Born: November 3, 1794, in Cummington, Massachusetts, United States Died: June 12, 1878, in New York City, New York, United States William Cullen Bryant was an American poet whose works were often based on themes of nature. In his poetry, Bryant often used nature to represent God. He felt that, as a poet, he was obliged to improve the moral values of his readers, and consequently his work is frequently criticized for its pedantic, moralistic tone. Bryant's father was Peter Bryant, a physician, and his mother was Sarah Snell Bryant. The family lived in the house of the Snell grandparents. Bryant grew up with the diametrically opposed views of his Unitarian father, a member of the state legislature, and his grandfather, a stern Calvinist farmer and a deacon of the local church. His parents tutored him in Greek and Latin at an early age, and he spent many hours absorbed in books from his father's library. When he was only thirteen years old, Bryant published his first work

B Born: November 3, 1794, Cummington, Massachusetts. Died: June 12, 1878, Long Island, New York. Bryant died from a fall after giving a speech in Central Park, New York City. Buried: Roslyn Cemetery, near Port Washington, New York.
The following sonnet was written for Thomas Cole by Bryant and presented to Cole prior to his first trip to Europe:
To an American Painter Departing for Europe
Thine eyes shall see the light of distant skies: Yet, Cole! thy heart shall bear to Europe's strand A living image of thy native land, Such as on thy own glorious canvass lies. Lone lakessavannahs where the bison roves Rocks rich with summer garlandssolemn streams Skies, where the desert eagle wheels and screams Spring bloom and autumn blaze of boundless groves Fair scenes shall greet thee where thou goestfair, But differentevery where the trace of men, Paths, homes, graves, ruins, from the lowest glen To where life shrinks from the fierce Alpine air. Gaze on them, till the tears shall dim thy sight, But keep that earlier, wilder image bright.

Thanatopsis
by William Cullen Bryant
To him who in the love of nature holds
Communion with her visible forms, she speaks
A various language; for his gayer hours
She has a voice of gladness, and a smile
And eloquence of beauty; and she glides
Into his darker musings, with a mild
And healing sympathy that steals away
Their sharpness ere he is aware. When thoughts
Of the last bitter hour come like a blight
Over thy spirit, and sad images
Of the stern agony, and shroud, and pall, And breathless darkness, and the narrow house, Make thee to shudder, and grow sick at heart; Go forth, under the open sky, and list To Nature's teachings, while from all around Earth and her waters, and the depths of air Comes a still voice. Yet a few days, and thee The all-beholding sun shall see no more In all his course; nor yet in the cold ground, Where thy pale form was laid, with many tears, Nor in the embrace of ocean, shall exist Thy image. Earth, that nourished thee, shall claim Thy growth, to be resolved to earth again, And, lost each human trace, surrendering up Thine individual being, shalt thou go

The Tides
By William Cullen Bryant
The moon is at her full, and, riding high,
Floods the calm fields with light;
The airs that hover in the summer-sky
Are all asleep to-night. There comes no voice from the great woodlands round
That murmured all the day; Beneath the shadow of their boughs the ground Is not more still than they. - But ever heaves and moans the restless Deep; His rising tides I hear, Afar I see the glimmering billows leap; I see them breaking near. Each wave springs upward, climbing toward the fair Pure light that sits on high- Springs eagerly, and faintly sinks, to where The mother-waters lie.

AMERICAN LITERATURE I, 11213
Timothy E. Trask, Professor Eight Poems by
William Cullen Bryant To a Waterfowl

(This poem was composed in Bridgewaternow BrocktonMassachusetts) Whither, midst falling dew,
While glow the heavens with the last steps of day Far, through their rosy depths, dost thou pursue Thy solitary way? Vainly the fowler's eye Might mark thy distant flight to do thee wrong As, darkly seen against the crimson sky, Thy figure floats along. Seek'st thou the plashy brink Of weedy lake, or marge of river wide, Or where the rocking billows rise and sing On the chafed ocean side? There is a Power whose care Teaches thy way along that pathless coast The desert and illimitable air Lone wandering, but not lost. All day thy wings have fanned, At that far height, the cold, thin atmosphere

72. On The Life Of Thomas Cole - William Cullen Bryant
By william cullen bryant. The above text was taken from Orations And Addressesby william cullen bryant , published 1873 by GP Putnam's Sons, New York.

On the life of Thomas Cole
A funeral oration delivered before the National Academy of Design, New York, May 4, 1848 By William Cullen Bryant GENTLEMEN OF THE ACADEMY: Kindred Spirits by Asher B. Durand
Let me ask those who hear me to accompany me in a brief review of his life and his principal works. Thomas Cole was born in the year 1802, at Bolton, in Lancashire, England. He came to this country with his family when sixteen years of age. He regarded himself, however , as an American, and claimed the United States as the country of his relatives. His father passed his youth here, and his grandfather, I have heard him say, lived the greater part of his life in the United States. Two of the pictures of which I am speaking are in the exhibition opened for the benefit of his family since his death. They are not equal to his later works, but they arc skilful, faithful and original, and these qualities, once pointed out, made them the subject of general admiration. in one of the earlier editions of his poem entitled The Vanity of Human Wishes, Johnson thus enumerates the calamities incident to the life of a scholar :
Toil, envy, want, the garret and the jail.

The Yellow Violet
William Cullen Bryant
Previously from The Violet Gazette, Autumn, 2000, V1-4, P6 When beechen buds begin to swell,
And woods the blue-bird's warble know,
The yellow violet's modest bell
Peeps from the last year's leaves below. Ere russet field their green resume,
Sweet flower, I love, in forest bare,
To meet thee, when thy faint perfume
Alone is in the virgin air. Of all her train, the hands of Spring First plant thee in the snowy mould, And I have seen thee blossoming Beside the snow-bank's edges cold. Thy parent sun, who bade thee view, Pale skies, and chilling moisture sip, Has bathed thee in his own bright hue, And streaked with jet thy glowing lip.

Bryant served as the New York Homeopathic Medical College's first president and held the office of present of the Board of Trustees for 10 years. Poet and editor of the Evening Post. Biography of William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) New York Medical College owes its founding in 1860 to the vision of a group of civic leaders in New York City who believed that medicine should be practiced with greater sensitivity to the patients. The group, led by William Cullen Bryant, was particularly concerned with the condition of hospitals and medical education. Bryant was zealously devoted to the branch of medicine known as homeopathy, which, among its tenets, advocated moderation in medicinal dosage, exercise, a good diet, fresh air and rest in treating illness. The school opened as the New York Homeopathic Medical College. William Cullen Bryant was president of the New York Homeopathic Society.
