From Samuel Austin Allibone, A Critical Dictionary of English Literature and British and American Authors , (Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1900): Bryant, William Cullen
One of the most eminent of American poets, was born at Cummington, Massachusetts, November 3, 1797. At the early age of ten years he published translations from some of the Latin poets, and when only thirteen, wrote The Embargo , a political satire, which was printed in Boston in 1808. This remarkable effusion of precocious genius was so successful that a new edition was called for in a few months. At Williams College the youthful poet distinquished himself by his devotion to the classics and other departments of learning. He left college in 1812, was admitted to the Bar in 1815, and commenced practice in the village of Great Barrington, where he soon after married. His celebrated poem of Thanatopsis , was written when between 18 and 19 years of age, and appeared in the North American Review for 1816. His longest poem, The Ages , a survey of the experience of mankind, was delivered before the Phi Beta Kappa Society of Harvard College in 1821. It was published with some other poems at Cambridge in 1821. His well-known poem

    Bryant, William Cullen
    (b. Nov. 3, 1794, Cummington, Mass., U.S.d. June 12, 1878, New York City), poet of nature, best remembered for " Thanatopsis ," and editor for 50 years of the New York Evening Post A descendant of early Puritan immigrants, Bryant at 16 entered the sophomore class of Williams College. Because of finances and in hopes of attending Yale, he withdrew without graduating. Unable to enter Yale, he studied law under private guidance at Worthington and at Bridgewater and at 21 was admitted to the bar. He spent nearly 10 years in Plainfield and at Great Barrington as an attorney, a calling for which he held a lifelong aversion. At 26 Bryant married Frances Fairchild, with whom he was happy until her death nearly half a century later. In 1825 he moved to New York City to become coeditor of the New York Review . He became an editor of the Evening Post in 1827; in 1829 he became editor in chief and part owner and continued in this position until his death. His careful investment of his income made Bryant wealthy. He was an active patron of the arts and letters. The religious conservatism imposed on Bryant in childhood found expression in pious doggerel; the political conservatism of his father stimulated

Collections of Bryant's poems began to appear as early as 1821, and they continued to appear during the rest of his life, the last one in 1876. His critical reputation has, for the most part, fallen on evil days, as has that of his fellows among the 'Good gray poets' of 19th century New England. William Cullen Bryant
The early poetical exercises of William Cullen Bryant,, like those of all young poets, were colored by the books he read. Among these were the works of Pope, and, no doubt, the works of Cowper and Thomson. The latter, if they were in the library of Dr. Bryant, do not appear to have impressed his son at this time; nor, indeed, does any English poet except Pope, so far as we can judge from his contributions to the "Hampshire Gazette." They were bookish and patriotic: one, written at Cummington, 8 January, 1810, being "The Genius of Columbia"; and another, "An Ode for the Fourth of July, 1812," to the tune of "Ye Gentlemen of England." These productions are undeniably clever, but they are not characteristic of their writer, nor of the nature that surrounded his birthplace, with which he was familiar, and of which he was a close observer.

    BRYANT, William Cullen
Born: November 3, 1794, in Cummington, Massachusetts, United States Died: June 12, 1878, in New York City, New York, United States William Cullen Bryant was an American poet whose works were often based on themes of nature. In his poetry, Bryant often used nature to represent God. He felt that, as a poet, he was obliged to improve the moral values of his readers, and consequently his work is frequently criticized for its pedantic, moralistic tone. Bryant's father was Peter Bryant, a physician, and his mother was Sarah Snell Bryant. The family lived in the house of the Snell grandparents. Bryant grew up with the diametrically opposed views of his Unitarian father, a member of the state legislature, and his grandfather, a stern Calvinist farmer and a deacon of the local church. His parents tutored him in Greek and Latin at an early age, and he spent many hours absorbed in books from his father's library. When he was only thirteen years old, Bryant published his first work, The Embargo , which attacked President Jefferson and called for his resignation.

An Indian At The Burial Place Of His Fathers
    My father's ancient burial-place,
Ere from these vales, ashamed and weak,
    Withdrew our wasted race.
Of which our old traditions tell.
For here the upland bank sends out
    A ridge toward the river-side;
I know the shaggy hills about,
    The meadows smooth and wide,
The plains, that, toward the southern sky,
Fenced east and west by mountains lie.
A white man, gazing on the scene,
Would say a lovely spot was here,
And praise the lawns, so fresh and green,
    Between the hills so sheer.
Lay in its tall old groves again.
The sheep are on the slopes around,
The cattle in the meadows feed,
And laborers turn the crumbling ground,
    Or drop the yellow seed,
And prancing steeds, in trappings gay,
Whirl the bright chariot o'er the way.
Methinks it were a nobler sight
To see these vales in woods arrayed,
Their summits in the golden light,
    Their trunks in grateful shade,
And herds of deer that bounding go
O'er hills and prostrate trees below.
And then to mark the lord of all,
The forest hero, trained to wars

The right to discuss freely and openly, by speech, by the press, by the pen, all political questions, and to examine and animadvert upon all political institutions . . . is a right as clear and certain, so interwoven with our other liberties, so necessary in fact, to their existence that without it we must fall at once into despotism and anarchy. Biography of William Cullen Bryant
WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT was born at Cummington, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, November 3, 1794, and, after an unusually long and active literary life, he died in New York, June 12, 1878.
His father was Peter Bryant, a physician of considerable literary culture, and a person who had traveled quite extensively. The father took an unusual interest in the culture of his children, and he was amply rewarded for all his pains. There is an unauthenticated tradition that the first Bryant of whom there is any account in America, came over in the Mayflower. Mr. Stephen Bryant came over from England, and was settled at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1836. Stephen's son Ichabod was the father of Philip Bryant and Philip, of Peter, the father of William Cullen.
Bryant's mother was Miss Sarah Snell, of Mayflower stock, being a descendant of John Alden. Thus our poet has an honorable and cultured ancestry. Strict Puritanical discipline was the order of the day, hence the young poet's life did not fall in pleasant places, so far as recreations were concerned. While the children were held with a steady hand, their educational and moral interests were considered with conscientious earnestness.
