And so it was with his latest book, Down Under. The book starts with Bill’s lament that he can never remember the name of Australia’s Prime Minister, and how guilty he feels about this. Well don’t feel guilty Mr. Bryson, I’m sure you know that more Australians are able to name the first American president than are able to name the first Australian Prime Minister. Australians are, after all, care more about enjoying life and being the best sporting nation in the world than they care about petty politics. This was made clear in the second paragraph of the book, where we learn that in 1967, the then Prime Minister Harold Holt, was strolling along a beach in Victoria when he plunged into the surf and vanished. No trace of him was ever seen again. Imagine that! In any other country, you’d have conspiracy theories up to today that he was captured by the CIA, abducted by aliens, sighted at Burger King (or Hungry Jack’s if you’re in Australia) or some other explanation. In Australia, they probably read the newspaper headline, said “Oh, poor man!”, and went on to check the Aussie rules football scores.
