Sharon Butala
Sharon Butala is one of Canada's most acclaimed authors. Her first short story collection, Queen of the Headaches, was shortlisted for a Governor General's Award in 1986. Her loosely-linked trilogy of novels, The Gates of the Sun, Luna, and The Fourth Archangel, form an evocative and highly praised portrait of prairie life. Her most recent short story collection, Fever, won the 1992 Authors Awards for Paperback Fiction. Her first non-fiction work, Perfection of the Morning, was nominated for a Governor General's Award and won the Saskatchewan non-Fiction Award and The Spirit of Saskatchewan Award in 1994. She lives with her husband, Peter, near Eastend, Saskatchewan.
Nominated for a Books in Canada First Novel Award when it was first published in 1984, Country of the Heart is the resonant story of Iris and Lannie, also the heroines of Sharon Butala's newest novel, The Garden of Eden.

ISBN 0006481582
$16.00 Canadian
Set in Butala's beautifully realized prairie landscape, Country of the Heart introduces 40-year-old Iris, seemingly happily married to Barney, a rancher-turned-farmer; Jake, a widower who, despite his age, still radiates the power and passion of the legendary cowboy he once was; and Lannie, Barney's niece, the troubled young woman who has lived with Barney and Iris since her own mother died.
A story of the transforming power of love and land as only Sharon Butala can tell, Country of the Heart is a welcome addition to the hugely successful Butala backlist, a novel - because of its link to The Garden of Eden - that will gain instant recognition with Butala's fans.

Butala's offer rejected
Columbia board refuses theater's former owner

By Kristen Garrett
Herald Staff Writer
Shenango Valley native and The Lettermen founder Tony Butala bought the Columbia Theatre in Sharon nearly 20 years ago and he said he's ready to buy it again. Butala said the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Museum in Sharon made an offer to buy the Columbia but the non-profit organization that owns the theater rejected it. Butala said he's "livid" over Columbia Theatre Inc.'s refusal of the Hall of Fame's offer of up to $10,000. And he is wondering why the offer was turned down. "It doesn't make sense," he said. Columbia Theatre Inc.'s board decided May 14 to auction off the former showplace in downtown Sharon. Pamela Voisey, executive director of the Columbia Theatre Inc., said the group was not expecting to make a profit on the sale of the building, and the buyer would have to pay off some "very minimal debt." In a May 21 letter, Bob Crosby, president and chief executive officer of the Vocal Group Hall of Fame Foundation which Butala founded and maintains control over made a formal offer and enclosed a down payment of $100 for the building. "Per our discussion, we are prepared to take over past debt not exceeding $10,000, as full payment for the deed, title and all assets," says the letter from Crosby to Board President Mitzi Kuster. The Hall of Fame also wants Columbia Theatre Inc. to give up its name and allow "Columbia Theatre to keep its name and identities," the letter says.

The story unfolds over two months, which is roughly the gestation period of a cat, and is told in a series of letters and portraits, written in the voices of some of the better-known personalities, most particularly Alice B. She bides her time by writing Gertrude letters in which she relates the stories of her feline life and the intricacies of graveyard living. She also records some of her favourite recipes, for delicacies such as "Ratrat Tartar" and the "Dove That Dares Not Speak Its Name."
