In the 1930s Bowles left the U.S. and studied in Europe under American composer Aaron Copland. He showed his poetry to Gertrude Stein in Paris and traveled with Aaron Copland through Germany and Morocco. Throughout the late 1930s and early 1940s Bowles developed a brilliant career as a composer for ballet, theater and films. Between 1943 and 1947 he wrote scores for twelve plays. Occasionally he composed more ambitious works, suchs as the Concerto for Two pianos (1946-7) and the Opera The Wind Remains . The fact that he is not forgotten as a composer proves the recent recordings of his chamber music. In 1938 Bowles married Jane Auer, a playwright and novelist, and in 1947 the couple traveled to North Africa, eventually settling in Tangier. In Morocco he started writing again and in 1949 Bowles published his first novel, The Sheltering Sky . This book became a best-seller and was made into a film in 1991. The Sheltering Sky was followed by the novels Let It Come Down (1952) and The Spider's House (1955). In these works, Bowles placed Americans in the North African landscape to dramatize the increasing alienation of his characters. The most of his novels were written in the fifties and sixties. Possibly the most important of Bowles' musical cotributions in the late 1950s is his ethnographic research into and recording of Morrocan music. LET IT COME DOWN
THE LIFE OF PAUL BOWLES a film by Jennifer Baichwal introduction about paul bowles the cast of characters music in the film ... home video
Against a backdrop of the exotic landscape of North Africa, the enigma of iconoclastic writer Paul Bowles (author of The Sheltering Sky ) begins to unravel. Interviews with the reclusive Bowles, who speaks with unprecedented candor about his work and his controversial private life, are intercut with the conflicting views of his detractors and supporters. Highlights of the film include exclusive footage of the last meeting of Bowles, William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg in New York; footage of Bowles translating Moroccan storyteller Mohammed Mrabet; the first and only film appearance of his wife Jane Bowles' lover, Cherifa, who is rumored to have poisoned Jane to death; detailed treatment of Bowles' work as a composer; and readings of Bowles' magnificent and poetic work. The scrapbook format lends a publication a whimsical flavor and its creator the opportunity to experiment with material other than words to legitimize impressions or to dress up information. Executed well, the technique is referred to as collage. From the appearance of this book, one could characterize Nutting as an exceptional collage artist. It’s utterly enjoyable to page through this book, delighting at the interplay between Nutting’s impressionistic photographs and the various written messages—the letters, captions, first-person narrative, passages from Bowles’ journals. The experience can be likened to viewing an old scrapbook that reeks with the scent of a flower or two pressed between its pages. On the contrary, Nutting’s intriguing collages display an obsession with a country (Morocco), a book ( The Sheltering Sky ), and a man (Paul Bowles) that fueled a great friendship and a long-lasting adventure. She met him in 1986 and they were friends (although at times Nutting seems to imagine they were lovers, and on more than one occasion records her jealousy of Jane Bowles) until his death in 1999. The portrait of Bowles she offers is that of a sensual, vital, and mysterious man, interesting to the very end. —
