Cash or Culture?
Julie Burchill was inundated with replies to her Guardian column. One of the biggest debates in Brighton and Hove is whether public money should be spent on culture or voluntary sector groups - if indeed the former is being funded at the expense of the latter. Two of the chief protaganists, Guardian columnist and Brighton and Hove resident Julie Burchill and city council chief executive David Panter, put their views. I've always admired columnists who turn in a piece that's just made up of readers' responses to a previous outing because a) it makes you look like a "listening" sort of person and b) it means you don't have to do any work. But for most of my 25 years in journalism, this wasn't really an option, as there are only so many times you can reproduce such sentiments as DIE PAGAN HAG! in 1,000 words before the section editor wants a little word in your ear. But ever since I objected to Brighton New Labour Council's unusual policy of taking from the wretched to give to the rich in my Guardian column a couple of weeks ago in the worst example, Brighton Rape Crisis Centre, staffed solely by voluntary workers, had the whole of its modest £7,000 grant taken away, while the council continues to throw money at the likes of the Komedia and the Gardner Arts Centre my postbag overfloweth with correspondence that leaves me, frankly, still on the starting blocks when it comes to dry wit, passion and clear-sightedness.

Like most other sensible people, I genuflect at the altar of The Office. Indeed, a number of my female friends and I, all old enough to know better and rich enough not to care, have conceived the sort of hair-pulling, freeze-framing crush on Ricky Gervais which, shamefully, recently culminated in a multi-phone bitch-fest on the occasion of seeing a newspaper photograph of his attractive and successful girlfriend Jane, on a level more suited to a gang of 12-year-old Justin fans dissing Britney. I like everything about Ricky - his name, his accent, his amazingly beautiful Chinesey eyes, the way he made such a fool of Jonathan Ross - but of course what I like most about him is David Brent. But the thing is, I don't think I like David Brent in the way that everyone else does. I like him not because he makes me feel better about myself, but rather a) because I think I'm quite like him and b) I like it that way. In an ideal world, I'd hang out with David Brent but, as he's not real, at least I can hang out with myself, which is the next best thing. But sometimes I trip on how happy we could be...

The Guardian

There are some topics on which one is so out of step with prevailing liberal wisdom that it seems smarter never to mention those views, because a) they seem so obvious that one can barely stand to articulate or defend them without going cross-eyed with fury and frustration, and b) once you'd started, you'd spend every night and day arguing the toss as every do-gooding joker in Christendom lined up to take a poke. But since it's that reflective time of year, I'll run through the top three topics on which I seem at odds with 99% of my nearest and dearest, who in other ways don't seem to be the least bit blinkered liberals. First comes capital punishment - as obviously a Good Thing as wealth redistribution and Jarvis Cocker. Then comes state approval and taxation of prostitution - and if you really think that "sex work" is just like any other, imagine your own son or daughter (or mother, as most of them are) making a living out of being a human spittoon. Mmm, not such a valid, dignified lifestyle choice now, is it?

By Caroline Frost
BBC News profiles unit For more than 20 years, newspaper columnist Julie Burchill has been venting her journalistic spleen on all who cross her path. The opening of a new play sees the spotlight turned on herself. Julie Burchill's epithets have varied from the "Groucho Marx of feminism" to "the worst mother in Britain", from "important social commentator" to a "fat bird in a blue mac". One of Britain's most outspoken journalists, her bare-knuckle attitudes and reckless lifestyle have made her as reviled as she is successful. Burchill's ready sacrifice of compassion for wit make her newspaper columns horrifying but compulsive reading. Now these vitriolic outpourings have come to London's West End stage.
Why give a toss about my opinions?

Sci-fi awakening: Julie Burchill
For six years my boyfriend has been insisting that I read Valis by the dead American sci-fi writer Philip K Dick, often to the extent of packing it in my bag and removing other books. I finally got around to it last month in the Bahamas, and spent the entire week alternately babbling and weeping, but in a fun kind of way. To any women who don't think they can stand sci-fi, Dick's your man.
I also loved Out Of It by Stuart Walton, probably the most important book about drugs in 20 years, and Never Trust A Rabbit, a book of brilliant short stories by Jeremy Dyson from The League Of Gentlemen.

Responses to Julie Burchill
Sent to the Guardian Weekend: Much of Ms Burchill's article demands little refute. The question as to how transsexual people live can easily be resolved, simply by talking to the transsexual people who are in our communities, whether as neighbours, teachers, engineers, truck drivers etc. Anyone with their eyes open (and not in a drug induced state of chronic blindness like Ms Burchill) will discover that we live our lives in much the same ways, and with the same variety of styles as do the remainder of the population. Further, that Ms Burchill presumes that all transsexual people are male to female indicates how little she has bothered to read the newspaper she works for. My family and I have been featured on more than one occasion, as have my friends and colleagues who are also female to male, and who live their lives as men. The problem in this field of medicine is like that in all other fields, the post-code lottery that takes place and values some lives above others because of residence. That is what needs addressing. If anyone would really like to know about transsexual people, may I suggest they visit the Press For Change web site at

http://www.thedevilmag.co.uk/burchill.html
with Julie Burchill THE QUEEN of the Groucho now holds court in exile behind the bolted doors of the Sussex Arts Club in a Brighton back street, attended by a retinue of two - her best friend the barmaid and a Spanish waiter called Gus. The self-styled Dark Angel of Brighton seldom ventures out other than to shop or scatter £20 notes to the beggars. The Devil was led into an oak-panelled room where she emerged from the gloom in vivid red lipstick. After her recent Sapphic conversion, the Devil was not expecting a seduction. But from her wandering hands and frequently proffered snuff box, it was clear she was out to corrupt him. A number of images presented themselves. A diva whose audience has run away, the Wife of Bath sizing up husband number three, Britannia on the old penny. DEVIL: X Were you ever suspected of being a KGB agent? BURCHILL: X .My Dad and me got on the phone about it, we'd moan like two old married women, having to suffer these brutes. They'd never lived it. When my dad had cheered up a bit, he said 'Tell you what though, everything's going to happen now, drugs, crime, gangsters, I think we're well out of it basically. Over and out.' And he put the phone down. DEVIL: X Do you think punk's iconoclasm paved the way for Thatcherism?
