41. Halloween - Robert Burns' Poem About Halloween, And More!
A long poem by the great Scottish poet robert burns entitled Halloween offering glimpses of how the holiday was celebrated in rural Britain.
http://www.djmcadam.com/halloween.htm
Halloween
H alloween or, more correctly, Hallowe'en, celebrated on October 31st, marks the last day of the year on the ancient Celtic calendar, its night being the time when all witches and warlocks walked abroad and engaged in wicked revelry. With the coming of Christianity, the feast was transformed into the Eve of All Hallows, or All Saints. The following poem by Robert Burns is a good indication of how pre-Christian Halloween beliefs and traditions survived well into the Christian era.
HALLOWEEN
by Robert Burns Upon that night, when fairies light
On Cassilis Downans dance,
Or owre the lays, in splendid blaze,
On sprightly coursers prance;
Or for Colean the route is ta'en,
Beneath the moon's pale beams;
There, up the cove, to stray and rove,
Among the rocks and streams
To sport that night. Among the bonny winding banks,
Where Doon rins, wimplin' clear, Where Bruce ance ruled the martial ranks, And shook his Carrick spear, Some merry, friendly, country-folks, Together did convene, To burn their nits, and pou their stocks, And haud their Halloween Fu' blithe that night.

Life
The son of a hard-working and intelligent farmer, Burns was the oldest of seven children, all of whom had to help in the work on the farm. Although always hard pressed financially, the elder Burns, until his death in 1784, encouraged his sons with their education. As a result, Burns as a boy not only read the Scottish poetry of Ramsay and the collections compiled by Hailes and Herd, but also the works of Pope, Locke, and Shakespeare. By 1781, Burns had tried his hand at several agricultural jobs without success. Although he had begun writing, and his poems were circulated widely in manuscript, none were published until 1786. At this time he had already begun a life of dissipation, and he was not only discouraged but poor and was involved simultaneously with several women. Burns decided to marry Mary Campbell and migrate to Jamaica. To help finance the journey, he published at Kilmarnock

A poem with real atmosphere which is at times scary yet humorous. The use of the Scot's language enhances the effect and helps to evoke an accurate image of Scotland's rural scene which can often be "sombre and serene".

I hope this site welcomes newcomers and inspires the experts.
I also hope it creates a friendship across boundaries and frontiers. Most importantly I hope it perpepetuates the Memory of Robert Burns Robert Burns. In 1786 the Kilmarnock Volume hit the light of day and almost overnight Burns became the Scottish National Poet. All 612 copies sold out in just over a month. Prior to that he had recited his poems and circulated hand written copies to his friends and acquaintances. So much so, that he was well known in his native Ayrshire when he borrowed a pony and set out from his farm "Mossgiel" to Edinburgh. Burns wrote from the heart using the universal language of love, compassion and friendship. In his songs are mirrored our laughter and our tears. He gave Scots something to laugh about, something to cry about but most importantly something to be immensely proud about. He has given Scots an identity throughout the world. Burns memory is "Immortal."
