"Brautigan is good for you. No writer you can think of is quite like him today, nor was any writer anytime - unless you can imagine the kind of things Mark Twain might have written had he wandered into a field of ripe cannabis with a pack of Zig Zag papers in his pocket. That's about as close as I can come to Brautigan, a kind of cracker-barrel surrealist whose humor is essentially Nineteenth-Century Western American." - Bruce Cook

Other books. What we want.. What you think. No one who works at the Kumquat Castle ever met Richard Brautigan or ever even saw Richard Brautigan in real life. We never even ever talked to Richard Brautigan on the phone. But we have read most of Richard Brautigan's books, at least the ones that can still be found outside the expensive private collections. And we've looked at lots of pictures of Richard Brautigan, especially the ones on his book covers...but no one we know seems to really know exactly who or what Richard Brautian really was. We've even read a Brautigan biography written by a friend of his, and talked to the guy who wrote it, but we still don't know much about Brautigan himself. Maybe it's best this way, because as long as there are still things to find out about Richard Brautigan, the editor of Kumquat Meringue and his few friends and associates still have something to think about. And to wonder about. We think that reading Kumquat Meringue helps a little to know more about this sometimes mysterious writer, because the pages of Kumquat bring many poems written "to" and "for" Richard Brautigan. It's been many years now since his untimely death, but many still remember the writer of all those weird, little books...and still care enough about him to write to tell us how they feel.

The infamous "Face" appearing throughout Kumquat publications is drawn by John Clark, Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Kumquat Castle
Located on a weedy bluff overlooking the tree-shaded Zumbro Lake somewhere in a not-very-exciting part of Minnesota, the Kumquat Castle is the last known outpost for the cult of Richard Brautigan.
Here, shaded by ancient oaks, the somewhat less-than-clear and muddy-bottomed Zumbro Lake laps against the mossy walls of the castle, while in the upper rooms of the crumbling estate can be found one of the largest and most complete repositories of Richard Brautigan writings this side of Montana.
It's also here that the Kishwaukee Kumquat Society and Penumbra Press publish the little-known literary journal, Kumquat Meringue . Though it's true that Richard Brautigan has gone to the big trout stream in the sky, a cult has grown around his memory and his writings...thus the ascendance of Kumquat Meringue as a convergence of Brautigan thought and a focus point for those who would hope to keep the memory of Richard Brautigan alive. Some day the castle will topple, and its time-worn ramparts will join the smooth stones at the bottom of the lake, but until that time, the lone inhabitant of the castle has vowed to spend his days floating messages in bottles (in search of other Brautigan fanatics) and his long nights reading poetry and dreaming of the piney woods, watermelon sugar and all the girls from the covers of old Richard Brautigan books.

Richard Brautigan (1935-1984) was born in Tacoma, Washington. His father was a laborer, his mother a housewife. Although he never went to college, Brautigan was poet-in-residence at the California Institute of Technology in 1967, the year before he received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. He had begun to write poems as a teenager and later told an interviewer that he wrote poetry for seven years in an attempt to learn how to write a sentence.

Trout Fishing in America
Richard Brautigan
RICHARD BRAUTIGAN WAS another member of the Beat scene of San Francisco in the fifties and is often considered a bridge between the decades. He became, with the publication of Trout Fishing in America, one of the most popular of the counterculture writers of the sixties. He is often thought of as a modern Thoreau; his love of nature and his concern for the environment are recurring themes in his works‚in one sequence he writes of sections of a trout stream being sold in a junkyard for $6.50 per foot. Written in 1961, Trout Fishing in America was finally published by the small Four Seasons Foundation in 1967, and was so popular that many of the communes that sprang up around the country were named after the novel. Thousands of copies of Trout Fishing in America were ordered for sporting goods stores in the mistaken belief that the book was about the subtle art of angling. Richard Brautigan died in 1984, an apparent suicide.

Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me
Richard Farina
THOUGH RICHARD FARINA died young and his literary output was minimal, he was a larger-than-life figure whose writings and exploits entrenched him in the mythology of the sixties. Farina was of Irish and Cuban heritage; in the fifties he fought both with the Irish Republican Army in Ireland and Fidel Castro in the mountains of Cuba. He attended Cornell University, where Thomas Pynchon was his friend and roommate. Pynchon writes of the novel, "It's been a while since I've read anything quite so groovy, quite such a joy from beginning to end." Richard Farina died at the age of thirty in a motorcycle accident on his way to a publication party for this book.

Richard Brautigan
