Even outside of government, Bryan made his voice heard.
William Jennings Bryan Supported Many Causes
After William Jennings Bryan resigned as President Wilson's secretary of state, he resumed his place as one of the most important members of the Democratic Party. He strongly advocated women's suffrage (women's right to vote). His efforts, as well as others, led to the passage of the 19th Amendment, which guaranteed women a vote in elections. Do you know when women finally got this right?

W illiam J ennings B ryan (1860-1925) As a young man, William Jennings Bryan "looked into evolution," and finding it wanting, "resolved to have nothing to do with it." But he would have a lot to do with it. Bryan became the nation's most prominent figure in the fundamentalist crusade against the theory of evolution. In Chautauqua addresses and published writing,, Bryan attacked what he called "ape-ism." At a Baptist Convention, Bryan offered this criticism of evolution: When I want to read fiction, I don't turn to the Arabian Nights ; I turn to works of biologyI like my fiction wild. Scientists make a guess and call it a hypothesis. "Guess" is too short a word for a professor. A University of Chicago professor said the greatest day in the world was when a water puppy crawled out on land and decided to stay. The water puppy, he said, went on to become a man. If he proves that, I am willing to give up Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year's Day, and to celebrate Water Puppy Day. Geological evidence tending to support the theory was often dismissed by Bryan with the remark, "The Rock of Ages is more important than the age of rocks." Bryan offered $100 in cash to anyone who signed an affidavit declaring that he personally was descended from an ape. Bryan contended that teachers of evolutions should be driven out of public universities: The Christian Church should not permit any man to be employed in a college or university or remain there who opposes the Christian religion....There are professors in State universities who have taken away our Lord from our young men and have taught a doctrine that undermines Christianity. The Christian Church should demand that no man paid by public taxation shall be allowed to assault the truth of our great Scriptures. I believe one of the reasons so many do not get a higher education is the fear of their parents that they will lose more morally than they will receive mentally.

He practiced law at Jacksonville, Ill., and in 1887 he moved to Lincoln, Nebr. Bryan was a U.S. Representative from 1891 to 1895 but was defeated for the U.S. Senate in 1894. The next two years he spent as editor in chief of the Omaha World-Herald. Having ardently identified himself with the free silver forces in Congress, he became their most popular speaker in a preconvention drive to control the Democratic national convention at Chicago in 1896. Populist party also nominated him, but the conservative gold Democrats ran John M. Palmer. The chief issue of the campaign was Bryan's proposal for free and unlimited coinage of silver, which he thought would remedy the economic ills then plaguing farmers and industrial workers. He lost the bitterly fought contest to Republican William McKinley , whose campaign was skillfully managed by Marcus A. Hanna Bryan controlled the Democratic convention in 1900 and saved the silver plank from removal by Eastern gold factions, but he agreed to put the campaign emphasis on anti-imperialism. Defeated again by McKinley, Bryan in 1901 started the Commoner

    Background
William Jennings Bryan Dorn represented South Carolina's Third District in the United States Congress for thirteen terms between 1948 and 1974. Dorn was born near Greenwood, South Carolina in 1916 to T.E. and Pearl Griffith Dorn, both educators. One of ten children, he was educated in the Greenwood public schools. In 1938, at the age of twenty-two, Dorn was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. Two years later he won election to the South Carolina Senate. Dorn became the youngest state senator in South Carolina history when a special act was passed to allow him to be seated, as he would not meet the minimum requirement of twenty-five years of age until four months into the term. Dorn resigned from the Senate in 1942 to enlist in the Army Air Corps, served for eighteen months in Europe, and was discharged from military service in October, 1945. His six brothers also saw service during the war.

    Biography:
William Jennings Bryan (1860-1925) was a leading figure in the early days of American fundamentalism, but became best known for his defense of creationism and attack on evolution in the infamous Scopes Monkey Trial in Dayton, Tennessee. Early fundamentalism was not very involved, politically, but Bryan was. Bryan was a political progressive who fought for the rights and dignity of working people. He played an important role in the ratification of four constitutional amdendments which he saw as helping create a more democratic and more righteous society: the progressive federal income tax, Prohibition, women's sufferage, and the direct election of senators. Bryan received the Democratic nomination for President three times, never getting much support outside of rural and southern areas. In 1912 his support for Woodrow Wilson helped the latter get the presidency, and Bryan was made Secretary of State. His unwavering commitment to pacifism, however, brought him into conflict with the administration due to the developing war in Europe, and he eventually had to resign.

William Jennings Bryan was one of Nebraska's most influential politicians and a famous and powerful speaker. Born in Illinois, Bryan studied law in college and moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1887 to set up a law practice. In 1890 he was elected the first Democratic congressman from Nebraska. He was United States Secretary of State for President Woodrow Wilson from 1913 to 1915, and an editor of the Omaha World-Herald from 1894 to 1896. William Jennings Bryan was the candidate of the Democratic Party for president of the United States in 1896, 1900, and 1908, but he lost each time. Known as the "Great Commonor," Bryan showed his concern for the working man and woman by helping bring about several changes in the way our government works. Some of them are:
    • Bryan was the first candidate for president to go out and meet the people during an election campaign. This was called "whistle-stop campaigning."
    • Bryan wanted U.S. senators to be elected directly by the voters in each state instead of by state legislatures. The U.S. Constitution was amended in 1913 to let the people vote for senators.
