Celtic Inspired Fantasy and SF
Last updated 3/23/2003
How and Why did you create this Booklist?
I created this page because I've gotten so many questions about whether or not various books were based on specific myths, requests for "books like X," and inquiries about modern retellings of Celtic myth. This is not a complete list of Celtic-inspired SF and fantasy; it is very far from such a list. These are books that I've read and liked, an arbitrary and idiosyncratic selection of books that are either directly inspired by particular bits of Celtic myth and folklore, or that, while original, draw on Celtic traditions, myths, and lore. Many of these books are marketed as juvenile or "young adult" novels, but don't let that stop you from enjoying them.
Other Bibliographic Sources
, formerly known as Folk Tales, was a traditional newsletter for more than twenty-five years, before turning digital. Their site is a consistently high quality source about good music (Celtic and English traditional, and related traditions) and really good books. (Thanks to Jasmin for passing the URL to me.)

FINDER by Emma Bull
TOR, 1994 Orient has the talent to find things. Together with his Elf-partner, Tick-Tick, Orient uses his talent to stay out of trouble and to explore the borderlands created when the Elf-lands rejoined the human plane. When the police, in the person of attractive Detective Rico, ask for Orient's help tracking down a killer and a deadly drug, Orient wants to objectuntil Rico blackmailes him. Once he gets involved in the murder and drug case, Orient can't let it go. Someone has unleashed something deadly on the borderland between human and elf spheres. The police seem unable to cope, or could they even be involved? Orient's unique talent should help, but only if someone knows what he is looking for. Without that knowledge, he is helpless. Meanwhile, a killing plague spreads from drug-taking humans to true-blood elves. Orient's entire culture is threatened. Emma Bull ( see all BooksForABuck.com reviews of novels by this author ) has created a subtle mixture of action and character. The characters of Orient, Tick-Tick, and Rico are three-dimensional and damaged. The relationships and sexual tension between them apparent. The plague creates a ticking clock that increases the deadly pressure with each passing moment. Bordertown, torn between universes and where the science of neither plane really works, is virtually a character itself. Novels about the return of farie and the interaction between humans and elf have become an important subgenre. In this field, Bull is a master.

WAR FOR THE OAKS by Emma Bull
Ace Books, 1987 Eddi McCandry is a struggling musician who's just broken up with her band and her boyfriend when she runs into a stranger from the faerie Seelie Court. The eternal war between Seelie and Unseelie courts has flared into new life with new stakes. The immortals have agreed to throw their lives into the stakethe losers die for realand Eddi is a key to the magic. In the meantime, the stranger, a shape-changing phouka becomes her bodyguard. The Unseelie Court will do what it can to destroy her. THE WAR FOR THE OAKS describes the faerie battle for modern (obviously 1980s) Minneapolis and its consequences for mortals as well as immortals. Artists and musicians stand halfway between the realms, giving them power in both planes. By becoming the keystone to the magic of mortality, and through the strength of her music, Eddi becomes a minor power in faerie. Yet her survival depends on her achieving much more. Although the Unseelie Court is certainly evil, the Seelie Court is far from perfect. Within its armies, discord and treason emerge. Indeed, even Eddi's phouka has an agenda of his ownan agenda that threatens the power of the court and Eddi's future.

The stories of Megan in the 4 Liavek books are about the same person:

I like the covers very much and therefore I gave them a separate page.

A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper
The story is set in England of the mid-nineteenth century. Although several reviews have hinted that this is some sort of alternate history, it really seems at most a secret history, if that. Yes, there are real historical figures interacting with the main (fictional) characters, but that does not an alternate history make. So in this historical England, we discover that James Cobham, whom his family thought drowned in fact, saw drownedis in fact alive, though without any memory of what has happened in the months between his "death" and his re-appearance. Though he doesn't actually re-appear in a flourish, but only in secret and to his closest friends. In addition to trying to solve the mystery of James's absence, and avoid a more permanent demise, the characters also discuss Kant and Hegel and the British class system. One might ask at this point why this book is being promoted a s science fiction (or perhaps more accurately, fantasy). The answer is- -I don't know. It seems more because Brust and Bull are known as SF authors than because of any inherent SF aspect to the novel. (I suppose that in itself may constitute a bit of a spoiler.) There are certainly goings on that have fantastical origins, meanings, or referents, but they are (so far as one can tell) completely mundane in actuality. And while there were aspects of the plot that held my interest, the resolution is too pat, too dependent on people acting in seemingly irrational ways, too dependent on people *depending* on people acting in irrational ways. Or, strangely enough, on people acting rationally when one would expect them to act irrationally.

70. Freedom & Necessity - Steven Brust & Emma Bull [review © T. Brown 1997]

Freedom And Necessity
Steven Brust and Emma Bull
Tor, 1997
What manner of thing is this ? Is it a historical novel? a fantasy novel? Or what? Well, some would say that any novel springing from a collaboration between Steven Brust ( the Taltos series, The Phoenix Guards etc) and Emma Bull ( Falcon, The War for the Oaks, Bone Dance, assorted Borderlands stuff) must be fantasy. I suspect it would be differently categorised if it had been written by other hands. "Have with you, at all times, iron that cuts, polished silver (a coin will not do), a sprig of mistletoe, and a loaded pistol." OK, how do we define fantasy? There are no magical beasties: no elves (there is a beautiful, mysterious, dangerous woman who travels around in a mysterious coach, but she's more nymph than elf); no goblins (there is one chap who is described as ‘inhumanly ugly’ early in the novel, but the next person to see him simply regards him as deformed). There are episodes which might be regarded as magical (I shall leave Kitty’s assorted visions, opium-driven and otherwise, out of this: dreams and visions are too commonplace to be of much use in classification). The bits where there might be magic, however, are reported with a refreshingly Enlightenment sensibility – "it was probably just the reflection of the fire", etc. James and Susan, at least, cling firmly to their Rationalist tendencies, and are far happier reforming the world over sherry with Engels than participating in obscure pagan rituals. … Oh yes, there

War for the Oaks, Emma Bull
Yikes. The nice folks at Borderlands recommended this for Allison when i was there a few weeks ago. I picked it up, and read it all. Today. The truly funny part is that i was looking for books for both Daniel and Allison; while Allison will like this (i think), i'm certain it will push at least several of Daniel's big buttons. A really good read. In a nutshell, the story revolves around a chick who plays rhythm guitar in a band in Minneapolis, and gets caught up as the not-so-token mortal in a faerie war. Had i read this in high school, i would have become obsessed with the world Emma Bull paints. Highly recommended.

Name: Emma
Age: One year old
Gender: Female Breed: Pit Bull Home: Oakland, California, USA
E mma is quite an ambassador of her much misunderstood breed. She was rescued from the pound at three months. and is so loving and sweet. She lives with another rescued Rott/Shepherd mix and an old cat. Although the media likes to make horrible headlines about vicious pit bulls, many are like her with responsible owners. She is a great retriever and swimmer and likes to please. Emma isn't much of a watchdog because she loves people so much, even strangers. Her favorite pass times are teasing other dogs with her toys and bones, diving in the bay, and destroying anything stuffed with foam. Her mom was so pleased that she is finally a year old, she threw her a birthday party. Birthday cake is the only thing Emma has ever attacked and the most dangerous thing about her is her strong, whipcord of a tail. Ouch!
