His Life: A Poem
George Bowering Shortlisted for the 2000 Governor General's Award for Poetry Personal, confidential, compelling . . . His Life: A Poem by George Bowering. Powerful, exquisite, and intricately crafted, His Life: A Poem , George Bowering's stunning new poetic memoir spans and reconfigures thirty years of this award-winning writer's life. A thoroughly unique project, vintage Bowering, His Life began to take shape in the early eighties. Bowering explains that at that time a young Sicilian in Toronto presented him with a fine Italian writing book with lines and rounded quarters. He put the gift away, saving it until it was needed for a poem. The time came a few years later. In the late eighties Bowering began rifling his diaries for what he had recorded on the equinoxes and solstices between the years 1958 and 1988. Whatever he'd recorded on those days became the building blocks for the poems in this collection. Ultimately, His Life took shape organically, not chronologically. From the gathered raw material Bowering may have written, for example, Fall 1979 before Spring 1962. This means the project stands naked, honest, and unprotected; in his words, "the vapidity of a date's entry," as much as its fascinating detail, could alter a poem's course. Tough luck. Ten years after beginning the project, more than forty years after first recording information about the people, places, and events upon which the poems are based

an impossible thing no music sounds as many changes with such common theme. A drawing of an Indian weed is some surety, an illustration of a leaf with only a thousand lines in it. INTERVIEW of George Bowering by Donato Mancini
GB: I do not think that there is A definitive book, but I do think that there is a book or two by whose shape I would like to be judged or appreciated or remembered. The main ones might be Kerrisdale Elegies and Allophanes . They, like other texts I have worked on, are conceived as books, worked on over a period of time commensurate to the task. They both take up a problem or a baffle or a procedure and attend to it, so that the moment by moment line-making can be paid attention to, the gizmo having been decided. Obviously Kerrisdale Elegies has to keep up the pretense of translating the Duino Elegies , and Allophanes could be written only during a series of poetry classes given by Robin Blaser. I do occasionally write a lyric, but nearly all the poems I am still interested in are sequences and books.
GB: Well, what I said was that prose, fiction, say, is spatial, as
are sculpture and painting, while poetry is rather temporal, as is music. Now i suppose that once a long poem such as

Imagining the Interior with George Bowering In this paper I will discuss George Bowering’s metafictional representations of British Columbia with special attention to " Clarice" and " Shoot ". In these two novels, Bowering has extended his historiographic approach to B.C.s fictional landscapes, begun in " Burning Water ," to the BC interior. He creates larger-than-life characters (who are drawn from ‘life’) to re-tell episodes from B.C.;s historio-cultural past. These two novels, however, are much less well-known than Bowering’s other work, in particular " Burning Water" The Double Hook " or with more popular forms like Harold Reinisch’s recent autobiographical essay/fictions in " Thom Thomson’s Shack ." Bowering becomes Canada’s first poet laureate
    November 13, 2002
Canada has chosen for its first official poet laureate an outspoken, irreverent critic of the high and mighty. George Bowering, a poet and writer with more than 50 books to his name, has been chosen as the first "parliamentary poet laureate" of Canada by the Speakers of the Senate and the House of Commons. "Here is a poet with a clever hand at parody, who knows his history, having written a quirky book on the personal lives of the country’s prime ministers and ‘swashbuckling’ tales of his province’s roots," the Toronto Globe and Mail writes. Bowering won the Governor-General’s award for poetry in 1969 and in 1980 for fiction.
