The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars by Steven Brust was published as fantasy. It is primarily, at least upon the surface, about a group of young artists who share a studio, about the current work in progress of the narrator, about the relations amongst the artists, and a story that the narrator is telling to the other members of the group. It is very good. I like Steven Brust for his excellent characterization and for his unpredictability. His books, at least the ones I've read, are all very different from one another, even those within his Vlad Taltos series.
Brokedown Palace by Steven Brust, his fourth published novel I believe, is an excellent fantasy. It is set in the world of his Vlad Taltos novels ( Taltos Jhereg Yendi , etc.), but in a different region of that world. Like his The Sun, the Moon and the Stars , it alternates between a realistic psychological style, focusing upon character and motivation, and an archaic fairy-tale style, focusing on events and dialogue. Most of the book deals with intrigue within the royal family of Fenario, a small nation with Faerie (the Dragaera of the Vlad Taltos books) on its west and barbarian hordes upon the north and south. The palace, the spiritual heart of the kingdom, is bit by bit falling to pieces (hence the title), and there is controversy, sometimes with deadly force, about what to do about it. I highly recommend this, especially to those who have enjoyed Brust's other fantasy, but also to those who may have avoided him because they are wary of open-ended series.

I've never met Steven Brust. I really want to. I really want to ask him what's so magical about the number seventeen. Why do all his novels have seventeen chapters? As a storyteller, Steven Brust is never less than tremendous fun. Considered as a serious writer he keeps taking my breath away. For Brust, and for the others who claim in a "seriously joking" way to be members of the Pre-Joycean Fellowship, there is no distinction between the two. Whether it's the deft charm of Cowboy Feng's Space Bar and Grill , the mock-Dumas hilarities of the Khaavren books ( The Phoenix Guards and Five Hundred Years After ) or the dazzling brilliance of his new epistolary novel Freedom and Necessity (with Emma Bull) Brust consistently manages to pull off something pre- eminently readable, technically amazing and never predictable. Brust began his career with Jhereg Yendi Teckla Taltos Phoenix Athyra and Orca ); the Khaavren romances mentioned above and the very strange Brokedown Palace . (Brust himself describes this as "your basic mixture of Hungarian folktale and Grateful Dead song lyrics.") It was the first Brust I read, and I like it a lot. In all these novels Brust tells stories that are never less than compelling and exciting in their own right. Behind that there is a background that is as complex and fascinating as any in fantasy. Behind that there is a level on which the books are about the nature of fantasy and of art itself. Tolkien wrote in "On Fairy Stories" that it isn't possible to write about Faerie from an insider's point of view, that one can only write about the stranger who goes there to visit. I think in one way all the Dragaeran books can be read as a commentary on that statement.

trust me Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? I like almost everything Brust's writtenI was never able to get through Gypsy , which he wrote with (I believe) Megan Lindholm , or To Reign in Hell . The remainder I have mostly liked quite a lot, and have read many of them aloud to Jane. Most of his books concern one Vlad Taltos, assassin, organized crime boss, and generally nice guy (no, really). Vlad is a member of House Jhereg, one of the 17 houses comprising the Dragaeran Empire. He is, however, not Dragaeran, but humanor "Easterner" as the Dragaerans would call him. Easterners living outside of the Dragaeran Empire think of the Dragaerans as elves, but you'd have to search quite a long way to find anything more different than Tolkien's elves. Dragaerans do, however, live for many hundred years, and tend to scorn Easterners as subhuman. Each of the Dragaeran houses has its own distinct character and physical characteristics; House Jhereg specializes in underhandedness, dirty dealing, and organized crime, and is not above selling titles of nobility. That's how Vlad got in; his father was a social climber. Despite Vlad's profession, the series is quite enjoyable, and often funny. The first book is

Steven Madman Brust is the author of The Phoenix Guards, Five HundredYears After, Taltos, Jhereg, and a whole bunch of others.
http://www.cloudnet.com/~jldomini/brust.html
Steven "Madman" Brust is the author of The Phoenix Guards Five Hundred Years After Taltos Jhereg , and a whole bunch of others. He is writing two consecutive series in parallel, set in the same world. (See middle name listed above.) The first series will have five front covers when he's done, while only actually being three books, which are based on the Dumas Musketeer books. (What did I just say about the middle name?) He's also written books not set on that world, which is a shame, but the ones I've read have been just as good as the ones that are, so no, you can't kill him for that. Brust, while being insane, is one of the most fascinating authors around. Excuse me. I've never met him so I can't say that. But he's writing some of the most fascinating books around, and doing things that should be impossible in the course of them. The second series on his world of Dragaera (if I can call it a second series when he's writing both series at the same time and I suspect the timelines will soon overlap as well) is mostly told by an assassin named Vlad Taltos. (That's pronounced "Taltosh," roughly.) The language is as modern and casual as the other series' is convoluted, contrived, and unnatural. The first series tells of the adventures of four friends, including recounting a horrible disaster on that world brought on by the hubris of one of that world's greatest men. Confused yet? The thing that makes these books so great is the way Brust wields clues like weapons, sometimes hitting you so fast and lightly that it takes several books before you notice and say "ow". The only way to survive is cranking up the paranoia until you're nearly paralysed. I have had heated debates with people over if there are any genuine mistakes in the books, or if they aren't all planned. So far, the evidence suggests that it is all planned. Including the mistakes.

From About the Author in Jhereg Five Hundred Years After has: Steven Brust is a Minneapolis writer of Hungarian ancestry and the father of several novels and four children, non necessarily in that order. In addition to writing, cooking, and starting arguments, Brust plays drums, banjo, and guitar in a variety of musical groups, including the legendary Cats Laughing. He lives in a large Victorian house and he drives a car that must be seen to be believed.
