Biography
English poet, the wife of Robert Browning, the most respected and successful woman poet of the Victorian period, considered seriously for the laureateship that eventually was awarded to Tennyson in 1850. Elizabeth Browning's greatest work, Sonnets from the Portuguese (1850), is a sequence of love sonnets addresses to her husband. Her vivid intelligence and ethereal physical appearance made a lifelong impression to all of the friends of the Brownings, among them Ruskin, Carlyle, Thackeray, Rossetti, Hawthorne, and many others. Elizabeth Browning was born in Coxhoe Hall, Durham. Her father was Edward Moulton Barrett, whose wealth was derived from Jamaican plantations. She grew up in the west of England and was largely educated at home by a tutor, quickly learning Latin and Greek and reed and write avidly. At the age of 14 she wrote her first collection of verse, The Battle of Marathon . It was followed by An Essay on Mind (1826), privately printed at her father's expense, and a translation of

EXCERPTED FROM A READER'S TREASURY Browning, Elizabeth Barrett : Sonnets from the Portuguese
Psychotherapy
Published by Crown Publishers/NY in c1979 When Robert Browning had these poems of his wife Elizabeth published in 1850, he is reported to have said: "I dared not keep to myself the finest Sonnets written in any language since Shakespeare's." That is ample praise for the fine work of the woman he called his "little Portuguese," which may have led to the title chosen for this collection of sonnets. What else can one say about this book of sonnets, except to offer brief glimpses of their artistry to tantalize and delight. If these words seem familiar, you will know why Robert thought they were so important - they have won their way into our collective psyche. Each sonnet is on a separate page, and I offer to you, dear Reader, a few lines from some of them: [page 18]
Go from me. Yet I feel that I shall stand
Henceforth in thy shadow. [page 30]
The face of the world has changed, I think,
Since first I heard the footsteps of thy soul [page 44]
If thou must love me, let it be for nought

Death of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, announced in the Guardian, July 5, 1861
Saturday February 15, 2003
The Guardian

The Turin correspondent of the Daily News announces the death of Mrs Browning at Florence, on Saturday last. This gifted woman was born in 1800, and it is stated that she "wrote largely at 10 years of age, and well at 15". Her first important essay in authorship was a translation of Prometheus published anonymously in 1833; and five years later appeared "The Seraphim", with some miscellaneous poems. In Men of the Time, we read: "The publication in 1850 of her collected poems, in two volumes, gave a great impetus to her reputation, and obtained very general acknowledgment of her title to rank, in many points of view, as the first female poet of the age. A small number of unpublished poems appeared in this edition, among them 'Lady Geraldine's Courtship', which has been cited as one of her happiest inspirations, and was written in 12 hours. In 1851 appeared 'Casa Guidi, Windows', a poem the theme of which was the repeated struggle for liberty which she had opportunities of witnessing from the windows of the Casa Guidi, her own Florentine residence."

Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Spiritual Progress
Face to Face with God
Linda M. Lewis
"Lewis's work is a useful contribution to Browning studies; it focuses on an important but neglected aspect of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's workher reevaluations of Christianityand treats that topic systematically and thoroughly. Lewis's analysis of the religious poetry is often excellent, providing readers with new perspectives on its operations and significance."Antony H. Harrison Elizabeth Barrett Browning believed that "Christ's religion is essentially poetrypoetry glorified." In Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Spiritual Progress, Linda M. Lewis studies Browning's religion as poetry, her poetry as religion. The book interprets Browning's literary life as an arduous spiritual quest the successive stages being a rejection of Promethean pride for Christ-like humility, affirmation of the gospels of suffering and of work, internalization of the doctrine of Apocalypse, and ascent to divine love and truth. Lewis follows this religious crusade from the poet's childhood to her posthumous Last Poems including such topics as her Bible reading, her introduction to the Greek church fathers and the English Protestant reformers, the theological debates in which she participated, her quarrel with the theology of

Known for her Sonnets from the Portuguese (1850), her poetry captured the essence of her love for poet Robert Browning. The 43rd sonnet began with the famous words , "How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." The book's title came from Robert's pet name for Elizabeth, "the Portuguese." "Experience, like a pale musician," she wrote, "holds a dulcimer of patience in his hand." With patience and love, Elizabeth and Robert believed and created the "impossible." Through the beauty of her poetry, Robert fell in love with her before they ever met. He wrote to her of his admiration and she replied. The couple exchanged nearly 600 letters and poetry for 20 months. Of their love, she wrote, "He made me feel with every breath I drew in his presence, that he loved me with no ordinary affection." Elizabeth, an invalid and recluse with a chronic lung disease, chose love over death . She defied her father's orders, and the couple eloped to

Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning
MARTIN GARRETT, Author of Mary Shelley: A Chronology

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways." Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning captures the remarkable love story of the renowned poets behind these famous words, from their dramatic elopement in 1846 to Elizabeth's tragic death in 1861. Their romance began with a letter from Robert admiring Elizabeth's highly acclaimed book, Poems . When her father disapproved, they married in secret and boldly moved to Florence, Italy. Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Robert Browning describes how their love and lives flourished there, producing one son, writing some of their most renowned works, and maintaining friendships with some of the most prominent literati of their time, including John Ruskin, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, and William Makepeace Thackeray.
