Biography
Scottish diplomat, barrister, journalist, historian, poet, and novelist, whose most famous thriller was The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915), his 27th book. Buchan's 100 works include nearly 30 novels and seven collections of short stories. John Buchan was born in Peebles-Shire in Scotland as the eldest son of Rev. John Buchan. He studied at the University of Glasgow and Brasenose College, Oxford, where he had an outstanding career, winning the Stanhope Essay Prize in 1897 and the Newdigate Prize in the following year. In 1901 he became a barrister of the Middle Temple and a private secretary to the High Commissioner for South Africa, Lord Milner (1901-03). This post opened for Buchan the doors of the inner circle of bright young men, who made career in the higher levels of civil service. In 1903 Buchan started to work for the publisher Thomas Nelson and Sons, revitalishing publication of pocket editions of great literature and virtually editing

He was a classicist at Oxford, read for the Bar but did not practice as a barrister, was a government administrator in South Africa after the end of the Boer War, was editor of The Spectator and war correspondent for The Times , was Member of Parliament for the Scottish Universities, a Director of Reuters, a director of Thomas Nelson's, the publishing house, and was His Majesty's High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, twice. He married into the minor aristocracy, had four children and was made a Baron (lowest rung of the British hereditary peerage) on receiving the appointment of Governor-General of Canada in 1935. He was very popular in his Canadian service, travelling all over the country to meet the people and see the land, Arctic to US border, east to west, and made important political links with President Roosevelt of the United States. He died of a brain haemorrhage while shaving, shortly after signing Canada's entry into the Second World War. And he wrote. By golly did he write. The list of known, published books is well over a hundred in number, and only about 40 of these are fiction. He is most famous for

BY THE SAME AUTHOR. Crown 8vo. 1s. net. Cloth boards, with wrapper in three colours. THE THIRTY=NINE STEPS. Sir William Robertson Nicoll, writing in the 'British Weekly.' An Officer at the Front writes: "The 'shocker' arrived just before dinner-time, and though, with our early rising, sleep is very precious to us, I lay awake in my dug-out till I had finished the last page. This, I take it, is the supreme test of a 'shocker': one should never be able to lay it down. It is just the kind of fiction for here. Long novels I cannot manage in the trenches. One wants some- thing to engross the attention without tiring the mind, in doses not too large to be assimi- lated in very brief intervals of spare time. "The story is greatly appreciated in the midst of mud and rain and shells, and all that could make trench life depressing." TO
MAJOR-GENERAL
S IR FRANCIS LLOYD K.C.B.
