Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback James Boswell (1740-1795) Scottish lawyer, essayist, known for his two-volume biography THE LIFE OF SAMUEL JOHNSON, LL.D (1791), published seven years after the death of its subject. Boswell met Samuel Johnson in May 1763 in Davies's London bookshop and the two became fast friends. He recorded in detail Johnson's words and activities in a relatively short period. Later the historian Thomas Macaulay (1800-1859) called Boswell's worship of Dr. Johnson " Lues Boswelliana , or disease of admiration." "We cannot tell the precise moment when a friendship is formed. As in filling a vessel drop by drop, there is at last a drop which makes it run over; so in a series of kindness there is at last one which makes the heart run over." (from Life of Johnson James Boswell was born in Edinburgh the son of Alexander Boswell, Lord Auchinleck, who was a judge in the supreme courts of Scotland. Boswell's mother, Euphemia Erskine, was descended from a minor branch of Scottish royalty. His family had had for two-and-a-half centuries as its seat the estate of Auchinleck in Ayrshire. Near the new mansion were the ruins of the Old Castle, which he eagerly showed to Johnson and other friends. Much of his life Boswell was plagued by his mother's suffocating Calvinism and his father's coldness. In one of his journals Boswell wrote: "I do not recollect having had any other valuable principle impressed upon me by my father except a strict regard for truth, which he impressed upon my mind by a hearty beating at an early age when I lied, and then talking of the

James Boswell is one of the few Scots of his time known to most Englishmen, largely because of his friendship with Doctor Samuel Johnson, for whom he is the primary biographer. Boswell had the ability to recount his experiences in a way that put across his feelings and what he saw and experienced. His 'London Diaries' are on a par with those of the diarist Samuel Pepys, and of equal (though overlooked) bracing humour. By his own account, James Boswell also came to Moffat during 1768, taking the Moffat waters for his health and reporting the strange appearance of a Presbyterian who enjoined him and like bathers to pray for their sins. The reasoning behind the minister's words may lie in the fact that Moffat Well's waters were particularly beneficial to those (like James) who had eaten and drunk far too much for their own good. James was also a notorious womaniser whose Diaries were only published as late as 1957, his family having previously managed to prevent this. The papers are now at Yale University in the United States. [Moffat Town Index] [Top]

James Boswell
James Boswell
Biographer and traveller. Born in Edinburgh, the son of the prominent advocate Lord Auchinleck, Boswell was educated at the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Utrecht. Although a lawyer by profession, Boswell travelled widely in Europe and is noted for his accounts of these journeys written in his distinctive style. Perhaps his best known work described his travels with Dr. Samuel Johnson to the Scottish Highlands and Islands. On the death of his father in 1782, Boswell inherited the family estates at Auchinleck, East Ayrshire and he moved there to become a capable and well-liked Laird. He spent much of his time there writing the biography of his friend and mentor Johnson, which was published in 1791.

James Boswell
WRITER Best remembered today as friend and biographer of Dr Samuel Johnson, Boswell was an extraordinary figure of eighteenth-century society. Vain yet good-natured, foolish yet charming, he was also conceited and a hypochondriac with a drinking problem. He forced himself upon eminent people, and bragged about the great men he knew.
David Hume thought him a bit crazy. Yet for years Boswell moved in the same circles as Sheridan, Goldsmith, Rousseau, Voltaire and Walpole. He was an inveterate notetaker.
Boswell, born in Edinburgh, was the son of Alexander Boswell, an advocate who some years later was elevated to the bench of the Court of Session and took the judicial title of Lord Auchinleck, after the family estate in Ayrshire. At the University young James studied law but his heart was never in it - to his father's irritation he preferred high life in London and travel in Europe.
In London, Boswell ("Bozzy" to all his friends) shamelessly badgered his contacts for an introduction to Dr Johnson. When they eventually met in 1763, the two men rapidly became friends. From the very first, the young Scot made notes of the great man's conversation, Johnson encouraging him to do so.
Boswell married in 1769. His wife was a sensible woman and extraordinarily patient with her gadabout husband. She did not share his enthusiasm for Johnson.

Hi - I'm Chris Whiley. My main interests have always included 18th century English literature and, in particular, Samuel Johnson and James Boswell. I'm a member of the Johnson Society(Lichfield) . Check out as well the Johnson Society of London.
I've decided to start off by offering a range of links, plus commentary, to sites related to James Boswell, as, on the Net at least, he's the neglected one in the duo. I'll also be putting up a shortish, but fairly comprehensive biography and bibliography . If you find this useful, let me know what else you'd like to see. Just click the picture after you've read the brief summary if you want to visit the site.
  • Links to some bibliographies and citations pulled together as part of the Malaspina Great Books project. But beware, they don't all work and other James Boswells are included Back to top
  • The James Boswell Institute, part of Utrecht University, where JB studied law in the Winter of 1763/64. The background is a nice picture of him (which I am using as my background as well, so a big thank you to them), but so far as I can tell none of the courses are remotely connected with him or his times Back to top
  • An extract from Boswell's journal dealing with his visit to Ferney to meet Voltaire (Boswell on the Grand Tour: Germany and Switzerland 1764, entry for Monday 24 December). Links to some nice contemporary prints of Voltaire
