Bulgakov, Mikhail Afanasyevich 1891-1940, Russian novelist and playwright. He wrote satirical stories ( The Deviliad, 1925, tr. 1972) and comedies ( Zoe's Apartment, 1926) and the long novel The White Guard (1925, tr. 1971), in which a Kievan family hostile to the revolution is sympathetically and realistically portrayed. He condensed and dramatized this as The Days of the Turbines (1926, tr. 1934). The satirical novel The Master and Margarita (tr. 1967), which he worked on intermittently from 1928 until his death, is considered his most important work. His other novels include The Heart of a Dog (1925, tr. 1968). Bulgakov was officially criticized for several of his works. See The Early Plays of Mikhail Bulgakov: 1926-1936 (tr. 1972) and the study by A. C. Wright (1978).

Mikhail Afanasievich Bulgakov was born in 1891 in Kiev, today the capital of Ukraine. His father was a professor at the Theological Academy. After finishing high school, Bulgakov entered the Medical School of Kiev University, graduating in 1916. In 1913 he married Tatyana Lappa, who moved with him after graduation to provincial villages, where he practiced medicine. He wrote about his experiences as a doctor in his early works "Notes on Cuffs" and "Notes of a Young Country Doctor." Bulgakov in the University Bulgakov's first wife

Bulgakov's brothers enlisted in the White Army and fled with them, eventually landing in Paris. Bulgakov enlisted as a field doctor with the White Army and ended up in the Caucasus, where he gave up medicine and began working as a journalist. He never left Russia, and was never granted a visa to visit his brothers.

    The Master and Margarita
    Mikhail Bulgakov
    Trnalsated by Michael Glenny
    Review date: 10/2/2002
    Publisher: Everyman, 1992
Published: 1966, translation 1967 The approval of the authorities was a major issue for artists in the former Soviet Union, particularly during the rule of Stalin. Shostakovitch, for example, managed to keep from being banned or imprisoned despite occasional condemnation, mainly by keeping his most private thoughts for chamber music which tended not to attract the attention of the censor to such an extent (and I suspect also because of his high profile in the West). Bulgakov was not so lucky, though he at least escaped the gulag. Successful in the early twenties, he was unable to publish anything between 1927 and his death in 1940. Much of the last seven years of this period was spent working on what proved to be his masterpiece, The Master and Margarita . A censored version was finally published in 12966, and the full text only appeared in 1973. It is obvious why the novel was unpublishable under Stalin's regime; in fact, it reads as though Bulgakov was trying to write something which would offend the authorities as much as possible. The novel adds up to a concentrated satirical attack on the Soviet state, making fun of bodies like the Union of Soviet Writers and even of the way people disappeared into the gulags and associated institutions such as mental hospitals. There is a fantastical supernatural side, as the devil visits Moscow and holds a magic show in a theatre, and everything is in some way linked to the execution of Jesus by the Romans; both of these were themes unlikely to gain approval in militantly athiest Soviet Russia. (Bulgakov indicates this ironically when he shows the authorities' reaction to a novel written by one of the characters about the execution.)

      PREFACE
Mikhail Bulgakov in the Western World (A Bibliography) reflects the holdings of the Library of Congress - books, pamphlets, and microforms - by and about Bulgakov. Because many of these works are unknown in Bulgakov's native land, the European Division of the Library of Congress has compiled the present bibliography of selected works from the West with the intention of reaching a wide range of readers, librarians and researchers in the former Soviet Union and the West. The bibliography includes some translations that are not held by the Library of Congress because of collection policies concerning translations with languages other then English. This bibliography attempts to depict the wide spectrum of interest by researchers in Bulgakov's role in the world - not only his influence on his contemporaries but his continuing influence. It is intended for researchers, librarians, bibliographers, bibliophiles, and for all those interested in the intellectual and spiritual heritage of the Russian and Ukrainian nations. The material in the index is divided into six chapters. In the chapter

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Mihail Bulgakov (1891-1940) Russian journalist, playwright, novelist, and short story writer, whose major work was the Gogolesque fantasy The Master and Margarita . In the story the Devil visits Stalinist Moscow to see if he can do some good. The book is considered a major Russian novel of the 20th century. It first appeared in savagely censored form in the Soviet journal Moskva in 1966-67. Bulgakov also used satire and fantasy in his other works, among them the short story collection Diaboliad The naked man pushed his way to the front, tapped with his nail on the bronze bonnet and said:
"Here, comrades, we have a remarkable character. A notorious harlot of the first half of the 19th century.. ."
The lady with the stomach turned purple, took her young daughter by the hand and quickly drew her away.

(from 'The Fire of the Khans') Mihail Bulgakov was born in Kiev. Ukraine as the eldest son of a theology professor at the Kiev Theological Academy. He attended First Kiev High School (1900-09) and studied then medicine at Kiev University (1909-16). From 1916 to 1918 he served as a doctor in front-line and district hospitals. These experiences he described in notes of a young doctor, 'Zapiski yunogo vracha' (1925-26). In 1918-19 Bulgakov worked as a doctor in Kiev, and witnessed the German occupation and then the occupation by the Red Army. During these war years he suffered from a morphine addiction, but was helped by his first wife to win the addiction. In 1920 Bulgakov abandoned medicine in favor of a career as a writer. He organized in Vladikavkaz, Caucasus, a 'sub-department of the arts', wrote stories for newspapers and moved to Moskow in 1921. There he worked for the literary department of the People's Commissariat of Education, writing as a journalist for various groups and papers. His largely autobiographical novel BELAYA GVARDIYA (1925, full text 1966, The White Guard) was an account of the turbulent years between 1914 and 1921 as reflected in the lives of a White family in the Ukraine. Two parts of the work was published in the journal

The snow storm from the north howled and howled, and now they themselves could sense a dull, subterranean rumbling, the groaning of an anguished land in travail. As 1918 drew to an end, the threat of danger grew rapidly nearer. CHAPTER ONE.
In May of 1918, in Kiev, the matriarch of the Turbin family died, leaving behind her children: Aleksei , 28, a doctor just returned from the war; Elena , 24; and Nikolka , 17 and a half. Their mother's death was a hard blow for the family, which had just been reunited and expected a return to some sort of normalcy. Now it was December. Snow is piling up, and life is getting worse.
    CHAPTER TWO.
A cold, snowy night. Aleksei and Nikolka go to the yard and discover that someone has been stealing firewood from their shed. They retire indoors, where their stove, faced with Dutch tiles telling the story of Peter the Great , keeps the apartment warm and comfortable . Nikolka has scribbled pro-tsarist graffitti on the stove.

This was also the year he began writing. He recalls: "Once in 1919 when I was traveling at night by train I wrote a short story. In the town where the train stopped, I took the story to the publisher of the newspaper, who published the story." He settled in Vladikavkaz and undertook journalistic work. MIKHAIL BULGAKOV: I AM A SATIRIST
One of Russia’s most mystic writers, Mikhail Bulgakov, was born May 15, 1891. This writer came to the Russian culture in the 20s of the previous century, a very contradictory period. It was a period of a new economic policy, when renovation destroyed the habitual. Literature was experiencing changes as well. Private publishing houses appeared, new books and magazines were issued, cultural societies were revived, and people organized disputes on cultural problems. Great poets such as Alexander Blok, Sergei Yesenin, Nikolay Gumilev, Anna Akhmatova were still published at that time. Publication of pre-revolution magazines was resumed. A new magazine, Novaya Rossia (New Russia) appeared, the first edition without any party afilliation; it proclaimed desire of Russian cultural intellectuals was to cooperate with the Soviet power.
The life of Mikhail Bulgakov began in Kiev among his loving and friendly family and his mother, whom he called “a fair queen." He studied at the medical faculty, then had a medical practice in a small remote village. It was an uneasy and awful period in the life of Russia. Then there was Kiev again. And then was Vladikavkaz, where Bulgakov suffered from typhus and gave up a trip to Constantinople. This was the very place where the career of Mikhail Bulgakov as a doctor finished, and his career as a writer started. Bulgakov wrote many of his most popular plays at beginning of the 20s.
