41. Erma Bombeck - Gotta Love Her!!!

1927 - 1996 Her words will live on Erma Bombeck was one of the funniest and most sarcastic writers of our time. I always enjoyed reading her columns in the newspaper so much. I think I bought every book she ever wrote (12, I believe) and my personal favorite is "The Grass is always Greener over the Septic Tank" followed closely by "If Life's a Bowl of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits?" Recently there have been some cute and clever emails going around about a conversation between Erma and Martha Stewart. I have to say that I identify much more closely to Erma, than to Martha. Sometimes people think my kids are kinda "smart mouths". I have to say that that probably comes from being raised by a rather sarcastic mother. Sarcasm is one of my favorite forms of humor, and if I get sarcastic with you while smiling - you can be sure it means I like you and am teasing you. My sarcasm is reserved only to those people that I like. Silence is what I offer those I DON'T like. :) I have been collecting little bits of Erma's more quotable quotes over time from newspapers, T-shirts, calenders, you name it. So, I probably really don't have permission to use this material, but I will use it until someone tells me they OWN the copywrite to it.

42. To Erma Bombeck On Mothers' Day
Midlife Moments columnist Mike Bellah pays tribute to bombeck.
http://www.bestyears.com/ermabombeck.html
with Mike Bellah She was the funniest mother in America and, quite possibly, the most insightful. For over 30 years Erma Bombeck made us laugh; she also made us think. "I never ironed my husband’s pajamas. And if I raised my hand to wipe the hair out of my children’s eyes, they’d flinch and call their attorney."
Erma Bombeck " I love my mother for all the times she said absolutely nothing."
-Erma Bombeck To Erma Bombeck on Mothers’ Day She was the funniest mother in America and, quite possibly, the most insightful. For over 30 years Erma Bombeck made us laugh; she also made us think. On this Mothers’ Day, I want to pay tribute to my favorite columnist who died two years ago last month at a much-too-young 69. And what better way to honor Bombeck than to share her own words on her own favorite subject, motherhood. What kind of mother would . . . ? Bombeck liked to poke fun at those who overly idealized mothers, people (usually mothers-to-be or first-time mothers blessed with a compliant child) whose unrealistic and perfectionistic notions encouraged them to condemn those who did not measure up. Quoting the words of one such pharisee, Bombeck wrote, "Did you see the story in the paper about the woman who forgot one of her children in a laundromat restroom? She dares call herself a mother! How disgusting! What kind of mother would . . .?"

43. Quotes From Erma Bombeck
Comments on marriage, coffee, housework, mothers, advice, the empty nest, graduation, baseball, and travel.
http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/9599/quotes.html
Quotes from Erma Bombeck Spend at least one Mother's Day with your respective mothers before you decide on marriage. If a man gives his mother a gift certificate for a flu shot, dump him. My kids always perceived the bathroom as a place where you wait it out until all the groceries are unloaded from the car. Making coffee has become the great compromise of the decade. It's the only thing "real" men do that doesn't seem to threaten their masculinity. To women, it's on the same domestic entry level as putting the spring back into the toilet-tissue holder or taking a chicken out of the freezer to thaw. I don't know why no one ever thought to paste a label on the toilet-tissue spindle giving 1-2-3 directions for replacing the tissue on it. Then everyone in the house would know what Mama knows. Giving birth is little more than a set of muscular contractions granting passage of a child. Then the mother is born. Housework is a treadmill from futility to oblivion with stop offs at tedium and counter productivity. There's a territorial ritual to an aerobics class. I entered a class for the first time a few years ago and ended up where no one wanted to be...in the front row next to the mirror. It was three years before I could work my way to the back row.

46. Erma Bombeck's Mother's Day Column
Tribute to her own mother, from the late columnist.
http://www.skl.com/~guidezon/jaerma.htm
Erma Bombeck's Mother's Day Column
Brought to you via Neil Savage's "Appreciating Girl Scout/Guide Volunteers" Compilation Dear Mother, When the Good Lord was creating mothers He was into His 6th day of "overtime" when the angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one." And the Lord said, "Have you read the specification on this order?" "She has to be completely washable but not plastic" "Have 180 movable parts . . . all replaceable" "Run on black coffee and leftovers" "Have a lap the disappears when she stands up" "A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair" "And 6 pairs of hands" The angel shook her head slowly and said, "6 pairs of hands....no way." "It's not the hands that are causing me the problems," said the Lord, "It's the three pairs of eyes that Mothers have to have." "That's in the standard model?" asked the angel. The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks 'What are you kids doing in there?' when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn't but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front so that she can look at a child when he goofs and say, 'I understand and I love you' without so much as uttering a word."

47. Erma Bombeck - Another Christmas Season Bites The Dust
One of 195 columns included in Forever, erma , a published collection of bombeck's most popular works.
http://lubbockonline.com/news/122996/erma.htm
Erma Bombeck - Another Christmas season bites the dust (Editor's Note: The following column is one of 195 included in ''Forever, Erma'' (Andrews and McMeel), a recently published collection of the best-loved writing from America's favorite humorist, Erma Bombeck. This column originally appeared Jan. 1, 1987.) You say you've had enough people around to last you a lifetime? You say if you don't get some time to yourself you may start braiding your hair and humming? You'd like to clear everyone out of the house and be able to have some quiet time alone? Read my lips and slowly repeat after me: ''I am going to take the Christmas tree down.'' You will only have to say it once and feet will scurry, doors will slam, car motors will turn over. In 30 seconds you'll feel like the last person on Earth. No one loves a Christmas tree on Jan. 1. The wonderful soft branches that the family couldn't wait to get inside to smell have turned into rapiers that jab you. The wonderful blinking lights that Daddy arranged by branch and color have knotted themselves hopelessly around crumbling brownery and have to be severed with a bread knife. The stockings that hung by the chimney with care are hanging out of sofa cushions, and they smell like clam dip. And the angel that everyone fought to put on top of the tree can only be removed with an extension ladder that is in the garage, and no one can remember how to fit it through the door.

54. A Momma Giggle: Letter From Martha Stewart
erma bombeck responds to the domestic diva (be sure to read her reponse).
http://www.anonymomma.com/martha.htm
~ A Letter from Martha Stewart ~
Dear Friends,
This perfectly delightful note is being sent on paper I made myself to tell you what I have been up to. Since it snowed last night, I got up early and made a sled with old barn wood and a glue gun. I hand-painted it in gold leaf, got out my loom, and made a blanket in peaches and mauves. Then to make the sled complete, I made a white horse to pull it from DNA that I just had sitting around in my craft room.
By then, it was time to start making the place mats and napkins for my 20 breakfast guests. I'm serving the old standard Stewart twelve-course breakfast, but I'll let you in on a little secret: I didn't have time to make the table and chairs this morning, so I used the ones I had on hand. Before I moved the table into the dining room, I decided to add just a touch of the holidays. So, I repainted the room in pinks and stenciled gold stars on the ceiling. Then, while the homemade bread was rising, I took antique candle molds and made the dishes (exactly the same shade of pink) to use for breakfast. These were made from Hungarian clay, which you can get in almost any Hungarian craft store.
Well, I must run. I need to finish the buttonholes on the dress I'm wearing for breakfast. I'll get out the sled and drive this note to the post office as soon as the glue dries on the envelope I'll be making. Hope my breakfast guests don't stay too long I have 40,000 cranberries to string with bay leaves before my speaking engagement at noon.

Humor columnist Erma Bombeck dies
April 22, 1996
Web posted at: 12:15 p.m. EDT SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) Erma Bombeck, the housewife-turned-columnist who made fun of life in the suburbs, died Monday. She was 69. She died at a hospital in San Francisco, where she had undergone a kidney transplant earlier this month, said Alan McDermott, senior editor at Universal Press Syndicate. "Her family is shocked and saddened," a spokeswoman in her agent's office said. Bombeck's books include "The Grass Is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank," "I Lost Everything in the Postnatal Depression," and "When You Look Like Your Passport Photo, It's Time to Go Home." Bombeck was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy in 1992. Shortly afterward, her kidneys began failing and she underwent dialysis four times a day at her home in Paradise Valley, Arizona. The writer was on waiting lists to receive a kidney transplant until early this month, when a suitable donor match was found. She underwent the operation at the Medical Center of the University of California-San Francisco. The hospital said only that she died "from medical complications following a kidney transplant."
