AS Byatt as she wrote her new novel. But neither realised it would take nearly four fraught years to bring their collaboration to an end
    Monday March 10, 2003

It is December 1998 and I'm sitting in the living room of one of Britain's most important novelists, drinking champagne. But we're not celebrating. AS Byatt drinks champagne because other alcoholic drinks give her migraines. We've never met before and I am here to ask if she'll let me make a film about her. She is warm and friendly and very talkative. I'm amazed when she says she likes the idea of my project and wants to take part. Neither of us imagine that we are about to embark on a relationship that will continue for the next four years.

Portraits in words and portraits in paint are opposites, rather than metaphors for each other. This is A.S. Byatt's opening line, but what does she mean? Surely both are metaphors for the person depicted, aren't they? Surely both can be equally informative and equally imaginative, can they not? Apparently not. Byatt, as an artist with words, favours words over pictures and argues that they are better at presenting a person's character and presence. But one of my favourite portraits is of two young men and I know as much about them from this picture as any word portrait could tell me. I know that the elder is the more serious, proud of his position, ready to shoulder responsibility. And the younger, who has a pleasant, open face, makes me laugh. I can see how pleased with himself he is, how carefully he has done his hair, how much he loves his soft, kid boots. No words can quite capture the quality of that painting but the artist was inspired and that inspiration shines through and conveys something of the nature of his subjects. Words, too, can do this but in both cases it depends on the skill of the work's creator. Dull portraits are as common in literature as in art, inspired work is rare in both. Byatt, nevertheless, presents an interesting argument and illustrates it with examples of portraits in fiction and fictional writing about art from a wide range of work, including her own. Amongst the authors and artists she discusses are Proust, Ford Maddox Brown, Ford Maddox Ford, Oscar Wilde, Emile Zola, Joyce Carey, Iris Murdoch, Holbein, Durer, Monet and Manet. Rather spoiling her argument about the superiority of words, however, are the many beautiful reproductions of portraits which accompany the text and add to the attraction of the book.

Tuesday, February 4, 2003 I've stayed away from the net today. Spent some time reading the latest by A.S. Byatt: A Whistling Woman . It's the final book in her quartet, preceded by: A Virgin in the Garden Still Life , and Babel Tower . She also wrote the Booker Prize-winning Possession , recently made into a movie. And Angels and Insects , which was a movie some time back (Both books I've read, neither movie have I seen) I also went to hear her speak last Thursday night, in conversation with David Ulin. She has an astonishing capacity to blend narrative events with ideas. Narrative: this happened, she said this, she thought that. He said. He thought. Event twists, improbable surprisesand all the things that go into a story. But. She adds to it so many ideas: what's going on in science, literature, art, religion, groups, identity and twins? When I think of it in the abstract I wonder who could possibly describe an academic conference on mind and body and make it riveting? A. S. Byatt does. She does. Some snippets from last week's talk, from my notes:

    The Biographer's Tale " by A.S. Byatt 03 Jul. 2001 Bit Bit
I looked forward to opening up and reading A.S. Byatt's " The Biographer's Tale " – it was the first Byatt novel I had picked up since Possession , and I was turning to Byatt now for a similar refuge from the surrounding cultural vapidity and mediocrity. Bit
Byatt's protagonist, Phineas Nanson, read his first volumes of biography too quickly: "I do not pretend to have discovered even a quarter of the riches of that great book on that first gulping and greedy reading" (p.8). I was determined not to reproduce this error and allowed Byatt's words time to dissolve and enter the bloodstream. But I'm afraid that's all that was exchanged between the book and I: time. I did not warm to Phineas or any other character, and I began to wonder what it was these characters were wanting from my time. Bit
Nothing, it seemed. Unlike Possession , which captured the thrill of slow and gentle disclosure, The Biographer's Tale took me nowhere. It started a journey that petered out and it's final point seemed to be about pointlessness. Thanks a lot – this book just took up my precious few moments of postgraduate leisure time.
